7S is a cardiac telemetry unit specializing in heart failure management. Nurses on the unit are trained to care for patients with Ventricular Assist Devices (VADs), gaining valuable experience in advanced cardiac therapies. New graduate nurses can expect to begin VAD training after six months on the unit, while experienced nurses will receive VAD training after orientation.
Posting Job Description
POSITION PURPOSE
The dedicated Charge Nurse is a registered nurse responsible for providing shift-to-shift leadership for the practice and delivery of safe, effective, efficient, ethical, and culturally competent care to the unit patient population. This pivotal role bridges direct patient care with administrative responsibilities, ensuring optimal patient outcomes through effective leadership, resource allocation, and collaboration with the interdisciplinary healthcare team. The Charge Nurse ensures adherence to established policies, promotes a collaborative work environment, and supports staff development while maintaining patient safety and satisfaction.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Develops and maintains departmental daily staffing plan detailing appropriate employee classifications and qualifications consistent with the department's operational plan, projected volumes, patient/acuity and other relevant indicators. Assures compliance with staffing plan.
Oversees daily operations, staff management, and coordination of interdepartmental activities within the unit or department during the assigned shift.
Responsible for resolving clinical issues, and serving as a liaison between nurses, physicians, and administrative teams.
Provides orientation/education for staff and students to ensure assigned patients have a positive care experience.
Leads staff in the delivery of safe and effective patient care.
Delivers nursing care by assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating patient care in collaboration with the physician.
Provides input on staff interviewing and hiring decisions as delegated by the unit leader.
Maintains knowledge of documentation requirements needed for patient records.
Ensures compliance with all policies and procedures governing assigned services, including Joint Commission standards, safety protocols, and applicable federal, state, and regulatory requirements.
Serves as a resource, mentor, and role model in delivering patient care using a team approach.
Facilitates communication between patient/family, physicians and other caregivers to achieve consensus for the plan of care. Consults with the Ethics Committee as appropriate.
Leads and promotes evidence-based practice and research among unit leaders and staff.
Leads quality improvement activities including performance improvement processes to facilitate clinical practice changes.
Conduct follow-up on incident reports as directed by the Unit leader and participate in ongoing audits of nursing-sensitive indicators to ensure regulatory compliance. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, chart reviews, patient safety audits, shift-based crash cart checks, and other quality assurance activities as identified by the facility.
Functions independently with minimal supervision from Nursing Leadership, guided by the Nurse Practice Act, MercyOne Central IA Market and Trinity Health policies, established nursing standards, and sound professional judgment.
Plans unit and nursing resource utilization based on established admission, discharge and transfer criteria, initiating appropriate intervention and collaboration to optimize patient care and unit/department operations.
Serves as a group leader and fulfills an assistant supervisory or lead role, providing guidance and support to team members. Additionally, it contributes to Human Resources functions by offering input and recommendations on personnel matters.
Identifies and communicates staff needs to the unit leader.
Serves as a resource or “Super User” for documentation in the electronic medical record.
Leads or participates in interdisciplinary patient rounds and care conferences, management rounding to patients and staff, and Rounding to Influence (Safety First).
Reviews and codes as indicated for shift needs in timekeeping system.
Collaborate with Unit leader to balance schedule after closure of self-scheduling time-period and prior to completion of schedule.
Leads or delegates daily huddles and maintains huddle boards in collaboration and direction from Unit leader.
Assists nursing and interdisciplinary team in patient/family education and discharge planning.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Possession of a current or compact state license as a Registered Nurse issued/defined by the State of Iowa.
Bachelor’s degree in nursing preferred.
12 months of RN experience required. 24 months preferred.
Proof of completion of Mandatory Reporter – Child and/or Dependent Adult Abuse training within three (3) months of hire.
Basic Life Support (BLS) for the Healthcare Provider certified or obtained within three (3) months of hire. Acceptable credentialing bodies and certifications include American Heart Association Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers.
Unit specific credentialing and education active and in good standing.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Graduation from an accredited school of nursing is required. Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) is preferred. Current Iowa RN license, (current IL license if working in IL) required. Basic Life Support (BLS) is required within three (3) months of hire. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) is required within three (3) months of hire. Proof of completion of Mandatory Reporter for both Child and Dependent Adult Abuse training is required within six (6) months of hire. Specialty practice certification is preferred.. Must be comfortable operating in a collaborative, shared leadership environment. An Operating Room Registered Nurse at MercyOne provides perioperative patient care, specifically in the intraoperative phase, in both the scrub and circulating roles according to established guidelines. Serves the population from neonate, infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric.
Essential Functions:

As a Health Unit Coordinator at MercyOne, you will perform clerical duties that support the daily activities of nursing units. Works cooperatively with the nursing staff and other health team members to enhance quality patient care and patient satisfaction. General Requirements:
Acts as receptionist and assists in-patient care delivery when appropriate.
- Answers telephone calls promptly and politely and answers questions as appropriate.
- Ensures that accurate messages reach appropriate parties.
- When nursing staff not available, responds to patient call/emergency lights if possible.
- Politely greets patients, visitors, physicians and other health team members and directs appropriately.
- Anticipates needs of physicians, staff, patients and visitors (i.e., pulls charts for rounds, greets people by name when possible).
- Maintains knowledge of and efficiency utilizes all computer applications of assigned nursing units.
- Maintains knowledge, skills and ability to effectively work in at least 2 nursing units within one year of hire.
Prepares and maintains patient charts.
- Maintains sufficient quantity of chart supplies.
- Assembles new patient charts and when appropriate prepares in advance.
- Accommodates needs for special forms (i.e., renal, cardiac, diabetic, neuro flow sheet).
- Follows guidelines for thinning charts.
- Files reports such as lab, x-ray, EKG, H & P’s, consults, etc.
- Communicates abnormal results to appropriate person.
- Files charts for easy retrieval. Assists in admission, transfer, and discharge processing.
- Verifies availability of rooms for occupancy.
- Communicates with staff regarding new admissions, transfers and discharges.
- Compiles admission paperwork such as new and old charts, Kardex, listing allergies, etc. in accordance with unit specifications.
Education:
- High School plus specialized training (min. 6 months – 2 years): Medical Secretary, Medical Administrative Secretary, or Medical Assistant degree preferred.

Position Purpose:
The Clinic Patient Care Technician (PCT) provides essential support to physicians, advanced practice providers, and nursing staff by performing delegated clinical and administrative tasks that facilitate patient care and clinic operations. Under direct supervision, the PCT assists with rooming patients, obtaining vital signs, collecting basic health data, performing point-of-care testing, and supporting minor procedures. What you will do:
- Knows, understands, incorporates, and demonstrates the Trinity Health Mission, Vision, and Values in behaviors, practices, and decisions.
- Rooms patients, collects and documents vital signs, chief complaint, pain level, allergies, fall risk, and basic health history under provider supervision. Assists with general office duties including registration, scheduling, referrals, copying, filing, and records retrieval.
- Opens clinical notes and prepares exam rooms with necessary supplies and equipment.
- Assists providers with minor procedures and patient care tasks appropriate to age and condition.
- Demonstrates ability to recognize urgent/emergency needs and initiate appropriate emergency procedures. Observes and reports changes in patient condition, behavior, or status to the provider or nurse.
- Collects and processes basic lab tests (e.g., EKG, glucometer) following proper aseptic techniques. Performs laboratory functions according to collection, processing, and documentation policies. Retrieves lab results, radiology reports, and medical records for provider review.
- Completes and submits charge tickets in the electronic health record; identifies billable supplies and services and obtains required documentation (e.g., ABN).
- Schedules patient appointments, lab/diagnostic tests, and referrals; reviews test prep instructions with patients and refers to RN or provider for further education.
Hours/Schedule:
- Full Time/Day Shift with occasional Weekends
Minimum Qualifications:
- Must be comfortable operating in a collaborative, shared leadership environment.
- Must be at least 16 years of age.
- High school diploma or GED.
Completion of one of the following:
- MercyOne Patient Care Tech training program
- 75-hour or 120-hour Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) program
- 136-hour certified Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) program
