CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The statements described here are intended to describe the general nature of work being performed by people assigned to this position. They are not intended to be constructed as an all-inclusive list of all responsibilities and duties. Other duties may be assigned.
1. Keeps detailed records of all tests performed, verify physician orders by reviewing charts and notify patient and physician of any tests requiring recollection.
2. Sorts reports by physician, and fax or mail the reports to all persons authorized to receive such information. Documents all actions with the time, fax number and confirmation verification for all reports faxed. Sends a copy of Pathology and Reference Lab reports to medical records and to physicians.
3. Follows-up on any outstanding Pathology or Reference Lab test to verify if testing has been completed and if so, request that a report be sent.
4. Files all work done in the laboratory -- Pathology and Reference Lab reports.
5. Cares for and maintain supplies, equipment and work area. Requisition supplies and equipment. Alerts supervisor to defective equipment and supplies.
6. Collects blood and urine samples from patients as directed. Properly identify all patients and specimens through the use of two, unique patient identifiers and non-passive, verbal verification by patient, when possible.
7. Verifies physician orders before collection of specimens to avoid duplicate venipunctures.
8. Provides appropriate care utilizing knowledge and skill according to the age of the patient -- neonate, pediatric, adolescent, geriatric.
9. Assesses data reflective of the patient’s status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient’s requirements relative to age specific needs. Provides the care needed as described in the department’s policies and procedures.
10. Assists in the care of patient prior to, during, and after collection.
11. Performs courier duties for on-campus physicians.
12. Collects specimens at health fairs, nursing homes, and outreach services.

9. Assists Patient Access and Care Management with denials investigation and resolution.
10. Participates in educational programs to meet mandatory requirements and identified needs with regard to job and personal growth.
11. Attends department meetings, teleconferences and webcasts as necessary.
12. Researches and processes mail returns and claims rejected by the payer.
13. Reconciles billing account transactions to ensure accurate account information according to established procedures.
14. Processes billing and follow-up transactions in an accurate and timely manner.
15. Develops and maintains working knowledge of all federal, state and local regulations pertaining to hospital billing.
16. Monitors accounts to facilitate timely follow-up and payment to maximize cash receipts.
17. Maintains work queue volumes and productivity within established guidelines.
18. Provides excellent customer service to patients, visitors and employees.
19. Participates in performance improvement initiatives as requested.
20. Works with supervisor and manager to develop and exceed annual goals.
21. Maintains confidentiality according to policy when interacting with patients, physicians, families, co-workers and the public regarding demographic/clinical/financial information.

A Forensic Nurse (or SANE Nurse) is a registered nurse who is specially-trained to provide care for victims of sexual assault. The SANE documents the patient’s account of the assault, performs necessary medical exams and collects forensic samples that may be used in prosecution of the crime.SANEs are trained in both the physical and emotional aspects of caring for victims of sexual assault. SANEs collaborate with advocates from the local rape crisis centers who are available to provide resources and support to victims.
