Position Summary
The Speech Pathologist is an exciting opportunity at MultiCare, providing clinical services and communication with patients, families, and other professionals/service providers in the medical community. This professional position will allow you to apply your extensive knowledge and expertise in of speech pathology with all of your patients.
Responsibilities:
- You will provide assessment, interpretation, and reporting of clinical observations
- You will perform patient assessments with physician and develop treatment plans
- You will perform and interpret results of Videofluoroscpic swallow studies and fiberoptic endoscopic of swallowing
- You will confer with physician and other health care professionals
Requirements:
- Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech Pathology (CCC-SLP) from the American Speech-Hearing-Language Association OR be in the process of completing a Clinical Fellowship Year (CFY) with supervision by a CCC-SLP in accordance with standards defined by the ASHA
- Licensed as a Speech Language Pathologist in the State of Washington or holding an interim permit
- Current BLS Certification required
- Previous Experience as a Speech Language Pathologist preferred

Pay and Benefit Expectations
We provide a comprehensive benefits package, including competitive salary, medical, dental and retirement benefits and paid time off. As required by various pay transparency laws, we share a competitive range of compensation for candidates hired into each position. The pay scale is $49.36 - $78.25 USD. However, pay is influenced by factors specific to applicants, including but not limited to: skill set, level of experience, and certification(s) and/or education. As a Speech Language Pathologist, you will independently evaluate, diagnose, and treat patients with speech, language, cognitive, voice, swallowing, and fluency disorders across a variety of clinical settings. You will maintain compliance with all applicable local, state, and federal regulations, as well as organizational policies and standards, ensuring the highest levels of patient safety, privacy, and quality of care. Additionally, you will support the professional development of future clinicians by providing clinical supervision to speech-language pathology assistants and aides and serving as a clinical instructor for students as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
- Current RN or Clinical Therapy License in the State of Michigan
- Bachelor’s degree in nursing or therapy field required, Master's degree encouraged, (or if therapy, degree required from discipline)

POSITION SUMMARY
This position provides screening, evaluation, and rehabilitation services for patients with speech and language disorders related to speech, language, cognitive-communication, voice, swallowing, and fluency. This position plans and carries out specialized treatment programs, documents treatment, and maintains data regarding patient care. This position demonstrates the clinical competence and knowledge necessary to provide treatment appropriate to the age of the patients served.
CORE FUNCTIONS
1. Evaluates patients’ functional abilities and limitations to determine appropriate intervention. Develops a plan of care and treatment goals, as ordered by physician or other referral source.

Minimum Qualifications:
Education: Graduate degree in Speech/Language Pathology from an accredited university-based Speech/Language Pathology program.
Licenses/Certifications: Current license to practice speech/language pathology by the State Board of Examiners for Speech Pathology and Audiology for Texas. Current certification from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. Current certification in Basic Life Support.
Experience / Knowledge / Skills:
- Must have at least two (2) years experience.
- The position requires occasional lifting and carrying of up to 30 pounds; prolonged standing; frequent walking, stooping and squatting. Fine hand dexterity, eye-hand coordination, the ability to receive oral and written communication, and to communicate verbally and in writing are also necessary. The visual ability to monitor instruments, computers and equipment, recognize alphanumeric characters, distinguish colors and observe physical characteristics are essential to this position.
Principal Accountabilities:
- Assumes responsibility in the care of the patient. Performs complete, comprehensive evaluation of patients with a physician’s referral. Accurately interprets evaluation findings. Completes a written plan of care, develops goals based on evaluation findings, and develops a comprehensive program to attain goals.
- Implements a speech/language pathology treatment program. Re-assess patient status and alters treatment goals, plan, and program as needed. Motivates and instructs patient/caregivers using appropriate methods.
- Communicates effectively with staff, patients/caregivers and professional colleagues to include physicians and insurance companies.
- Manages time effectively.
- Documents appropriately in the medical record and completes other documentation duties accurately and efficiently.
- Serve as a clinical resource, mentor, and clinical instructor to staff, students, hospital, schools and/or the community in general.
- Actively pursues clinical expertise in specific treatment techniques or management of a particular patient population.
- Actively participates in organized system/facility/departmental committees and taskforces.
- Presents relevant special topics in professional literature at clinic meetings, grand rounds, conferences, university settings and meetings as delegated or requested by the faculty.

- Provides education to patients, patient’s family members, and/or caregivers, based on learning needs. Consistently evaluates the patient’s comprehension and adapts teaching methods accordingly. Serves as resource to clinical fellows and nursing in teaching best practices.
- Collaborates and communicates with the healthcare team modifications to patient’s treatment plan, progress, and discharge planning for achievement of identified patient specific goals. Advocates on patient/family’s behalf to identify and resolve clinical and ethical concerns, utilizing appropriate resources.
- Balances and adjusts as needed the caseload for the assigned team members to result in optimum patient care and outcome. Initiates improvements for department score on patient satisfaction, through peer-to-peer accountability to service standards.

Interprets physician referrals and conducts a speech and language evaluation of patients with various speech, language, voice, cognitive and swallowing disorders.
Establishes a written plan of care and implements individual treatment based on evaluation results, functional goals and by utilizing appropriate techniques. Monitors and evaluates outcomes and appropriately adjusts the individualized treatment plan based on the patient's response to treatment and provides status updates to physicians and other teammates. Identifies factors affecting patient's physical and psychosocial comfort and attends to these needs.
Plans for and completes patient discharge including providing written home programs, patient/family teaching, referral for community services, transition planning within the continuum of care and ordering equipment as indicated/appropriate. Communicates and collaborates with appropriate stakeholders to assist in achieving optimum care for the patient.
Completes all required documentation following department policy and accreditation standards with appropriate co- signatures, including patient evaluations, progress notes, team conference reports, and discharge summaries as appropriate. Record patient care and progress of each patient assigned. Completes daily statistics, billing, and scheduling. Applies insurance guidelines regarding authorization and number of visits. Responsible for maintaining site/department established productivity standards. Responsible for understanding and adhering to all billing and documentation policies, procedures, and timelines.
Responsible for cleaning up after patient treatment, putting away equipment, and keeping area neat and orderly. Performs various manual techniques, patient positioning and transporting duties, which require lifting and pushing/pulling, while utilizing proper technique. Demonstrates skill in use of modalities, exercise equipment and other devices that are available in area worked per department orientation checklist. Demonstrates knowledge of indications and contraindications of modalities. Promotes patient safety by participating in safety initiatives as requested and appropriately follows all safety and infection control measures pertaining to the general working environment.
Participates in performance improvement activities designed to identify and resolve problems affecting patient care outcomes and to improve quality of care. Manages assigned caseload, informing site leadership of coverage needs and ability to cover; assists with coverage, based on department needs and regional needs.
Pursues professional growth through participation in continuing education courses, department in-services, and reading professional literature. May supervise non-licensed personnel following all applicable state and local compliance requirements. Includes delegating patients to assistive personnel while providing direction, recommendations regarding treatment and ongoing supervision while maintaining responsibility for patient plan of care and goals. Supports the student clinical education program by monitoring, observing, and providing work direction to a minimum of one student per year unless students are unavailable.

Job Description
Minimum Qualifications:
Education: Graduate degree in Speech/Language Pathology from an accredited university-based Speech/Language Pathology program.
Licenses/Certifications: Current license to practice Speech/Language Pathology by the State Board of Examiners for Speech Pathology and Audiology for Texas. Current certification from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. Current certification in Basic Life Support.
Experience / Knowledge / Skills:
Must have at least two (2) years experience.
The position requires occasional lifting and carrying of up to 30 pounds; prolonged standing; frequent walking, stooping and squatting. Fine hand dexterity, eye-hand coordination, the ability to receive oral and written communication, and to communicate verbally and in writing are also necessary. The visual ability to monitor instruments, computers and equipment, recognize alphanumeric characters, distinguish colors and observe physical characteristics are essential to this position.

Assumes responsibility in the care of the patient. Performs complete, comprehensive evaluation of patients with a physician’s referral. Accurately interprets evaluation findings. Completes a written plan of care, develops goals based on evaluation findings, and develops a comprehensive program to attain goals.

Actively participates in organized system/facility/departmental committees and taskforces.
