Position Purpose
Mercy Fitzgerald is seeking a dedicated RN Care Manager – Utilization Management to join our Care Coordination team. Under the general supervision of the Manager of Care Coordination, this role supports the delivery of effective and efficient patient care by ensuring appropriate utilization of resources and reimbursement. The RN Care Manager is accountable for utilization management within an assigned caseload and collaborates with the healthcare team to confirm medical necessity for admission and continued stay.
What You Will Do
- Perform clinically based utilization reviews to support efficient patient care delivery.
- Apply InterQual criteria to confirm medical necessity for inpatient admission and continued stay.
- Collaborate with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to ensure appropriate resource use and reimbursement.
- Screen patients for Intensive Case Management programs, including disease management and discharge planning.
- Monitor patient progress and outcomes to support high-quality, cost-effective care.
- Document findings and interventions in the electronic health record and clinical databases.
Minimum Qualifications
- Education:
- Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) required.
- Licensure/Certification:
- Active Registered Nurse license in the State of Pennsylvania required.
- Case Management certification from an accredited organization preferred.
- Experience:
- Minimum of 3 years of clinical experience, with emphasis on medical/surgical nursing.
- Experience in Case Management, Discharge Planning, and Utilization Management preferred.
- Skills:
- Knowledge of managed care, government payers, and third-party reimbursement.
- Familiarity with InterQual criteria and MIDAS system preferred.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
- Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
- Ability to document effectively in electronic health records.

Job Description:

Uses provider power plans to ensure all necessary orders are proposed, signed off and sent for hospital orders. Meets with pre-op patients to explain the surgery process..
Essential Functions
- Creates and manages provider’s surgery/hospital procedure schedules. Maintains any changes, cancellations, rescheduling and/or clinical follow up on these schedules. Uses Provider power plans to ensure all necessary orders are proposed, signed off and sent for hospital orders.
- Obtains authorization for surgeries/hospital procedures by researching coverage and obtain prior auth for them. Verifies eligibility and benefits. Coordinates referral for patients that will go out of network. Point of contact for surgery authorization questions. Obtain proper CPT code from provider for authorization.
- Proposes iCentra requirements to create a pre-surgical FIN# and to create required surgical scheduling card for the Hospital scheduler to pull the case information, where applicable.
- Coordinate with the provider to ensures all necessary surgical/procedure equipment is requested for any special item that needs to be pulled from Hospital supplies or special equipment that needs to be brought in by surgical supply Reps. Coordinates any necessary Hospital items with nursing staff at the Hospital. Calls in surgical/procedure order for Providers the Hospital surgery/procedure scheduler day before cases.
- Meets with surgery/procedure patients to explain the process. This includes pre-op labs, tests, or any pre-requisite that needs prior attention. Coordinates with Providers and Medical Staff any red flag pre-operative health concerns for patient safety.
- Scan and Document process in patient charts and relay cost estimations. Investigate billing disputes for surgery/procedure.

Minimum Qualifications

Job Profile:
- Applied Behavior Analysis skills.Implement behavior intervention plans designed by Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) to support individuals with developmental disabilities. Conduct direct one-on-one therapy sessions with clients to teach and reinforce appropriate behaviors.
- Clinical Duties.Provide support in various settings, such as homes, schools, or community locations, to address diverse behavioral challenges. Document and maintain accurate records of client sessions, behavior plans, and progress notes in accordance with regulatory standards. Collaborate with the interdisciplinary team, including BCBAs, parents, and other professionals, to ensure a comprehensive and consistent approach to treatments. Participate in regular supervision and training sessions to enhance skills and stay updated on best practices in applied behavior analysis. Minimum Requirements
- Hold a valid Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) certification within 60 days of hire.

1. Manages comprehensive and individualized care for orthopedic patients and their families in the inpatient phase of hospitalization and immediate post discharge and in the ambulatory setting.
2. Completes daily rounds; consults and/or pre-procedure/evaluations (as applicable). Participates in peri-operative patient care which may include (but is not limited to) first assisting in the operative suite.

Strong understanding and comfort level with computer systems. Demonstrated technical proficiency including experience with insurance verification/eligibility tools, EPIC electronic medical record, patient liability estimation tools, electronic email, Microsoft Office, internet browser and phone technology.
Understanding of basic medical and insurance terms and abbreviations typically used in the patient scheduling and registration process.
HIPAA-compliant and knowledgeable of applicable state and federal rules/regulations. Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information according to internal policies.
General understanding of health insurance: Medicare, Medicaid, managed care, and commercial payers. Knowledge and ability to articulate explanations of Medicare/HIPAA/EMTALA rules and regulations and comply with updates on insurance pre-certification requirements.
Excellent organizational skills.
Demonstrated ability to effectively act as a resource to other teammates.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
This position requires travel, therefore, will be exposed to weather and road conditions.
Operates all equipment necessary to perform the job.
Exposed to a normal office environment with significant patient and public contact. May be exposed to ill or contagious patients.
Must be able to transition from sitting to standing frequently. Must be able to stand and sit for extended periods of time and be physically mobile throughout the workday.
Frequently lifts to 10 lbs. and occasionally lifts 20 lbs. or more. This occurs when moving equipment and supplies and when transporting patients and/or charts.
Must be able to push/pull up to 50 lbs. with assistance.
Sensory requirements include vision, hearing and touch. Must also be able to speak clearly.
Must be able to use hands with fine motor skills for keyboard data entry.
May be asked to work a flexible schedule at times to meet the needs of the department.
