Job Summary
The Patient Care Technician (PCT) II performs patient care activities, including but not limited to identifying and responding to abnormal findings, appropriately escalating changes in the patient’s condition to the nurse, and activities of daily living (ADL’s). The PCT II provides assistance with patient elimination, hygiene, comfort, safety, nutrition, and progress activity and practices patient and family centered care. This role typically reports to the Unit Manager.Job Description
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: (None)
Licenses/Certifications:Â Certified in Basic Life Support issued by (AHA) American Heart Association within 90 days of employment.
Experience / Knowledge / Skills:
- One (1) year of prior patient care experience (e.g. Certified Nursing Assistant, or Emergency Medical Technician, or Patient Care Technician) or similar role required, preferably in an acute care setting.
- Proficiency in all Core Competencies of the PCT I and II position as noted in Memorial Hermann’s PCT Competency Based Tool and as validated by Memorial Hermann Clinical Education no later than the end of orientation.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Provides direct patient care for assigned patients under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse.
- Direct patient care duties include but are not limited to vital signs (pre and post treatment, as applicable), visual monitoring of a patient’s condition, hygiene support, toileting support, mobility support, nutrition support, bathing support, charting, and other activities of daily living as needed.
- Responsible for timely and accurate documentation of information. Should appropriately report any unusual changes or findings to the nurse.Â
- Assists in the maintenance of a safe and clean working environment.
- Demonstrates safe work practices and attitudes; follows safety rules; works to prevent unsafe conditions and behaviors; participates in organizational departments’ safety programs; adheres to all Memorial Hermann policies and procedures.
- Obtains and prepares laboratory specimens as prescribed within the scope of the role.
- Helps orient new employees as appropriate.
- Ensures safe care to patients, staff and visitors; adheres to all Memorial Hermann policies, procedures, and standards within budgetary specifications including time management, supply management, productivity and quality of service.
- Promotes individual professional growth and development by meeting requirements for mandatory/continuing education and skills competency; supports department-based goals which contribute to the success of the organization.

- Performs cardiac echo studies, while ensuring precise and accurate data is transmitted for physician completion. Provides additional support for pharmacologic and exercise stress procedures, holter testing, EKG and/or cardiac event monitoring as well as advanced procedures when needed (i.e. TAVR).
- Provides care for the physical needs of patients when conducting the cardiac echo studies. Educates patients who require inpatient or outpatient echo exams by providing explanations of purpose and techniques used during the exam. Proactively identifies issues and how to address them for optimum outcomes.
- Provides direct assistance to physicians and other health care team members during cardiac echo studies including, patient preparation before procedures and performs proper sterile techniques as indicated in support of the procedure.
QUALITY/SAFETY ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Identifies and recognizes cardiac structures accurately, including: calculate valve area, pressure gradients and ejection fraction when performing echo studies. Confirms the quality of the study is concise and clear to optimize best images for the patient care team and interpreting physician.
- Identifies abnormal findings when performing exams or processing data and takes corrective action or communicates immediately, when appropriate, to proper personnel for the best results.
- Maintains proper sterile techniques for procedures, regularly practices aseptic techniques, and ensures compliance with infection control procedures. Complies with job, departmental and hospital safety standards, practices and policies.
- Ensures all patient care equipment has had QC performed as required and is in safe working order prior to use. Reports any malfunctions to management and regularly practices preventive maintenance procedures; calls for service if needed.
- Assists with implementation and education of departmental based safety initiatives and standards of practice.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
PEOPLE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Directs patient contact supporting the performance of clinical protocols.
- Enrolls subjects into prospective studies and obtains informed consent from patients and legally authorized representatives in accordance with hospital policy and the study protocol.
- Collaborates with the Principal Investigator, interprofessional research team, fellowship stakeholders, and health care professionals regularly for problem resolution and/or achievement of research study goals.
- Serves as a mentor and provides educational and research oversight for other learners in the applicable department or research lab. Role models effective verbal, non-verbal and written communication, which includes active listening and teaching, assisting in development of such skills. Provides contributions towards improvement of department scores for employee engagement, i.e., peer-to-peer accountability.
SERVICE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Collects and processes study data and maintain study databases in accordance with study protocols.
- Develops and conducts statistical analyses for interventional and observational studies using relevant statistical software.
QUALITY/SAFETY ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Participates in study data auditing and monitoring procedures.
- Ensures study procedures are being conducted in accordance with hospital and research institute policy and Good Clinical Practice.
- Communicates study findings to applicable hospital committees and stakeholders.
- Completes fellowship objectives and all assigned duties as listed in the identified specific fellowship program.
FINANCE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Participates in grant preparation and formal requests to solicit financial support for ongoing and planned studies.
- Manages study finances and resources needed to conduct a clinical study. Self-motivated to independently manage time effectively and prioritize daily tasks.
GROWTH/INNOVATION ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Develops study protocols, policies, procedures, and order sets based on evidence from published studies and findings from internal studies.
- Prepares and delivers educational presentations and deliver written reports of scholarship, including but not limited to, published manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals, quarterly activity reports to fellowship stakeholders, and activity reports to external study sponsors as needed.
- Assists with recruitment of future fellows into this fellowship training program.
