As a Patient Financial Services Representative, you will be providing exceptional customer service while registering patients, verifying insurance, obtaining authorizations, and collect copays/coinsurance.
Location: 2626 E River Rd, Tucson, AZ
Schedule: M-F 8am-5pm
POSITION SUMMARY
This position is responsible for providing personalized coordination, clarification and communication of all financial aspects of care continuum, including insurance and authorization verification, registration, financial counseling and claims research. This position partners with the clinical care team to determine financial impact for the patient and serves as the primary contact for any financial questions related to a patient’s care across the entire continuum of their treatment, ensuring a seamless experience for the patient and their family.
CORE FUNCTIONS
1. Performs pre-registration/registration processes. Partners with the clinical care team to determine initial authorizations needed based on the predicted care treatment plan. Obtains patient insurance benefit information for all aspects of the treatment, including, but not limited to, inpatient and outpatient services, prescription drugs, and travel and housing, if necessary. Assesses need for alternative coverage sources.
2. Verifies insurance coverage and obtains authorizations and notifications throughout the patient’s treatment. Obtains all necessary signatures and documentation required by the patient’s insurance plan. Accurately and completely documents all information into the patient records system to ensure maximum reimbursement. Monitors and updates information regarding insurance data, authorizations, preferred providers and changes in patient’s treatment plan. Partners with the clinical care team and insurance provider to ensure continued coverage of patient’s care and maximum reimbursement and minimized financial impact to the patient.
3. Provides financial counseling to patients and their families and serves as the primary resource throughout the patient’s treatment. Discusses benefits and other financial issues with patients and/or family members during initial referral and during continuation of care. Advises patients on insurance and billing issues and options. Explains company financial policies and provides information as to available resources and avenues for alternative payment arrangements. Assists patients, families and team members in addressing insurance coverage gaps via alternative funding options.
4. Provides financial advocacy, assistance and support to patients and families, as needed. Assists patients who are un-insured to access other funding resources and completes required documents. Maintains current working knowledge of Medicare, Medicaid and other program benefits and criteria, particularly as they pertain to long-term care and low-income patients. May serve as a liaison between the facility and community in making community resources available to the patient and family.
5. Acts as a liaison between patient/PFS department/payer to enhance account receivables performance, resolve outstanding issues and/or patient concerns, and to maximize service excellence.
6. Calculates patient liability according to verification of insurance benefits, collects deposits and co-payments.
7. May provide leadership and training to other members of the financial team and serves as a resource for internal and external customers.
8. Works independently under general supervision, leads and follows structured work routines. Works in a fast paced, multitask environment with high volume and immediacy needs requiring independent decision making and sound judgment to prioritize work and ensure appropriateness and timeliness of each patient’s care. This position requires the ability to retain large amounts of changing payor information/knowledge crucial to attaining reimbursement for the services provided. This position is an integral part of the care team, as they serve as the primary contact for all financial aspects of the patient’s care, both for internal and external customers. Internal customers include all levels of the clinical care team, as well as other administrative support positions throughout the facility and organization. External customers include patients and their families, physician office staff and third-party payors.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Requires knowledge as typically obtained through an associate’s degree, with a focus in social work, healthcare administration or finance.
Requires knowledge of medical terminology and an understanding of all common insurance and payor types, authorization requirements and alternative financial resources as typically obtained through a minimum of three years of diversified experience in a hospital Patient Registration/Financial Services setting. Must have highly developed interpersonal, communications and human relations skills. Must also possess accurate and efficient keyboarding skills, strong organizational and time management skills and flexibility in responding to multiple demands. Employees working at Banner MD Anderson on the Banner University Medical Center Phoenix campus must possess a State of Arizona Department of Public Safety Level One Fingerprint Clearance Card at the time of hire and maintain the card for the duration of their employment. This is a requirement of the Whole Family Counseling Program held at this specific facility.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelors degree in social work, healthcare administration or finance preferred. Prior experience as a social worker or financial counselor preferred.
Additional related education and/or experience preferred.

The Acute Patient Access Services Representative will support the ER as well as other patient access areas as needed. You will obtain and verify patient demographic and insurance information, verifying eligibility, generating patient estimates based on benefits & services provided, entering data into ms4 and obtaining signatures on consent forms. This includes collecting money due and you must be comfortable having these conversations. This position is goal oriented and metrics measured include Accuracy, Productivity (# of patients registered in an hour) and point of service collections. A strong sense of urgency, ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks at once, along with excellent follow through skills are required. Must have at least 2 yrs of Customer Service experience. Experience in Healthcare a plus!
This is primarily for our Verrado ER site, however you are able to pick up shifts at our Banner Estrella location as well if you want.
Day and Weekend shifts are needed and we offer flexible scheduling. Shifts would fall between 6:00am to 12:00am Sun - Sat. Must be available for On Call shifts during weekends and holidays as well. Open availability preferred.
Plus you will enjoy an extra 10% per hour for BSS staff, plus an additional flat rate $1.00/hour weekend shift differential and an 18% per hour-night shift differential when applicable.
**All Acute Patient Access Services New Hires are required to attend New Hire Orientation & PAS New Hire and Systems Training and must be able to complete a 4-6 week paid training (days and hours will vary) and is generally full time. System training is in Mesa for one week (general business hours)

POSITION SUMMARY
This position is the first point of contact at healthcare facilities and assists patients with the administrative aspect of gaining access to medical treatment. This position is in a hospital-based setting which includes Emergency Dept, Inpatient, Obstetrics, Outpatient, etc. Responsible for in person patient intake and registration, providing superior customer service, accurately identifying, and obtaining authorizations patients’ insurance, verifying eligibility and benefits, generating patient estimates for services rendered, financial counseling, and collecting patient liability. Demonstrates the ability to resolve customer issues and provides excellent customer service.
CORE FUNCTIONS
1. Verifies patient’s demographics and accurately inputs this information into EHR, including documenting the account thoroughly to maximize reimbursement and minimize denials/penalties from the payor(s).
2. Proficiency with multiple services including, but not limited to inpatient, observation, emergency, obstetrics, surgery, imaging. This position may cover services 24/7.
3. Demonstrates a thorough understanding of insurance guidelines for all services. Proficiently verifies, reads, and understands insurance benefits.
4. Demonstrates proficient understanding that this position creates the first impression for our patient's experience with Banner Health. Demonstrates a positive patient experience through interactions and effective communication.
5. Proficient understanding of payer authorization guidelines. Accurately submits timely notification according to insurance guidelines using various systems to reduce/eliminate denials. Consistently meets all registration related key performance indicators as determined by management.
6. Obtains federal/state compliance information, consents and documentation required by the patient’s insurance plan(s). This includes a thorough understanding of accurately completing hospital-based compliance forms required by CMS. Uses multiple computer applications proficiently.
7. Consistently discusses financial liability with the patient(s) and/or families that includes: collection in full of patient liability, assisting patient in applying for Banner Line of Credit, setting up payment plans and/or assisting patient with Banner Financial Assistance policy/application.
8. Provides a variety of patient services and financial services tasks. May be assigned functions such as transporting patients, training new hire employees, recapping daily deposits, posting daily deposits, or conducting other work assignments of the Patient Access Services team.
9. Works independently under regular supervision and follows structured work routines. Works in a high-volume, fast paced, clinical environment which requires to ability to be adaptable, critical thinking, and independent decision making and to prioritize work and ensure appropriateness and timeliness of each patient’s care. Primary external customers include patients and their families, physician office staff and third-party payors.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma/GED is required.
Must have customer service skills or knowledge of patient financial services, financial, collecting services or insurance industry experience processes normally acquired over one or more years of work experience.
Requires the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously with minimal supervision and to work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment. Requires strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills to effectively interact with a wide range of audiences. Strong knowledge in the use of common office software, word processing, spreadsheet, database software, and typing ability are required.
Employees working at Banner Behavioral Health Hospital or the Whole Health Clinic must possess an Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card at the time of hire and maintain the card for the duration of their employment. Reviews Insulin reports/tickets for patients on diabetic medications that require medication reminders prior to meal delivery as appropriate; contacts nursing accordingly.
- Performs quality or PI projects, as directed, which may include test trays. Ensures correct selection of meals is served to reduce waste and redundancy. Collects soiled trays from patient rooms, returns to food carts and records calorie count information on the tray tickets.

- Serves as the primary person for performing all procedures related to sleep studies including diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, Multiple Sleep Latency Testing (MSLT), Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT), Parasomnia studies, Pulmonary Artery Pressure (PAP) and oxygen titration, etc. Ensures collection of appropriate data and in accordance with established protocols and policies and procedures.
- Performs difficult and unusual procedures and therapeutic interventions; analyzing complex situations, taking appropriate actions.
- Educates patients in sleep study procedures, responding to questions and ensuring all paperwork and consent forms are completed. Consistently evaluates the patient’s comprehension and adapts teaching methods accordingly.
- Coordinates various activities within the polysomnography department and assumes other duties, in the absence of a team lead or as assigned. Serves as a resource for department-related needs such as: specialty equipment or software implementation. QUALITY/SAFETY ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Performs polysomnographic data acquisition while monitoring study-tracing quality to ensure signals are artifact-free. Establishes and documents baseline values, observations, sleep stages, clinical events, position changes and other significant events. Verifies integrity of collected data and completes the data collection process, e.g., repeats the physiological and instrument calibrations and instructs the patient on completing questionnaires, etc.
- Troubleshoots, calibrates and performs preventive maintenance and quality control on all equipment per department guidelines, documenting activities. Evaluates sleep study related equipment, reporting and documenting malfunctions. Consults with leadership regarding technical issues.
- Scores sleep studies including Home Sleep Studies according to guidelines established by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and department policies and procedures. Prepares the preliminary detailed polysomnographic report for physician interpretation and completes the process for the final report once physician sign-off accomplished.
- Utilizes clinical judgement, using an analytical approach. Assists with implementation and teaching of department-based safety initiatives and standards of practice. Reports “near misses” and inputs errors promptly into Patient Safety Net to improve processes. Identifies trends and opportunities for corrective action and process improvement, providing recommendations. Contributes to meeting department and hospital targets for quality and safety.

- Maintain observation notes, conduct formal assessments, and provide other portfolio documentation to assess children’s progress in achieving developmental milestones and behaviors. Information on each child’s development will be shared with parents regularly, with two formal parent conferences annually.

Physical Requirements
- Ongoing need for employees to see and read information, documentation, monitors, identify equipment and supplies, and to be able to assess children’s needs.
- Frequent interactions with children, colleagues, clients, and visitors that require employee to verbally communicate as well as hear and understand spoken information, alarms, needs, and issues quickly and accurately, particularly during emergency situations.
- Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate supplies and equipment with precision and accuracy. This includes manual writing, frequent use of computer/tablet (typing, documenting), performing routine care duties (changing diapers, sanitizing/cleaning, preparing/serving food, medication/bottle preparation), and engaging with children in fine-motor play. Dexterity and strength of hands and arms is needed to frequently lift and carry children up to 35 pounds.
- Expected to utilize full range of movement to safely care for children. Full range of movement includes the ability to walk, bend to retrieve, push, pull, and lift/carry children and equipment weighing up to 35 pounds. Employees must interact with children at the child’s level, which requires the ability to frequently lean over, bend, squat/crouch, kneel, work on hands and knees, get down and back up from floor level, and sit on the floor or at a low level.
- Expected to be able to quickly respond to an emergency by running after a child in danger and perform all CPR/First Aid actions.
