RESPONSIBILITIES:
Functions in the surgical scrub role:
Demonstrates knowledge and expertise in instrumentation and
materials, such as sutures.
Demonstrates proper preparation and passing of needles, sutures,
surgical drains, medications and hemostatic agents.
Assists the surgeon as necessary, anticipating needs.
Demonstrates knowledge of surgical field set-up, including knowledge
of instruments and equipment.
Assists with the optimum utilization of resources,
including OR time by:
Using physician preference cards
Anticipating needs of the team
Using the proper resource person
Selecting equipment and supplies in an organized and timely manner
Uses supplies in a cost-effective manner
Demonstrates knowledge of AORN standards of asepsis,
including but not limited to:
Surgical scrubbing, donning of gowns and gloves
Creating and maintaining surgical field(s).
Attentiveness to contamination possibilities, responding appropriately
when it occurs
Demonstrates knowledge of Retained Surgical

the breakdown of the sterile field and preparation of instruments for
decontamination and return to Central Supply and Processing.
Maintains a positive, professional relationship with
peers, patients, patient families/care-givers and other colleagues.
Maintains current BLS certification.
Participates in lifelong learning through continuing
education.
Participates in community activities.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
BASIC KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE:
High School Diploma or GED is required
Completion of at least one of the following options is required:
Graduate of an accredited surgical technologist program, or
Graduate of a surgical technologist associate degree program, or
Current certification as a CST, or
Current NCCT-TC (tech in surgery) certification (for applicants with past military experience only; military experience as a surgical technologist will be strongly considered), or
3 years of experience within the past 5 years as a surgical technologist
Successful completion of a Brown University Health on-the-job surgical technologist training program
Successful completion of the Community College of Rhode Island's certificate surgical technologist program
Current BLS Certification is required upon hire Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients throughout the life span with consideration of aging processes, human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.

Initiates, reviews and follows-up on patient accounts to ensure proper data collection for billing. Verifies all demographic and insurance information and obtains referrals as required. Interviews patient or patient’s representative in order to obtain complete and accurate third party health insurance and related personal/financial information. Follows-up on missing data by interviewing patients, families or calling employers, nursing homes and other facilitiesCompletes registration and enters all data obtained into hospital computer system. Prepares or completes manual records as follows:Ensures patient is properly identified in system per department policy. Verifies demographic and insurance information by asking open-ended questions.Registers all patients (Outpatient, ED, Inpatient and Observation) by entering and/or verifying demographic insurance information into hospital information system. Upgrades account to an active account status. Completes documentation required on financial clearance reports as indicated by Patient Advocate or Pre-Registration Office.Utilizes on line tools and/or telephone to verify coverage, determine level of benefits, and confirm that the primary care physician (PCP) matches the PCP that is recorded in hospital system. Contacts insurance carrier or company for missing information when necessary. Notifies Pre-Registration Office if coverage changes from pre-admit/pre-registration information.Identifies primary and secondary insurer. Properly records insurance information in system. Completes lien forms upon determination that a liability exists. Enter financial notes into system.Gathers paper referrals from patients, when required by the payer. Updates SMS with the appropriate documentation. Contacts Financial Counselor/Pre-Registration Office if the insurance does not verify or if the patient does not a referral when required by the payer. Utilizes system to determine self-pay balances for all patients.Uses reference tools to determine the expected payment due at time of service. Contacts Patient Financial Advocate to estimate expected payment on complex cases. Refers patients to Patient Financial Advocates if patients cannot meet the expected payment according to defined criteria. Notifies Physicians office by phone or fax of patient arrival to Emergency Department and/or admission to hospital per department policy. (ER patients only)Upgrades Observation to Inpatient accounts per department/hospital policy when appropriate.May pre-admit/pre-register, scheduled outpatients and inpatients, in hospital system. Contacts insured patient to verify demographics obtained at time of scheduling to complete any missing information.Verifies patient insurance coverage(s), both primary and secondary, “on-line” or by telephone. Obtains and verifies all other information require to secure payment through sources such as Worker’s Compensation, MSP, Medicare liability, liens, etc.Ensures referrals are obtained and confirms accuracy of the PCP.Establishes level of insurance benefits and expected payment for selected services. Determines the patient’s portion of payment, when applicable and arrange for payment prior to the provision of services. Checks outstanding balances incurred for previous services prior to contacting patient and follow collection policy concerning prepayment prior to the provision of additional services. When appropriate, medical necessity verifications for services to be provided will be performed by the servicing department and will also require that ABN’s be addressed for payment at the time of pre-registration. May collect prepayments by phone or mail, if there is enough time before admission or the provision of outpatient services to accomplish the collection, otherwise, instruct patient to bring payment at the time of admissionrrival. Refers insured patients who cannot meet their financial obligations including previously incurred hospital balances, current admission/outpatient expected non-covered charges and ABN’s to Patient Financial Advocates (in accordance with department policy).Updates status of financial clearance activities in system.Preparesssembles all necessary paperwork preparatory to the patient’s arrival.Reviews/corrects third party payer eligibility reports. Completes real time status transfers. Authorizes occupancy and collect payment for Private Room differentials. Also, reviews bed transfer list daily to endure the authorization and collection of all appropriate private room transfers. Collection of private room differentials may require visits to patient rooms. Monitors in-house accounts for open patient balances resulting from co-payments and deductibles. Tracks Medicare days and Lifetime Reserve Days, when applicable. Negotiates payment of same, before discharge and/or visit patient rooms to do so when required. Reviews all accounts prior to discharge to clear patient financially and/or direct patients to the Patient Advocate s required by department policy, if they are not cleared financially at the time of discharge. At arrival, at admission or in the patient’s room, may complete any missing documentation and paperwork required from patients and/or family members.May provide bed control by assigning patient to appropriate room whenever possible and notify nursing units. Coordinates with Nursing Department to assign patient beds in accordance with case management guidelines. Explains policy for private room requests and collects deposits when applicable.Monitors the bed tracking system for bed availability and bed status. Coordinates bed cleaning with the ESD department whenever necessary.Reviews newly assigned medical record numbers for duplication, reporting all duplicates on appropriate form.Attends and participates in staff meetingsMay be required as needed to provide coverage to numerous locations (hospital-based Admitting, ED and Outpatient areas as well as off-site registration areas) to meet patient/customer needsProtects and preserves patients right to privacy and confidentiality.Utilizes department equipment: i.e. fax machine, phone, visa machine, laptop PC and other technology as developed.Performs other related duties as required to support the operations of the Department. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: BASIC KNOWLEDGE:High school diploma or equivalent. Knowledge of medical terminology, third party insurance information and standard office computer applications required. Knowledge of third party payer, verification, and authorization process preferred. Typing and data entry skills required.EXPERIENCE:Six to twelve months previous third party billing or hospital registration experience. Third party billing knowledge. Data entry skills and PC experience required.WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:Sitting for long periods of time at a workstation requiring the continuous use of a computer and telephone. May have to do moderate to excessive walking, depending on the location of the assignment. Ability to lift up to 10 pounds.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Interviews patient to obtain pertinent medical history, to explain and instruct patient regarding procedure and to allay anxiety and elicit cooperation. Abstracts additional relevant information from patient 's chart or medical record.
Ensures that electrodes are properly sterilized, applies electrodes on predetermined measured positions on patient 's head and checks electrode performance. Performs premature baby testing at Rhode Island Hospital and /or Woman and Infants Hospital. Provides patient perpetration, including measuring of head and placement of electrodes. Observes three physiological parameters in addition to multi-channel EEG recordings: eye movements, respiration, and cardiac activity. Records clinical changes to explain EEG findings.
May conduct closed-circuit video recordings, requiring knowledge of electronic capabilities of equipment.
Conducts EEG monitoring on patients with specialized electrodes. Adheres to proper sterilization procedures in placing needle electrodes on patients. Provides stimulus where visual / auditory reactions are induced.
Maintains equipment in clean, operating condition; detects instrumental malfunction; makes minor repairs and adjustments and reports the need for major repairs.

The Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant is accountable to facilitate a quality hospital experience and outcome for patients within a highly specialized team in Neurointerventional Radiology and Vascular Neurology. The work performed will primarily be in three locations: The Emergency Department, Stroke Service and in Neurointerventional Radiology.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Demonstrates a fundamental knowledge in the field. Manages a caseload of patients in partnership with the healthcare team to optimize health status and coordinate care over time and across healthcare settings.
- Oversees care coordination in acute, home care, and ambulatory care settings as feasible.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Utilizes experienced-based knowledge with little technical supervision to perform all the duties of a CT Scan Technologist in routine and complex radiologic procedures in a satellite unit, or in a unit requiring the use of more difficult techniques such as Pediatrics, including but not limiting to: 2D, 3D, 4D, MIP, VR, SSD images.
Provides for the clinical experience of Radiology Technology students, instructing and guiding students through Radiology procedures in areas of responsibility. May review performance of students with supervisor.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Ensures proper decontamination of surgical instruments, syringes, and equipment in order to clean, identify and inspect.
· Processes procedure trays, instruments sets, orthopedic sets and equipment through the decontamination room according to established cleaning procedures.
· Performs leak test and decontamination for various endoscopes according to established procedures.

· Operates steam (flash and prevac), EPS Scope Processor and other equipment relating to sterilization of supplies, according to written Q.A. procedures.
· Identifies and checks instruments for proper operation and overall condition according to established procedures with no more than two documented errors annually.
Conducts biological monitoring for all sterilizers.
· Performs BowieDick and biological testing of all sterilizers in the department and operating room daily in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations.
· Incubates, interprets and records results of all biological tests.
· Immediately implements recall procedures when positive biological testing is encountered, notifying all affected departments, Sterile Processing Supervisor. Prepares O.R. case carts and performs Distribution rounds.
· Maintains prescribed inventory levels for each cart.

SUMMARY:
Under the general supervision of a laboratory manager and in accordance with established policies and procedures, prepares specimens of human body tissue and body fluids for microscopic evaluation by a pathologist in order to provide diagnostic information on diseases from surgical and post-mortem tissue specimens. Processes and prepares specimens for routine and some non-routine procedures.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Performs routine and non-routine specimen preparation in accordance with established policies and procedures. Prepares specimens for microscopic evaluation and analysis by placing in tissue processor, embedding in paraffin blocks, sectioning with a rotary microtome, mounting onto glass slides and staining with the proper chemical solutions. Coverslips and labels all slides prepared. Delivers slides as instructed.
Identifies and selects techniques to most effectively process and prepare unusual or delicate specimens or to perform special staining or rush procedures, as requested by manager or Pathologist.
Assists manager in monitoring and maintaining laboratory's Quality Control standards. Performs gross and microscopic examination of prepared histologic slides checking orientation and angle of specimen, staining quality and diagnostic value prior to release for diagnostic evaluation by Pathologist. Identifies unsatisfactory slides, determines cause and takes corrective action as indicated. Obtains and evaluates control materials utilizing histologic technique and microscopic examination.
Following established policies and procedures, inputs protocols to operate tissue processor, making adjustments as necessary to meet special processing requirements. Troubleshoots, corrects malfunctions or makes arrangements for servicing as appropriate.
Evaluates effects of tissue processing system shutdown on tissue samples utilizing knowledge of time required to adequately fix varying sizes and types of tissue specimens. Determines and implements most effective and timely alternative for specimen processing accordingly.
May participate in evaluation of new products, reagents, procedures and the like as requested by manager.
May perform duties including preparing frozen sections; preparing chemical dyes and solutions; decaying bone specimens; processing bone marrow specimens; maintaining control logs and other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Associates degree in Applied Science or equivalent education and experience as defined by CLIA standards.
National certification (or eligible) in Histology by ASCP or equivalent.
Knowledge of histochemistry and of the various techniques and procedures for preparing and processing tissue specimens for microscopic evaluation.
Analytical ability to troubleshoot instrumentation and quality control problems; to evaluate new procedures; to identify techniques to meet special case requirements, etc.

SUMMARY:
Under the general supervision of a laboratory manager and in accordance with established policies and procedures, prepares specimens of human body tissue and body fluids for microscopic evaluation by a pathologist in order to provide diagnostic information on diseases from surgical and post-mortem tissue specimens. Processes and prepares specimens for routine and some non-routine procedures.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Performs routine and non-routine specimen preparation in accordance with established policies and procedures. Prepares specimens for microscopic evaluation and analysis by placing in tissue processor, embedding in paraffin blocks, sectioning with a rotary microtome, mounting onto glass slides and staining with the proper chemical solutions. Coverslips and labels all slides prepared. Delivers slides as instructed.
Identifies and selects techniques to most effectively process and prepare unusual or delicate specimens or to perform special staining or rush procedures, as requested by manager or Pathologist.
Assists manager in monitoring and maintaining laboratory's Quality Control standards. Performs gross and microscopic examination of prepared histologic slides checking orientation and angle of specimen, staining quality and diagnostic value prior to release for diagnostic evaluation by Pathologist. Identifies unsatisfactory slides, determines cause and takes corrective action as indicated. Obtains and evaluates control materials utilizing histologic technique and microscopic examination.
Following established policies and procedures, inputs protocols to operate tissue processor, making adjustments as necessary to meet special processing requirements. Troubleshoots, corrects malfunctions or makes arrangements for servicing as appropriate.
Evaluates effects of tissue processing system shutdown on tissue samples utilizing knowledge of time required to adequately fix varying sizes and types of tissue specimens. Determines and implements most effective and timely alternative for specimen processing accordingly.
May participate in evaluation of new products, reagents, procedures and the like as requested by manager.
May perform duties including preparing frozen sections; preparing chemical dyes and solutions; decaying bone specimens; processing bone marrow specimens; maintaining control logs and other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Associates degree in Applied Science or equivalent education and experience as defined by CLIA standards.
National certification (or eligible) in Histology by ASCP or equivalent.
Knowledge of histochemistry and of the various techniques and procedures for preparing and processing tissue specimens for microscopic evaluation.
Analytical ability to troubleshoot instrumentation and quality control problems; to evaluate new procedures; to identify techniques to meet special case requirements, etc.
Ability to manipulate and mount microscopic tissues and sections onto slides and to operate rotary microme.
Ability to perform gross and microscopic examinations of histological slides for quality control purposes.
Interpersonal and communication skills to effectively interact with Pathologists.
Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care patients with consideration of aging processes, human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.
EXPERIENCE:
Experience in a clinical histology laboratory demonstrating familiarity with a wide range of histologic specimens and procedures normally acquired through clinical training.
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Works in a laboratory environment where there is exposure to odors, infectious materials, toxins, highly flammable solvents and solutions and other hazardous substances.
Subject to cuts on hands from microtome knives.
Works with tissues and specimens capable of transmitting disease, but chances of illness occurring are minimal when established work and safety procedures are followed.
May experience visual fatigue from cutting paraffin blocks of specimens.
