Medical Assistant - Part time, 24 hrs/wk - Bronson Orthopedics And Joint Specialist - John Street, KalamazooWorking under provider’s direction provides general nursing functions for the practice. Records vital signs, immunizations, provides initial patient assessment, obtains concise patient history, and provides various clinical information and support to providers. Processes and posts information to patient’s chart, educates patients and families regarding medications, treatments and care, and referrals. Employees providing direct patient care must demonstrate competencies specific to the population served.
High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required
MUST MEET ONE OF THE FOLLOWING:
- Successful completion of an accredited medical assistant program
- CMA/CCMA/RMA certified
- Meet eligibility requirements to take CMA/RMA and must be obtained within 6 months of hire
- Note: Vocational Coordinator to determine eligibility requirements for CMA or RMA within 6 months.
Responsibilities:
BLS certification is required within 90 days of hire/transfer.
Knowledge of clinical skills as required with Medical Assistant Certification/Registration.
Effective problem-solving and prioritization skills.
Must possess excellent interpersonal skills and process information in a confidential manner.
Must be able to communicate clearly and effectively with patients, doctors and other staff.
Ability to maintain patient confidentiality.
Ability to work independently and function as an integral team member with other healthcare professionals.
Must have personal computer skills with EMR experience highly desirable and the ability to input and retrieve data from the organization's computerized systems.
Must have excellent verbal and communication skills.
Ability to maintain positive customer service.
Ability to establish effective working relations with physicians, office staff, and employees in a team environment.
Must maintain the highest level of confidentiality.
Work which produces high levels of mental/visual fatigue, e.g., interactive and repetitive or small detailed work requiring alertness and concentration for sustained periods of time, the operation of and full attention to a personal computer or CRT between 40 and 70 percent of the time. Involves considerable standing or walking, regular lifting of light-weight objects (i.e., 20 pounds or less) and assisting with heavier tasks such as assisting in lifting and moving patients. Minor straining or fatiguing positions must be assumed, and some fatiguing physical motions are required.
Prepares patient for examination including patient assessment, histories, vital signs, medication reconciliation, and routine testing of hearing, vision or other.
Document pertinent information in chart.
Maintains documentation standards and reviews chart prior to appointment to assure requests and documents are in place.
Administer treatments as requested by the physician.
Obtain specimens for urine testing, phlebotomy, etc.
Performs laboratory tests as directed by the physician.
Accurately documents required information in patient charts.
Set up and assist physician with procedures (laceration repair, pap/pelvic, etc.).
Schedule outside tests or procedures for patients in other departments of facilities such as x-ray, MRI, etc.
Prepares patients for tests/procedures by providing appropriate instructions.
Coordinate admissions, referrals, call in prescriptions, etc.
Stock exam rooms with supplies as needed.
Conduct day to day inventory of supplies and report items to be ordered.
Assist in the scheduling of appointments in EMR system as required.
Able to screen calls and determine urgency, necessity of appointments or whether phone advice is sufficient.
Assists in completion of misc. patient forms (Worker Compensation, Disability, etc.)
Attend staff, educational or other meetings as required.
Performs other related duties as assigned by nurses, practice manager, or physician.

- Diploma, Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Nursing required 6-12 months experience in healthcare preferred
- Licensed RN in good standing with the State of Michigan required. BLS certification required

Coordinate admissions, referrals, call in prescriptions, etc.
Stock exam rooms with supplies as needed.
Conduct day to day inventory of supplies and report items to be ordered.
Assist in the scheduling of appointments in EMR system as required.
Able to screen calls and determine urgency, necessity of appointments or whether phone advice is sufficient.
Assists in completion of misc. patient forms (Worker Compensation, Disability, etc.)
Attend staff, educational or other meetings as required.

Must be mechanically inclined with a strong aptitude for problem solving equipment issues to root cause and suggest ideas for repair. Must have the ability to problem solve and think creatively in order to develop and maintain processes needed to stay on top of job duties and responsibilities.

Ongoing deficiencies of plan effectiveness, employee competencies and quality of performance in achieving job tasks and goals will be handled using Bronson’s performance correction path guidelines.
Coordinates Equipment Repairs: Not coordinating repairs accurately and timely creates wasted time and effects service to patients and customers. Manager will oversee repairs and communicate with Equipment Coordinator on any adjustments. Performance evaluation and evaluating accuracy of systems will be done weekly, monthly and annually by EVS Manager. Ongoing deficiencies of plan effectiveness, employee competencies and quality of performance in achieving job tasks and goals will be handled using Bronson’s performance correction path guidelines.
Supply chain: Not having adequate supplies on hand hinders service to patients and visitors. Not running out of supplies and evaluating par level systems will be a key factor in evaluating performance. This will be done daily or as needed. Issues will be followed up on by following Bronson’s performance correction path guidelines.
Rounding: Not inspecting needed areas on a regular basis for accuracy causes equipment and supplies to become fragmented and not where they belong. Additional time and recourses would be needed to re-align equipment and supplies properly. Rounding and audits of rooms will be done daily, weekly and monthly for accuracy. Manager will follow up with any performance issues.
Reporting: (Clerical/Office/Computer/Record Keeping): Not keeping up with office time or poor time management will create a lack of accurate reporting habits. Creating and building in solid workflow that sets aside time to manage reporting is critical. Sloppy, inaccurate and untimely reporting will result in verbal and/or written discipline by Manager.

GENERAL SUMMARY AND PURPOSE:
Procures, stores, and distributes pharmaceuticals, diagnostic agents, intravenous solutions and related equipment and supplies for all Saint Joseph Mercy Health System sites. Facilitates the distribution of pharmacy products across all operational units within the SJMHS. Monitors and maintains the pharmacy inventory using accepted industry inventory management techniques, information management systems, and technological enhancements. Responsible for the repackaging of products not commercially available in unit doses or needing a readable bar code. Processes and maintains related documentation as required by licensing, accrediting, and regulatory agencies. This position maintains the hospital formulary in hospital computer systems and bills medications requested by other departments, as necessary. The ILT coordinates the medications and equipment in ALS boxes and represents the hospital at ALS regional meetings.
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Education: High school graduate or GED equivalent
Minimum of one year education in related field, such as general business, computers, or inventory/operations management
Experience: Minimum of 2 years of progressively more responsible work experience as a hospital Pharmacy Technician or related experience including knowledge of the drug distribution process, experienced in drug formulary inventory control and billing processes.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Places purchase orders, receives pharmacy supplies, confirms product integrity, accuracy and expiration dating according to department standards. Collaborates with suppliers to resolve discrepancies or other problems. Restocks in appropriate storage locations. Responsible for the receipt and restock of medication and supplies. Is responsible for managing various ordering platforms for procuring pharmaceuticals.
- Participates in the establishment of appropriate inventory levels for pharmacy products at all points of service and intermediate storage locations using inventory management techniques. Anticipates and understands the impact of seasonal and/or atypical situations, makes special arrangements to maintain sufficient inventory, and communicates the status to operational staff on a timely basis. Ensures all products are within their expiration date and properly stored in accordance with licensing, regulatory and accrediting requirements.
- Conducts audits on utilization, purchasing and billing activity, investigates discrepancies, prepares reconciliation reports, and implements changes to continuously improve the accuracy, integrity and control of the purchasing functions.
- Collaborates with suppliers, customers and colleagues on an ongoing basis to assess product requirements, storage capabilities, special handling procedures, distribution options, utilization trends, safety and environmental issues, security and financial integrity. Sets priorities, designs procurement and distribution work flow processes, measures outcomes, and makes adjustments as necessary to meet our financial and quality objectives. Assumes responsibility for accurate completion of forms and procedures required to meet state and federal controlled substance regulations.
- Maintains a separate inventory for controlled substances, hazardous chemicals, investigational drugs, expired medications and outpatient oncology. Performs all related documentation and record keeping functions and submits reports as required.
- Ensures the accurate and timely delivery to end user departments of orders for medications, IV solutions and set, and pharmacy related supplies. Develops and implements plans to enhance customer satisfaction of this function. - Maintains appropriate stock of medications that have been repackaged and/or bar coded to be useable to the end user. Works in collaboration with the Automation Technician to maintain the software and hardware of pharmacy automation (ex. MedCarousel and Pentapack). Supports the system’s bar-coding initiatives.
- Participates in the training and orientation of new employees.
- Assumes responsibility for performance of job duties in the safest possible manner, to assure personal safety and that of coworkers, and to report all preventable hazards and unsafe practices immediately to management. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
A Sleep Tech gathers materials and sets up all necessary equipment for the test to be performed. Discusses test procedure with patient and answers any questions. Instructs patient on the use of PAP therapy. Prepares patient for test by applying appropriate electrodes and ancillary equipment to patient utilizing AASM standards. Calibrates machines according to standard procedures and recalibrates as needed. Monitors patient during testing. Adjusts and trouble shoots equipment as necessary to ensure success of the test procedure. Contacts physician if life-threatening or other emergency situations arise. Scores polygraphic records and summarizes findings for physician review. Cleans equipment as needed. Contacts appropriate sources for necessary repair. Maintains adequate stock levels of equipment and supplies. May collect urine samples for laboratory analysis. Assist in training new personnel in polysomnography techniques. Assist with answering the phone and scheduling patients for test procedures. Maintains current BLS/CPR and sleep certifications. Acquires 10 CEC's per year for sleep center accreditation. May assist with interviews for new hire employees. Assist with scoring training and comparisons. Assist with monitoring and evaluating technical quality of procedures performed in the Sleep Center. Maintains good rapport and cooperative relationships. Approaches conflict in a constructive manner. Helps to identify problems, offer solutions, and participate in their resolution. Maintains the confidentiality of information acquired pertaining to patient, physicians, colleagues, and visitors to Trinity Health. The Security Officer is often is the first and last hospital employee interacting with the public. POSITION PURPOSE
Conducts nocturnal polysomnograms, initiates nasal CPAP, conducts Multiple Sleep Latency Tests, and scores all types of tests performed.
REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND CERTIFICATION/LICENSURE
Education: Requires high school diploma or GED; Completed A-Step Program Certification
Experience: Twelve to eighteen months of related experience preferred
Certification/Licensure Requires board certification from the BRPT or ABSM.
Colleagues that are not registered or are CRPSGTs at the time of hire are required to successfully pass the board examination within the first 18 months of the date of hire.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
A Sleep Tech gathers materials and sets up all necessary equipment for the test to be performed. Discusses test procedure with patient and answers any questions. Instructs patient on the use of PAP therapy. Prepares patient for test by applying appropriate electrodes and ancillary equipment to patient utilizing AASM standards. Calibrates machines according to standard procedures and recalibrates as needed. Monitors patient during testing. Adjusts and trouble shoots equipment as necessary to ensure success of the test procedure. Contacts physician if life-threatening or other emergency situations arise. Scores polygraphic records and summarizes findings for physician review. Cleans equipment as needed. Contacts appropriate sources for necessary repair. Maintains adequate stock levels of equipment and supplies. May collect urine samples for laboratory analysis. Assist in training new personnel in polysomnography techniques. Assist with answering the phone and scheduling patients for test procedures. Maintains current BLS/CPR and sleep certifications. Acquires 10 CEC's per year for sleep center accreditation. May assist with interviews for new hire employees. Assist with scoring training and comparisons. Assist with monitoring and evaluating technical quality of procedures performed in the Sleep Center. Maintains good rapport and cooperative relationships. Approaches conflict in a constructive manner. Helps to identify problems, offer solutions, and participate in their resolution. Maintains the confidentiality of information acquired pertaining to patient, physicians, colleagues, and visitors to Trinity Health. Discusses patient and hospital information only among appropriate personnel in appropriately private places. Behaves in accordance with the Code of Conduct, Service Excellence Standards, and the Mission, Vision, Values and policies of Trinity Health. Assumes responsibility for performance of job duties in the safest possible manner, to assure personal safety and that of coworkers, and to report all preventable hazards and unsafe practices immediately to management
REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Interpersonal skills necessary to effectively communicate with patients when explaining testing and treatment procedures, and with physicians and other departmental personnel when gathering and exchanging patient- related information.
Analytical skills necessary to observe and evaluate patients during testing and treatments, and notify manager or physician in cases of emergency.
Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail approximately 75% of work time when operating equipment, monitoring equipment, recording data and scoring records.
Ability to walk and stand for approximately 25% of work time and to lift, pull, push and carry portable equipment for approximately 25% of work time.

Performs comprehensive and problem focused histories and physical examinations, interprets laboratory and radiologic tests. Interprets and correlates subjective and objective patient data, formulating a diagnosis. Under the direction of the physician, reviews patient findings and develops a treatment plan within the scope of practice. Performs above activities in the outpatient and inpatient settings. Employees providing direct patient care must demonstrate competencies specific to the population served.
Successful completion of a Physician Assistant program
Licensure as Physician Assistant and state DEA license to prescribe medications
Current prescriptive authority and collaborative agreement with oversight physician(s) should also be in place
Must maintain all requirements for medical staff privileges
• Ability to utilize word processing, spreadsheet, presentation programs, and other software relevant to the job
• Regularly communicates clearly and effectively both verbally and in writing (Utilizing SBAR technique)
• Communicates with internal customers such as, physicians, multi-disciplinary team, finance, management and external customers such as, patients, third party payers, community agencies on a daily basis and often simultaneously
Work which produces high levels of mental/visual fatigue, e.g., interactive and repetitive or small detailed work requiring alertness and concentration for sustained periods of time, the operation of and full attention to a personal computer or CRT between 40 and 70 percent of the time.

• Concurrent Clinical Management
• Coordinates care with the multi-disciplinary team to facilitate implementation of patients’ progress towards outcomes, which includes discharge or transfer of care. Acts as a clinical resource for the multi-disciplinary team. This is accomplished by:
o Assertive coordination among the multi-disciplinary team
o Identifying common patient complications and utilizes appropriate preventative measures.
o Assisting in the development and integration of quality measures/evidence into clinical practice.
Utilization Review:
• Performs an initial comprehensive assessment of the patient to determine if the patient requires a higher intensity of service and requires transfer to a hospital setting. This is accomplished by:
o Applying knowledge of regulatory and third party payor criteria.
o Utilization Management
o Facilitating timely discharges/transfers to the appropriate level of care.
Clinical Management
• Evaluate and appropriately manage patients.
