PRN/registry Position. Shifts are on an as-needed basis. A commitment to work a minimum of 4 shifts per month (based on staffing/departmental needs), including 1 weekend (Sa and Su). A commitment to 1 Summer and 1 Winter Holiday
Pay Range:
$30.70 - $49.60Job Description/Major Responsibilities:
- Provides crisis intervention, brief psychotherapy, triage, resource development and disposition recommendations for behavioral health patients of the Emergency Department and Medical Center via both in person and via telehealth as indicated by site.
- Provides direct specialized care with patients who have been identified as needing psychological assessment or interventions beyond the scope of general patient care practice, including assessment of patients’ mental status, psychosocial stressors, level of functioning, risk, support systems, strengths and needs.
- Provide ongoing rounding, counsels patients utilizing solution focused therapy and utilizes problem solving collaboratively with patient to stabilize condition/crisis.
- Uses short-term crisis intervention techniques and/or referrals to other support services to support patients and families dealing with acute emotional distress, addictions, grief, loss, disability and traumatic lifestyle changes.
- Develops discharge and safety plan in direct consultation with patient, family, physician and health care team. Coordinates arrangements to implement plan.
- Facilitates admission process to inpatient psychiatric unit (site specific).
- Ensure patients are pre-certified for recommended level of care.
- Communicates with staff and physicians of the Emergency Department, medical unit, Behavioral Health Services and/or human service agencies to obtain all relevant patient information, refers patients and consults with other staff regarding patient progress to provide optimum patient care.
- Participate in unit meetings, trainings related to departmental changes or enhancements and education.
- Adheres to relevant state and federal guidelines governing patient care and treatment of sensitive information, particularly the Illinois Developmental Disability and Mental Health Code, the Illinois Confidentiality Code, HIPPA and EMTALA.
- Ability to flex hours within the department and cross train to related job roles/duties to meet the needs of the department.
- Ensure accurate data collection for billing, the management information system, and other purposes in accord with organizational policies and procedures.
Licensure:
- LSW, LPC minimum
- LCSW and LCPC strongly encouraged to apply and would be considered at the Level 2 candidacy.
- Candidates without licensure but preparing for licensure may be eligible, but hiring would be contingent upon receiving minimum licensure within an established time at point of hire.
Education/Experience Required:
- Master's Degree in behavioral health sciences or related field with a minimum of two years’ experience in a mental health or related setting.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:
- Ability to work under stressful conditions and in difficult situations with strong interpersonal skills; knowledge of techniques to de-escalate aggressive behavior. High tolerance for emotionally stressful situations sometimes encountered daily with psychiatric and substance abuse patients
- Risk assessment, psychotherapy and family/group treatment skills, and knowledge of behavioral health referrals and resources.
- Knowledge of DSM-V diagnostic categories.
- Knowledge and education on the typical development related to the lifespan (i.e., normal patterns of adolescent behavior and look for signs or normal aging, prior experience with various age groups is preferred.)
- Basic computer and typing skills; Organization and time management skills.
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions:
- Ability to work under stressful conditions and in difficult situations; May be exposed to hazardous materials and life-threatening diseases; Knowledge of universal precautions a must. Works within and supports a shared governance model. Is customer focused. Transporting patients may be required. May at times come in contact with violent and may be involved in restraining patients.
- If position has direct patient care or direct patient contact the following lifting requirement supersedes any previous lifting requirement effective 06/01/2015. Ability to lift up to 35 pounds without assistance. For patient lifts of over 35 pounds, or when patient is unable to assist with the lift, patient handling equipment is expected to be used, with at least one other associate, when available. Unique patient lifting/movement situations will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.

POSITION SUMMARY
This position assesses, plans, implements, evaluates and documents nursing care of patients in accordance with organizational policies and in accordance with standards of professional nursing practice utilizing the framework for professional nursing practice and development. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Performs phlebotomy (the practice of entering a vein to draw blood) services on inpatients and outpatients, as requested by physicians, in support of the hospital's mission of patient care.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Completion of a phlebotomy education program or an allied health education program that includes phlebotomy education and a minimum of 50 successful unaided venipunctures.

1. Qualification to perform phlebotomy by one or more of the following criteria:
- Certified as a phlebotomist by American Medical Technologist (AMT), National Credentialing Agency (NCA) or American Society for Clinical Pathologist (ASCP).
- Completion of a NAACLS accredited phlebotomy program.
- Completion of a phlebotomy education program that includes 100 successful unaided blood collections by both venipuncture and capillary collection.
- Completion of an accredited allied health professional/occupation education program which includes phlebotomy training and completion of 100 successful unaided blood collections by both venipuncture and capillary collection.
EXPERIENCE:

1. Performs, in a timely manner, blood collection using established laboratory guidelines designed to acquire acceptable specimens used in diagnostic and therapeutic procedures to meet the needs of patients, as requested by the ordering provider.
2. Follows standard operating procedures to perform basic diagnostic procedures to produce accurate results.
3. Operates basic laboratory equipment (e.g., centrifuges, computer system, tube transport system, timers) consistent with standard operating procedures.
4. Restocks, as required, the work area of needed supplies to assist co‑workers in the performance of their duties.
5. Must demonstrate, after receiving instruction and training, knowledge of the patient care requirements for all age groups as required by the laboratory standard operating procedures.
6. Utilizes time, material, and resources in an economical manner, prioritizing and arranging workload to provide for optimal patient care and efficiency.
7. Promptly collects patient specimens, to reduce wastage of time, materials and resources, unnecessary requests for additional specimens, and undue delays in result reporting, in accordance with the standard operating procedure.
8. Completes assigned workload within established time frames by adjusting organization of workload, (e.g., daily monitoring, turnaround time studies).
9. Maintains effective communication with the laboratory sections, administrative office, coworkers, personnel, patients and other departments as necessary to assure identification of problems and provide problem resolution in support of the hospital's mission of patient care.
10. Answers the telephone in a prompt and courteous manner, identifying self and unit
11. Participates in various activities (i.e., staff meetings, in services, health screens, etc.) and keeps current in all communications (e.g., reading circulated material, staff meetings, mailboxes, e-mail and procedures) incorporating new information into routine use.
12. Effectively communicates in a timely manner any unusual supply usage or critical supply level to the supervisor to expedite ordering of required supplies for the continual needs of patients.
13. Refers to supervisor or nursing staff as appropriate any technical problems or unusual patient occurrences.
14. Contacts nursing staff and/or ordering provider promptly for clarification of unclear or incomplete test requisitions/orders; requesting new requisitions/orders in accordance with established laboratory policies.
15. Notifies patient care units promptly of uncollected patient specimens in order to expedite accurate test results in a timely manner.
16. Communicates all appropriate information to patients and/or the public necessary for their understanding of the procedure before, during and after designated procedure.
17. Performs basic clerical duties to help assure efficient running of the laboratory in support of the hospital's missions.
18. Promptly and accurately completes computer entry of all requested laboratory tests, accepting only patient specimens that are properly labeled and requisitions that are properly completed, in accordance with established laboratory policies.
19. Assists hospital personnel in obtaining laboratory results and/or referring such personnel to the appropriate area or laboratory.
20. Contacts patient care units promptly for resubmission of improperly labeled specimens and/or improperly completed requisitions, in order to expedite accurate testing in a timely manner.
21. Participates in educational endeavors of the institution to meet the current and future needs of the phlebotomy service, laboratory, hospital, and the university in support of the hospital's mission of patient care, teaching, and research.
22. Participates, as required, in the instruction, supervision, and evaluation of residents and students of the School of Medicine and other healthcare professionals as established by laboratory policies (eg. Laboratory objectives, evaluation forms).
23. Participates in the ongoing continuing education by attending in services and impromptu consultations, as dictated by their needs and the needs of the laboratory.
24. Participates, as required, in the training, supervision and evaluation of new employees, as established by laboratory policies (e.g., section training checklist).

3. Calculates and collects patient liability according to verification of insurance benefits and expected reimbursement. Explains and provides financial policies and available resources for alternative payment arrangements to patients and their families.
4. Enters payments/charges for services rendered and performs daily payment/charge reconciliation in a timely and accurate manner. Balances cash drawer at the beginning and end of the day and prepares daily bank deposit with necessary paperwork sent to centralized billing for record purposes.
5. Schedules office visits and procedures within the medical practice(s) and external practices as necessary. Maximizes reimbursement by scheduling patients in accordance with payor plan provisions. Confirms patient appointments for the following day as necessary and ensures patients are properly prepared for visits.
6. Demonstrates proactive interpersonal communications skills while dealing with patient concerns through telephone calls, emails and in-person conversations. Optimizes patient flow by using effective customer service/communication skills by communicating to internal and external customers, care team, management, centralized services and HIMS.
7. Assists in responding to requests for patient medical records according to company policies and procedures, and state and federal laws.
8. Provides a variety of patient services to assist in patient flow including but not limited to escorting patients, taking vitals and patient history, assisting in patient treatment, distributing mail and fax information, ordering supplies, etc.
9. Works independently under regular supervision and follows structured work routines. The 8th floor Med/Surg specializes in caring for a variety of both medical and surgical patients. We provide inpatient care to patients with multiple diagnoses including sepsis, diabetes, electrolyte imbalances, gastrointestinal, respiratory, cardiac-tele monitored, infectious, kidney, and liver diseases. We also offer surgical care for pre/ post orthopedic surgeries, general surgeries such as bowel resections/ ostomies, pre/post laparoscopic procedure, bladder surgeries, and plastics. First-line contact for physicians and staff needing information or support regarding the daily operations of the practice. QUALITY/SAFETY ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Ensures a safe and effective working environment; monitors and/or revises the department safety plan and/or any specific accreditation/regulatory required safety guidelines, including infection control principles. Monitors and confirms staff maintain their required credentials that demonstrate competency per accrediting agency or department guidelines as applicable.
- Uses and optimizes information systems to enhance operations; supports entity-specific performance improvement and data management/analysis functions.
- Employs a proactive approach in the optimization of safe outcomes by monitoring and improving the department workflow, using peer-to-peer accountability, reporting near misses and/or adverse events immediately and identifying solutions via collaboration. - Monitors self and employee compliance with policies, procedures, and System HR Standards of Practice and performs associated actions upon non-compliance (i.e., focal point review requirements, disaster plan, inservices, influenza immunization, wage and hour, standard hours, timely termination submission, timely timecard approval, etc.).
- Monitors and analyzes the performance of the practice through verification and analysis of customer satisfaction systems, financial reports, and trends. Formulates an action plan to correct deviations to business plan and budget.
- Monitors key clinical operational indicators including quality metrics such as in basket utilization, clinical close rate, etc. Assesses current performance and develops action plans to achieve optimal performance.
FINANCE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Assists in the development of department budget and ensures that the department operates in a cost effective manner. Manages/audits department expenses within approved budget parameters, ensuring that the department meets the budgeted/flex revenue and/or expense targets on a monthly and annual basis. Develops staffing plans and schedules to meet department/patient care needs that reflect understanding of the importance of cost-effectiveness.
- Implements department strategies to achieve financial target and staffing needs, developing others to do the same, through optimizing productivity, supply/resource efficiency, minimizing incidental overtime and overtime percentage, and other areas according to department specifications.
- Utilizes monitoring and trending data to provide appropriate cost-effective patient care which is in concert with the philosophy of the Houston Methodist. Assures encounters are reviewed, claims created and manages workflow dashboards.
- Monitors charge capture patient encounters and co-payment collections to ensure that appropriate procedures are adhered to and that accurate information is being collected and submitted. Manages petty cash batches and deposits. Reconciles cash daily and keeps appropriate documentation and/or log.
- Assures accurate timekeeping and payroll for all department employees. Identifies and reduces incidental overtime. Manages all reporting and record-keeping functions within their span of control.
GROWTH/INNOVATION ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Identifies and implements innovative solutions for practice or workflow changes to improve department operations or other department-specific measures by leading unit projects and/or other department/system directed shared governance activities. Supports change initiatives, maintaining effectiveness when experiencing major changes in work responsibilities or environment; adjusts effectively to work within new work structures, processes, requirements or cultures.
- Proactively evaluates processes; recommends and implements action plan(s) for change; follows through to ensure effective, sustainable change. Participates in the development and implementation of new procedures and the review and revision of existing procedures.
- Identifies opportunities and takes action to build strategic relationships between one’s area and other areas, teams, departments, and units to achieve business goals.

While working in the Inpatient Anesthesia Department, you will expand your skillset by working on a wide variety of cases, including but not limited to: Orthopedic, Vascular, Burns, Cardiothoracic (specific team), Neurology, ENT, General/Abdominal, Robotic, Gynecology. Other cases you may experience, outside of the day-to-day, include: EP, IR, MRI, Burn Tank, Brachytherapy, and Transesophageal Echocardiography (TEE).
What You’ll Do:
As a valued member of our healthcare team, the CRNA will play a key role in team-focused patient care, providing anesthesia using safe and quality techniques during Inpatient Procedures. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Potential for and encouraged to precept Student Nurse Anesthetists – opportunity to mentor and assess these medical students. Uses medical decision-making skills to determine appropriate patient care plan to ensure peri-operative and anesthesia care, being sensitive to co-morbidities and age & developmental guidelines. Collaborates with medical team when needed for effective team-based care; Uphold patient safety, drive quality improvement, and promote infection prevention within job responsibilities and initiatives. Document and maintain patient records in compliance with hospital standards, ensuring confidentiality. Maintain scheduling flexibility, readiness, and punctuality to deliver timely patient care.
