Position Summary
The Speech Pathologist is an exciting opportunity at MultiCare, providing clinical services and communication with patients, families, and other professionals/service providers in the medical community. This professional position will allow you to apply your extensive knowledge and expertise in of speech pathology with all of your patients.
Responsibilities
- You will provide assessment, interpretation, and reporting of clinical observations
- You will perform patient assessments with physician and develop treatment plans
- You will perform and interpret results of Videofluoroscpic swallow studies and fiberoptic endoscopic of swallowing
- You will confer with physician and other health care professionals
Requirements
- Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech Pathology (CCC-SLP) from the American Speech-Hearing-Language Association OR be in the process of completing a Clinical Fellowship Year (CFY) with supervision by a CCC-SLP in accordance with standards defined by the ASHA
- Licensed as a Speech Language Pathologist in the State of Washington or holding an interim permit
- Current BLS Certification required
- Previous Experience as a Speech Language Pathologist preferred

Pay and Benefit Expectations
We provide a comprehensive benefits package, including competitive salary, medical, dental and retirement benefits and paid time off. As required by various pay transparency laws, we share a competitive range of compensation for candidates hired into each position. The pay scale is $47.46 - $75.24 USD. However, pay is influenced by factors specific to applicants, including but not limited to: skill set, level of experience, and certification(s) and/or education. $38.20 - $57.30Major Responsibilities:
Interprets physician referrals and conducts a speech and language evaluation of patients with various speech, language, voice, cognitive and swallowing disorders.
Establishes a written plan of care and implements individual treatment based on evaluation results, functional goals and by utilizing appropriate techniques. Monitors and evaluates outcomes and appropriately adjusts the individualized treatment plan based on the patient's response to treatment and provides status updates to physicians and other teammates. Identifies factors affecting patient's physical and psychosocial comfort and attends to these needs.
Plans for and completes patient discharge including providing written home programs, patient/family teaching, referral for community services, transition planning within the continuum of care and ordering equipment as indicated/appropriate. Communicates and collaborates with appropriate stakeholders to assist in achieving optimum care for the patient.
Completes all required documentation following department policy and accreditation standards with appropriate co- signatures, including patient evaluations, progress notes, team conference reports, and discharge summaries as appropriate. Record patient care and progress of each patient assigned. Completes daily statistics, billing, and scheduling. Applies insurance guidelines regarding authorization and number of visits. Responsible for maintaining site/department established productivity standards. Responsible for understanding and adhering to all billing and documentation policies, procedures, and timelines.
Responsible for cleaning up after patient treatment, putting away equipment, and keeping area neat and orderly. Performs various manual techniques, patient positioning and transporting duties, which require lifting and pushing/pulling, while utilizing proper technique. Demonstrates skill in use of modalities, exercise equipment and other devices that are available in area worked per department orientation checklist. Demonstrates knowledge of indications and contraindications of modalities. Promotes patient safety by participating in safety initiatives as requested and appropriately follows all safety and infection control measures pertaining to the general working environment.
Participates in performance improvement activities designed to identify and resolve problems affecting patient care outcomes and to improve quality of care. Manages assigned caseload, informing site leadership of coverage needs and ability to cover; assists with coverage, based on department needs and regional needs.
Pursues professional growth through participation in continuing education courses, department in-services, and reading professional literature. Orients new staff to clinical and department policies as requested. Participates in the evaluation process of co-workers by providing verbal or written feedback as requested.
May supervise non-licensed personnel following all applicable state and local compliance requirements. Includes delegating patients to assistive personnel while providing direction, recommendations regarding treatment and ongoing supervision while maintaining responsibility for patient plan of care and goals. Supports the student clinical education program by monitoring, observing, and providing work direction to a minimum of one student per year unless students are unavailable.
Minimum Job Requirements
Education
Master’s degree in Speech Pathology from an accredited school or educational requirements commensurate with the date of graduation; maintains continuing education requirements as mandated by applicable state professional standards.
Certification / Registration / License
Speech Language Pathologist license issued by the state in which the teammate practices. If the teammate supports multiple states, licensure in at least one of those states is required prior to hire.
Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers (obtained within 90 days unless department leader has determined is not required) American Heart Association.
Work Experience
CCC SLP required. Previous Clinical SLP Experience preferred.

Successfully completes all competency assessments/requirements pertaining to provision of patient care and consistent with site standards.

Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served. Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
Must be able to sit, stand, walk, lift, and squat throughout the workday
Must be able to:
lift up to 50 lbs. from floor to waist.
lift up to 10 lbs. from waist to overhead.
lift and carry up to 40 lbs. at waist height a reasonable distance
Must be able to:
push/pull with 30 lbs. of force.
perform a sliding transfer of 150 lbs. with a second person present
Position requires repetitive use of hands:
Simple grasping - 5-15 lbs. - 20% of the workday.
Pushing/pulling - up to 75-100 lbs. - 10% of the day
Fine manipulation of hands during massage and joint mobilization
Must have functional use of senses to allow for effective communication
Exposed to electrical and chemical hazards as well as blood and body fluids; therefore, must have ability to wear protective clothing as needed
Position may require travel; therefore, may be exposed to road and weather hazards
Operates all equipment necessary to perform the job

Plans for and completes patient discharge including providing written home programs, patient/family teaching, referral for community services, transition planning within the continuum of care and ordering equipment as indicated/appropriate. Completes all required documentation following department policy and accreditation standards with appropriate co- signatures, including patient evaluations, progress notes, team conference reports, and discharge summaries as appropriate. Position Summary and Purpose
The therapist is responsible for the evaluation and treatment of patients referred to the facility. Essential Functions
- Directs and supervises activities of rehab technicians, speech-language pathology students and volunteers involved in administering care to patients and assists with orienting new and rotating staff.
- Evaluates patients and establishes appropriate patient care plan to include necessary modalities, procedures, exercise programs, and patient education as warranted by the patient's diagnosis and condition.
- Gathers and interprets appropriate data from the medical record, physician reports, patient, and/or family as evidenced by documentation and identifies need for and utilizes appropriate assistive devices.

POSITION SUMMARY
This position is responsible for the evaluation, planning, administration and supervision of Physical Therapy treatment in accordance with physician referral, state and national organizational standards, regulatory agencies, and established departmental policies and procedures. Job Description:
Provides a full range of differential diagnostic and therapeutic services to patients referred by a physician. Performs specialized tests and treatments as well as teaching procedures to the patient, family and other health personnel.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: Master's degree in Speech-Language Pathology from an accredited program. Minimum one year post Clinical Fellowship Year (CFY) clinical experience, two years preferred.
LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION, and/or REGISTRATION: Current license in Speech-Language Pathology issued by the applicable state Board of Examiners for Speech and Language Pathologists and Audiologists. 1. Performs comprehensive professional evaluation of patients of all ages referred for differential diagnosis of communicative or swallowing disorders. Selects and administers evaluation instruments that are appropriate for the patient's age, developmental level, cognitive function, and reason for referral.
2. Ensures patient and/or family education regarding communication or swallowing deficits and treatment options. Provides counseling to patient and extended family relative to recommendations and treatment options.
3. Plans and conducts treatment programs for patients with speech, language, voice and/or swallowing impairments. Develops individual short term and long-term treatment goals. Implements plans to achieve treatment goals, modifying therapy strategies as necessary to maximize progress.
4. Provides and participates in in-service education and training of speech pathology interns and fellows, medical students/residents, and allied medical personnel. Prepares and presents formal lectures to physicians, nurses, educators, and others on communication and/or swallowing disorders. Provides unique training for speech pathology graduate interns who are assigned to the department for clinical practicum training. Participates in in-service education programs to ensure proficiency and skills in current techniques for the evaluation and treatment of patients.
5. Continuously seeks to improve patient care services and evaluates opportunities to develop new services. Coordinates and prioritizes the patient caseload to ensure that all patient services are rendered efficiently to minimize delays in diagnosis or therapeutic intervention. Provides patient services in a manner which maximizes efficiency, efficacy, and quality without need for continuous supervision.
6. Evaluates options for augmentative/alternative communication and recommends and/or fits appropriate devices or prostheses to meet patient needs, as applicable.
7. Ensures that age/developmentally appropriate patient care is provided in accordance with Age-Specific Care Guidelines for the specific age groups served.

Speech Language Pathologists coordinate, delegate and supervise responsibilities assigned to support staff (OT /PT Aide, etc.) The Speech Language Pathologist participates in operational aspects of the department, contributing to performance improvement and CQI activities. Speech Language Pathologists participate in all infection control, departmental equipment training, organizational safety and fire safety programs.

- Uses therapeutic communication, which includes active listening and teaching, to establish a relationship with patients, families and interprofessional health care team to collaborate on the plan of care. Partners with members of the interprofessional care team by actively communicating and reporting pertinent patient care information and data in a comprehensive manner.
- Teaches and provides guidance to nursing, and support staff. Orients new team members and assists with precepting students in clinical rotations and clinical fellows. Uses peer-to-peer accountability towards improvement of department score for employee engagement.
SERVICE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Performs complete and comprehensive evaluation of patients across a broad range of diagnosis and acuities to identify patient’s level of function and to determine the treatment plan. Develops the plan of care based on evaluation findings and implements the physical therapy treatment plan. Provides service to complex patient populations.
- Provides education to patients, patient’s family members, and/or caregivers, based on learning needs. Consistently evaluates the patient’s comprehension and adapts teaching methods accordingly. Serves as resource to clinical fellows and nursing in teaching best practices.
- Collaborates and communicates with the healthcare team modifications to patient’s treatment plan, progress, and discharge planning for achievement of identified patient specific goals. Advocates on patient/family’s behalf to identify and resolve clinical and ethical concerns, utilizing appropriate resources.
- Balances and adjusts as needed the caseload for the assigned team members to result in optimum patient care and outcome. Initiates improvements for department score on patient satisfaction, through peer-to-peer accountability to service standards.
QUALITY/SAFETY ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Assesses patients regularly, monitors progress towards treatment goals, modifies goals, and plan or program as indicated. Recognizes complications/limitations associated with certain procedures and proactively addresses such for optimum outcomes.
- Provides oversight of speech-related activities completed by interprofessional health care team, and if necessary, adjusts the plan to improve quality of outcome and maintain the safety of the patient.
- Proactively identifies opportunities for corrective action and assists in process improvement by providing recommendations and contributes to meeting department and hospital targets for quality and safety. Identifies areas of practice improvements with research-based evidence and assists in development of treatment protocols and best practice for certain population or practice area to achieve patient safety outcomes, supported by accurate documentation.
FINANCE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Maintains accurate and complete documentation of patient education and procedures performed in a timely manner in the patient record. Enters accurate charges for services provided as applicable.
- Uses resources efficiently to maximize utilization of time and equipment. Self-motivated to independently manage time effectively and prioritize daily tasks, assisting coworkers as needed. Meets labor productivity standards by effectively managing established patient load assignments.
GROWTH/INNOVATION ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Initiates innovative solutions through evidence-based practice/performance improvement projects. Actively participates in and may lead department projects and/or hospital committees. Participates in HM-related and approved hospital/community teaching opportunities, community services and/or functions.
- Identifies and presents areas for innovation, efficiency and improvement in patient care or unit operations using evidence-based practice literature. Assists higher level SLPs with program development and/or clinical competencies
- Seeks opportunities to identify self-development needs and expand learning beyond baseline competencies with a focus on continual development as a Speech Language Pathologist, taking appropriate action. Ensures own career discussions occur with appropriate management. Completes and updates the My Development Plan on an on-going basis.
