SUMMARY
The Rehabilitation Aide reports directly to the Clinical Manager/Assistant Clinical Manager and performs duties under the supervision of Rehabilitation professionals. The Rehabilitation Aide assists clinicians in providing treatments designed to relieve pain and maximize function of patients across Brown University Health. The Rehabilitation Aide transports patients, maintains supply inventory, and prepares and cleans treatment areas. Provides office and systems support at all Rehabilitation Service locations for Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and Speech Language Pathology/Audiology.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Principal Duties
Once deemed competent, and in accordance with the established treatment plan, the Rehabilitation Aide:
- Assists therapists and assistants in patient care as requested.
- Carries out patient intervention per therapist or assistant direction, including positioning, mobilizing, and exercising patients.
The supervising Physical Therapist, Occupational Therapist, Speech-Language Pathologist, or Audiologist will be present on the premises and immediately available to the Rehabilitation Aide when providing treatment. A Physical Therapist Assistant or Occupational Therapy Assistant may also provide supervision but must be on the premises, in line of sight, and immediately available.
Additional Duties
- Maintains gym and all treatment areas to Environment of Care (EOC) standards.
- Assists with EOC safety rounds.
- Enters work orders as applicable to gym and treatment areas.
- Maintains cleanliness of department equipment per infection control policies and equipment guidelines.
- Maintains equipment logs.
- Ensures that rehabilitation equipment, including but not limited to wheelchairs, walkers, and crutches, is clean and functional.
- Cleans and prepares treatment areas between patient use.
- Maintains and inventories therapeutic supplies, equipment, linen, and housekeeping supplies.
- Transports patients to and from treatment areas, exercising care in the handling of patients.
- May assist with scheduling, order entry, charge reconciliation, and scanning into the Electronic Health Record.
- Communicates in person or by fax/phone with patients, providers, healthcare team members, referral sources, and payers.
- Assists with departmental statistics and quality assurance, program evaluation, and environmental and infection control activities.
- Participates in meetings as required.
- Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Basic Knowledge
- Interpersonal skills necessary to work effectively with patients and other members of the healthcare team.
- Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to assist with providing care to patients throughout Brown University Health, with consideration of the aging process, human development stages, and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.
- Effective verbal and non-verbal communication skills.
- Proficient using Microsoft Excel and Word software programs.
Experience
- High School graduate or GED required.
- Associate's degree preferred.
- One year of related experience in fitness training or direct patient care, such as a Rehabilitation Aide or CNA position, required.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements
- Physical ability to lift, position, and transport patients.
- Considerable reaching, stooping, bending, crouching, and kneeling.
- Frequent walking, standing, and lifting of equipment and patients.
- Some exposure to communicable diseases and cleaning agents/chemicals.
- Moderate physical effort (lift and carry up to 25-35 lbs.).
Independent Action
- Performs independently within department policies and practices. Refers specific complex problems to supervisor where clarification of departmental policies and procedures may be required.
Supervisory Responsibility
- May direct volunteers/interns to assist with tasks related to environment of care.

Summary:
Determines and verifies insurance coverage and coordination of insurance benefits from all sources. Requests and/or verifies authorizations for ordered services. Schedule and/or reschedule physician orders for outpatient treatments and/or diagnostic services. Discuss financial responsibilities for upcoming appointments with patient and/or guarantor. Collect upfront payments and/or review for financial assistance. Handles inbound and/or outbound calls related to the above functions.
Responsibilities:
Communicates with patients and practitioners regarding order, insurance and/or authorization issues.Inputs and/or reviews insurance benefits for the patient account. Re-runs estimates when needed to correct expected patient out of pocket liability for that service.Reviews order for appropriate authorizing signature and accuracy of scheduled service(s).Handles inbound and/or outbound calls to perform all pre-service functions included but not limited to scheduling, authorizations, benefits, and patient responsibilities. Documents appropriate record with the details of the call and the call disposition.Confirms insurance coverage. Determines necessity for pre-authorization and obtains authorization for that service(s). Documents authorization information within the patient account.Notifies patient of their financial responsibility for services to be provided. Educates guarantor about their out of pocket responsibility for the service and collects pre-service payments in accordance with available financial options. Ensures compliance with departmental procedures for payment. Document details of the call and notate any collections that need to be performed at time of registration.Updates patient insurance information into the patient record as needed to ensure correct billing and net revenue estimation occurs.

Major Responsibilities:
- Prepares and rooms the patient for exam by obtaining vital signs and gathering/documenting/updating pertinent health information (i.e., chief complaint, allergies, and/or medications). Monitors and completes Clinical Integration/ Quality Improvement measures with notification to clinician for opportunities within their scope.
- Performs laboratory procedures (i.e., strep test, wound culture, specimen collection, etc.) using principles of aseptic technique and standard precautions/infection control guidelines.
- Assists the Physician/ Advanced Practice Professional (APP) with procedures  such as pelvic exams, allergy scratch testing, EMG, cautery, colposcopy, etc.
- Administers routine medications, under Physician/ APP orders or medical group approved standing orders/protocols, which may include but are not limited to immunizations, antibiotics, vitamins, and topical agents.
- Follows through with necessary procedure or test requests, pre-approved care algorithms, new appointment times and referrals to other facilities or services. Refers questions to Registered Nurses and Physician/APC per scope of practice guidelines and relays information back to patient as directed.

Major Responsibilities:
- Prepares and rooms the patient for exam by obtaining vital signs and documenting/updating pertinent health information (i.e. chief complaint, allergies, medications).
- Performs laboratory procedures (i.e. strep test, wound culture, specimen collection, etc.) using principles of aseptic technique and standard precautions / infection control guidelines.
- Assists the physician/provider with procedures and surgeries such as pelvic exams, allergy scratch testing, EMG, cautery, colposcopy, etc.
- Administers medications, under physician/provider orders, including: immunizations, antibiotics, pain medications, vitamins, topical agents, and insulin. With limitations, initiates, maintains and discontinues IV therapy; administering selected fluids with pre-mixed medications.
- Provides basic patient education on the performance of tasks, skills, treatment and self-care.
- Follows through with necessary procedure or test requests, prescription refills, new appointment times and referrals to other facilities or services.
- Refers questions to registered nurses and physicians/providers per scope of practice guidelines and relays information back to patient as directed.
- Communicates with physicians and other members of the health care team. Documents and communicates accurate and timely information regarding patient conditions.
- Performs advanced clinical tasks or skills such as removal of sutures and staples, catheterization, audiograms, laboratory procedures (throat/nose culture, drug screen, phlebotomy - butterfly, venous access, heel stick), EKG, spirometry, Holter monitor application, casting, complex wound care, etc., with demonstrated competency and under clinical supervision.
- Organizes and prepares exam rooms, lab and work areas including: cleaning, stocking, ordering supplies, and maintaining equipment. Performs various patient positioning and transporting duties, which require lifting and pushing/pulling, while utilizing proper technique.
- Completes routine maintenance and quality monitoring of clinic equipment using appropriate technique when cleaning, sterilizing and caring for instruments and other equipment.
- Participates in patient centered initiatives, care management, performance and quality improvement activities.
- Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served.
- Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the department's policies and procedures. Summary:

Other Information: Department specific credentials - See below-ONCC Chemotherapy and Biotherapy Provider Certificate Required for those RNs administering chemotherapy. APHON Chemotherapy and Biotherapy Provider card required within 12 months of hire for those RNs administering chemotherapy for oncologic indication within the pediatric setting. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) required for ICU, ED, PACU, Endo, Tele, OB, MHN Pre-Op and Specialty Procedural areas. PALS required for Pediatric areas with the exception of NICU.- if RN is coming from a non-pediatric background, they have 30 days from date of hire to obtain PALS.NRP certification required for NICU – if RN is coming from a non NICU background, they have 30 days from date of hire to obtain NRP. Certification in Fetal Monitoring through National Credential Center or through AWOHNN (Intermediate or Advanced) for L&D RNs must be completed prior to completion of job orientation.
