$22.90 - $36.15Major Responsibilities:
- Prepares and rooms the patient for exam by obtaining vital signs and documenting/updating pertinent health information (i.e. chief complaint, allergies, medications).
- Performs laboratory procedures (i.e. strep test, wound culture, specimen collection, etc.) using principles of aseptic technique and standard precautions / infection control guidelines.
- Assists the physician/provider with procedures and surgeries such as pelvic exams, allergy scratch testing, EMG, cautery, colposcopy, etc.
- Administers medications, under physician/provider orders, including: immunizations, antibiotics, pain medications, vitamins, topical agents, and insulin. With limitations, initiates, maintains and discontinues IV therapy; administering selected fluids with pre-mixed medications.
- Provides basic patient education on the performance of tasks, skills, treatment and self-care. Follows through with necessary procedure or test requests, prescription refills, new appointment times and referrals to other facilities or services. Refers questions to registered nurses and physicians/providers per scope of practice guidelines and relays information back to patient as directed.
- Communicates with physicians and other members of the health care team. Documents and communicates accurate and timely information regarding patient conditions.
- Performs advanced clinical tasks or skills such as removal of sutures and staples, catheterization, audiograms, laboratory procedures (throat/nose culture, drug screen, phlebotomy - butterfly, venous access, heel stick), EKG, spirometry, Holter monitor application, casting, complex wound care, etc., with demonstrated competency and under clinical supervision.
- Organizes and prepares exam rooms, lab and work areas including: cleaning, stocking, ordering supplies, and maintaining equipment. Performs various patient positioning and transporting duties, which require lifting and pushing/pulling, while utilizing proper technique.
- Completes routine maintenance and quality monitoring of clinic equipment using appropriate technique when cleaning, sterilizing and caring for instruments and other equipment.
- Participates in patient centered initiatives, care management, performance and quality improvement activities.
- Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served. Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the department's policies and procedures. Age-specific information is developed further in the departmental job standards.
Licensure, Registration, and/or Certification Required:
- Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) license issued by the state in which the team member practices, and
- Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) needs to be obtained within 45 days unless department leader has determined it is not required.
Education Required:
- Completion of an accredited or approved program in Practical Nursing.
Experience Required:
- No experience required.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:
- Excellent communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills; ability to develop rapport and maintain positive, professional relationships with a variety of patients, staff and physicians.
- Excellent organization, prioritization and problem solving skills.
- Proficient computer skills including keyboarding, navigation within a windows operating system, and use of electronic mail with exposure to electronic medical records systems.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
- Must sit, stand, walk, lift, squat, bend, twist, crawl, kneel, climb, and reach above shoulders throughout the workday.
- Must be able to:
- lift up to 50 lbs from floor to waist.
- lift up to 20 lbs over the head.
- carry up to 40 lbs a reasonable distance.
- Must be able to:
- push/pull with 30 lbs of force.
- perform a sliding transfer of 150 lbs with a second person present.
- Will be exposed to the following hazards on a frequent basis: mechanical, electrical, chemical, blood and body fluids. Will be required to wear protective clothing and equipment as needed.
- Must have functional speech, vision, hearing, and touch with ability to use fine-hand manipulation skills.
- Operates all equipment essential to perform the job.

SUMMARY
The Rehabilitation Aide reports directly to the Clinical Manager/Assistant Clinical Manager and performs duties under the supervision of Rehabilitation professionals. The Rehabilitation Aide assists clinicians in providing treatments designed to relieve pain and maximize function of patients across Brown University Health. The Rehabilitation Aide transports patients, maintains supply inventory, and prepares and cleans treatment areas. Provides office and systems support at all Rehabilitation Service locations for Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and Speech Language Pathology/Audiology.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Principal Duties
Once deemed competent, and in accordance with the established treatment plan, the Rehabilitation Aide:
- Assists therapists and assistants in patient care as requested.
- Carries out patient intervention per therapist or assistant direction, including positioning, mobilizing, and exercising patients.
The supervising Physical Therapist, Occupational Therapist, Speech-Language Pathologist, or Audiologist will be present on the premises and immediately available to the Rehabilitation Aide when providing treatment. A Physical Therapist Assistant or Occupational Therapy Assistant may also provide supervision but must be on the premises, in line of sight, and immediately available.
Additional Duties
- Maintains gym and all treatment areas to Environment of Care (EOC) standards.
- Assists with EOC safety rounds.
- Enters work orders as applicable to gym and treatment areas.
- Maintains cleanliness of department equipment per infection control policies and equipment guidelines.
- Maintains equipment logs.
- Ensures that rehabilitation equipment, including but not limited to wheelchairs, walkers, and crutches, is clean and functional.
- Cleans and prepares treatment areas between patient use.
- Maintains and inventories therapeutic supplies, equipment, linen, and housekeeping supplies.
- Transports patients to and from treatment areas, exercising care in the handling of patients.
- May assist with scheduling, order entry, charge reconciliation, and scanning into the Electronic Health Record.
- Communicates in person or by fax/phone with patients, providers, healthcare team members, referral sources, and payers.
- Assists with departmental statistics and quality assurance, program evaluation, and environmental and infection control activities.
- Participates in meetings as required.
- Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Basic Knowledge
- Interpersonal skills necessary to work effectively with patients and other members of the healthcare team.
- Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to assist with providing care to patients throughout Brown University Health, with consideration of the aging process, human development stages, and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.
- Effective verbal and non-verbal communication skills.
- Proficient using Microsoft Excel and Word software programs.
Experience
- High School graduate or GED required.
- Associate's degree preferred.
- One year of related experience in fitness training or direct patient care, such as a Rehabilitation Aide or CNA position, required.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements
- Physical ability to lift, position, and transport patients.
- Considerable reaching, stooping, bending, crouching, and kneeling.
- Frequent walking, standing, and lifting of equipment and patients.
- Some exposure to communicable diseases and cleaning agents/chemicals.
- Moderate physical effort (lift and carry up to 25-35 lbs.).
Independent Action
- Performs independently within department policies and practices. Refers specific complex problems to supervisor where clarification of departmental policies and procedures may be required.
Supervisory Responsibility
- May direct volunteers/interns to assist with tasks related to environment of care.

SPECIMEN PROCESSING FUNCTIONS:
- Receives and accessions specimens for processing noting the demographic information on the requisition slip and specimen label.

- Takes temperatures and records receipt of suppliesResponds to and assists in tracking and resolving laboratory related concerns.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Phlebotomy certificate through National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences and/or completion of a Phlebotomy certificate program to include formal internship demonstrating 100 successful venipunctures.In lieu of internship, 6 months of phlebotomy experience may be considered.
- In lieu of phlebotomy certification, 5 plus years direct phlebotomy experience may be considered.
- Ability to perform venipuncture techniques and capillary puncture on adults, children and infants.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Investigates outbreaks of infection in conjunction with department. Establishes etiology, develops interventions and evaluate outcomes.
Obtains specimens from patients, hospital personnel and environmental reservoirs to determine source of infection during outbreaks. Uses molecular biological techniques to type bacteria and determine similarities of isolates. Monitors endemic hospital-acquired infections or potential sources of infection following procedural changes by use of surveillance cultures. Carries out investigations to determine risk of infection from medical devices.
Coordinates and performs safety and surveillance rounds throughout the hospital in collaboration with safety and facilities management personnel. Integrates monitoring of infection control practices and standard precautions into rounds.
Serves as consultant and educator to healthcare team members. Develops and presents in-service education programs regarding infection control for all areas of the hospital. Compiles and analyzes infection control data and creates related reports for end users. Compiles and analyzes data from research studies in order to identify risk factors and etiologies associated with specific infections.
Utilizes local area computer network for the Epidemiology and Infection Control Department. Participates in the development or updating of computer programs to enhance the productivity of the Epidemiology and Infection Control Department.
Performs surveillance activities as designated on an assigned basis. Carries out delegated responsibilities in the absence of the Director and/or Medical Director of Epidemiology and Infection Control Department.
Reviews, revises and updates policies and procedures related to infection control practice.
Represents Epidemiology and Infection Control Department on assigned committees and/or Task Forces.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION:
Bachelor 's Degree in medical technology, nursing or related field. Evidence of graduate level courses in microbiology or epidemiology preferred.
Certification in Epidemiology and Infection Control is preferred and required within 3 years of hire.
Demonstrated knowledge of the care provided in the tertiary, acute-care hospital to patients throughout the continuum of life with consideration of aging processes, human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.
