Your Job:
The Pharmacy Technician will assist in performing paraprofessional tasks that will ensure a high quality of pharmacy service.
Supports the mission, vision, values and strategic goals of Methodist Health System.
Your Job Requirements:
• High School Diploma or Equivalent required
• IV certification preferred
• Registered technician with the Texas State Board of Pharmacy or Pharmacy student current Pharmacy Intern License
• 1 year of Pharmacy experience required
• Hospital Pharmacy experiences preferred
• Computer skills preferred, but not required
• Ability to maintain confidentially and patient privacy standards set by the department as well as hospital
Your Job Responsibilities
• Answers the telephone and front window.
• Compounds products in IV Lab using sterile, aseptic technique
• Gathers items needed for miscellaneous requisitions, orders, crash carts, etc. to be checked by pharmacist prior to dispensing.
• Maintains clean and orderly work area; restocks returned medications, restocks work area to appropriate levels.
• Assists in maintaining inventory levels of pharmaceuticals and supplies by notifying purchasing when items become low or increased usage of particular items in observed: utilized the “short list”.
• Maintains drug storage systems through restock and trouble-shooting functions
• Maintains Unit Inspections outside the department
• Makes scheduled rounds to all nursing units for the delivery of medications and the pick-up of discontinued medications and orders as needed.
• Makes non-scheduled rounds to any nursing unit as required.
• Perform charges and credits for floor stock sheets, narcotic sheets, miscellaneous charge slips, and returned medications into computer system.
• Processes medications in assigned area (OR, IV lab, first fill) in preparation of final dispensing by the pharmacist.
• Trains new employees as assigned.
• Other duties as assigned

This position will work under the supervision of the pharmacist performing routine duties in packaging, distribution, non-sterile compounding, and record-keeping of pharmaceutical supplies. Serves as a liaison between the customer and the pharmacist. Becomes proficient in preparing compounded intravenous medications, total parenteral nutrition products, and chemotherapeutic agents within compliance with USP regulations. Effectively uses pharmacy computer systems to investigate and respond to missing medication requests. Consistently demonstrates an ability to assess a situation, consider alternatives, and choose the appropriate course of action. May educate and train peer Pharmacy Technicians, Technician Externs, Technician Trainees, and volunteers. Must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients.
CORE FUNCTIONS
1. Identifies medications and other items for reorder as necessary to maintain a continuous inventory of medications and supplies. Receives, checks-in, and restocks medications ordered through the wholesaler and other vendors verifying all quantities against invoices. Assesses practical ways to deal with shorted items and short-dated or unusable items.
2. Manages users within the automated dispensing technology database as per policy. Investigates discrepancies and troubleshoots malfunctions in automated dispensing technology.
3. Exhibits excellent interpersonal skills and is customer service oriented in all contacts with patients, visitors and staff. Responds to standard requests from internal customers. Interacts primarily with department personnel, cross-department personnel, internal customers, patients and physicians.
4. May use automated dispensing technology or requisition to restock medications to nursing and ancillary areas after checking by a pharmacist. When allowed by law and policy, and upon completion of proper training/competency assessment, may restock automated dispensing technology using barcode scanning verification devices. Restocks medications to all areas outside automated dispensing technology which may include but not limited to trays, code carts and emergency boxes.
5. Compounds non-sterile medication products. Understands and appropriately follows all product worksheets/recipes for documentation and check processes. Understands and adheres to all applicable USP compounding guidelines. Demonstrates knowledge of and consistently performs calibrations of equipment and accurately measures components for compounding. Repackages bulk medications into unit of use packaging. Completes accurate documentation of medications compounded and repackaged per policy.
6. Maintains a safe and clean working environment by complying with all policies, laws, and regulations. Performs quality control activities such as monthly nursing unit inspections and pharmacy section checks in a timely manner. Completes documentation of refrigerator temperatures, and equipment maintenance activities as required.
7. Handles narcotic medications following all federal and legal requirements as set through policy and procedure. Understands all regulatory requirements for receiving, compounding, repackaging, and distribution for controlled substances. Consistently adheres to all storage and inventory movement documentation requirements for controlled substances.
8. Becomes proficient in performing compounding and labeling of intravenous non-hazardous compounds using proper sterile and aseptic technique as appropriate to the site of care. Understands the different product lines in sterile populations (adult, pediatric, and neonate). Completes all required environmental cleaning procedures. Documents all required tasks and other information per policy.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Requires Pharmacy Technician licensure and active Pharmacy Technician certification OR Pharmacy Intern licensure in the state of practice.
Incumbents in Arizona are also required to provide the AZ Board of Pharmacy Wallet Card at time of hire.
Ability to complete moderate to difficult mathematical calculations using a hand-held calculator is required. Strong customer service focus, exceptional communication skills, strong attention to detail, prioritization capabilities, superior problem-solving skills, and ability to multi-task. Must have knowledge of computer software, particularly medication management information system software, Microsoft applications and automated dispensing systems. RESPONSIBILITIES:
Participates in the Rhode Island Board of Pharmacy (RI BOP) approved Brown University Health Pharmacy Technician Training Program designed to provide theoretical knowledge and practical instruction needed to prepare participants for National Pharmacy Technician Certification (CPhT). Completes all required coursework, exams, and training on time as assigned, while maintaining a passing score.
Coursework and training include a minimum of:
· Didactic coursework 118 hours
· Simulation training 50 hours
· Hands-on training 232 hours
Completes didactic coursework and progresses to simulations, allowing trainees to practice concepts in a non-patient care setting. Upon successful completion of simulations, trainees will demonstrate hands-on application under the supervision of a pharmacist.
Performs only those tasks for which he/she has been trained and in which they have demonstrated proficiency.
Under the supervision of a pharmacist the technician trainee:
Performs general operations related to utilization of the central pharmacy manager (e.g., carousel) for inventory control and distribution of pharmaceuticals and related supplies to automated dispensing cabinets (ADCs) (e.g., Omnicell). Participation includes maintenance, generating and interpreting reports to perform assigning, refilling, and removing medications. Assists in maintaining operating room medication inventory.
Observes and develops an understanding of electronic radio frequency identification (RFID)-enabled inventory management solutions (e.g., Kitcheck).
Observes controlled substances inventory management process in the Pharmacy and throughout the hospital.
Participates in the delivery of medications to patient care areas, clinics, procedural and treatment areas, and operating rooms.
Assists with repackaging and relabeling bulk medications into unit-dose packaging for distribution once approved by a pharmacist, in accordance with existing policies and procedures, and completes accurate documentation for Packaging and Labeling Records.
Aids in the refilling of emergency medication kits for pharmacist review and verification.
Engages in the routine receipt of medications and other pharmaceutical supplies.
Aids in the processing of medication requisitions from departments and laboratories for pharmacist review and verification.
Observes and develops skills to execute the process for reconciliation of patient and department medication charges.
Contributes to routine preventive maintenance to equipment, according to standards for same.
Assists in maintaining the Pharmacy and medication supply areas in a neat and orderly fashion ensuring medications are stored under proper conditions for light, temperature, sanitation, and segregation.
Understands the value of reporting actual, prevented, and near miss medication errors.
Answers the telephone and triages, as appropriate. Demonstrates a strong customer service presence and verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively interact with internal and external customers.
Demonstrates awareness of United States Pharmacopoeia (USP) Chapter <797> Sterile Compounding Guidelines, USP <795> Pharmaceutical Compounding – Nonsterile Preparations, and USP <800> Hazardous Drugs – Handling in Healthcare Settings and National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) guidelines and Brown University Heath policies and standard operating procedures.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Obtain and maintain Pharmacy Technician I licensure in the state of Rhode Island prior to first day of training. Position Purpose
Under the supervision of the Registered Pharmacist, Pharmacy Manager, and Director of Pharmacy, and according to the established procedures of the pharmacy department, the pharmacy technician assists the pharmacists and other pharmacy personnel in all aspects of inpatient hospital pharmacy. This includes but is not limited to the preparation, dispensing, and delivery of medications, performing related duties to maintain workflow such as charging medications, filling Pyxis™ MedStations, crediting and redistributing returns and assisting in the maintenance of inventory levels within the department. In addition to the above, the technician assists the pharmacists and other pharmacy personnel in the preparation, dispensing and delivery of parental solutions for inpatients and outpatients. The Technician will maintain the workflow in the IV room with activities such as delivering the IVs to the nursing units, recycling of IV products, processing IV returns and batching IVs and syringes as backup stock for new orders. The purpose is delivery of quality care commensurate with the age of the patient population for the said designated area. (ie. neonate through geriatrics).

GENERAL SUMMARY AND PURPOSE:
Procures, stores, and distributes pharmaceuticals, diagnostic agents, intravenous solutions and related equipment and supplies for all Saint Joseph Mercy Health System sites. Facilitates the distribution of pharmacy products across all operational units within the SJMHS. Monitors and maintains the pharmacy inventory using accepted industry inventory management techniques, information management systems, and technological enhancements. Responsible for the repackaging of products not commercially available in unit doses or needing a readable bar code. Processes and maintains related documentation as required by licensing, accrediting, and regulatory agencies. This position maintains the hospital formulary in hospital computer systems and bills medications requested by other departments, as necessary. The ILT coordinates the medications and equipment in ALS boxes and represents the hospital at ALS regional meetings.
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Education: High school graduate or GED equivalent
Minimum of one year education in related field, such as general business, computers, or inventory/operations management
Experience: Minimum of 2 years of progressively more responsible work experience as a hospital Pharmacy Technician or related experience including knowledge of the drug distribution process, experienced in drug formulary inventory control and billing processes.
Licensure: Current State of Michigan Pharmacy Technician license

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Places purchase orders, receives pharmacy supplies, confirms product integrity, accuracy and expiration dating according to department standards. Collaborates with suppliers to resolve discrepancies or other problems. Restocks in appropriate storage locations. Responsible for the receipt and restock of medication and supplies. Is responsible for managing various ordering platforms for procuring pharmaceuticals.
- Participates in the establishment of appropriate inventory levels for pharmacy products at all points of service and intermediate storage locations using inventory management techniques. Anticipates and understands the impact of seasonal and/or atypical situations, makes special arrangements to maintain sufficient inventory, and communicates the status to operational staff on a timely basis. Ensures all products are within their expiration date and properly stored in accordance with licensing, regulatory and accrediting requirements.
- Conducts audits on utilization, purchasing and billing activity, investigates discrepancies, prepares reconciliation reports, and implements changes to continuously improve the accuracy, integrity and control of the purchasing functions.
- Collaborates with suppliers, customers and colleagues on an ongoing basis to assess product requirements, storage capabilities, special handling procedures, distribution options, utilization trends, safety and environmental issues, security and financial integrity. Sets priorities, designs procurement and distribution work flow processes, measures outcomes, and makes adjustments as necessary to meet our financial and quality objectives. Assumes responsibility for accurate completion of forms and procedures required to meet state and federal controlled substance regulations.
- Maintains a separate inventory for controlled substances, hazardous chemicals, investigational drugs, expired medications and outpatient oncology. Performs all related documentation and record keeping functions and submits reports as required.
- Ensures the accurate and timely delivery to end user departments of orders for medications, IV solutions and set, and pharmacy related supplies. Develops and implements plans to enhance customer satisfaction of this function. Facilitates the distribution of pharmacy products across all offsite locations within SJMHS (see Policy number #150 ‘Pharmacy Vehicle and Safety Policy”).
- Maintains appropriate stock of medications that have been repackaged and/or bar coded to be useable to the end user. Works in collaboration with the Automation Technician to maintain the software and hardware of pharmacy automation (ex. MedCarousel and Pentapack). Supports the system’s bar-coding initiatives.
- Participates in the training and orientation of new employees.
- Assumes responsibility for performance of job duties in the safest possible manner, to assure personal safety and that of coworkers, and to report all preventable hazards and unsafe practices immediately to management. Identifies and assists in resolution of problems related to safety, sanitation and maintenance of the environment.
