Sentara is hiring a full-time Pharmacy Quality Control Coordinator.
Location: Chesapeake, VA
Travel Requirements This role will be expected to travel to the Charlottesville location at least once per month to conduct audits and collect environmental monitoring samples. Additional travel may be required during cleanroom certification periods and during months when media-fill testing and gloved fingertip competency assessments are scheduled.
Status: Full-Time (40 hours/week)

Overview
The Pharmacy IV Quality Control Coordinator provides operational, analytical, and business support for Sentara. Federal laws, regulations, and programs require the entity to have ongoing oversight of usage to prevent diversion and ensure compliance with regulations and notices. This position conducts, monitors, analyzes, investigates, and completes special projects associated with key medication use metrics. The analyst assists with self-audits, the development of monitoring or operational protocols, and creation of efficient and effective internal controls for key medication use metrics. Responsible for ongoing analysis (in collaboration with departmental leadership) and individual facility performance to goals and expectations. Provides periodic reports of audit findings and proposed corrective action plans to departmental leadership and appropriate committees. Networks effectively both horizontally across multiple disciplines and vertically throughout the leadership hierarchy.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct weekly cleanroom environmental and compliance audits
- Perform and document monthly surface sampling activities
- Coordinate cleanroom certification activities
- Oversee monthly cleanroom cleaning requirements
- Complete 1 to 2 hours of direct observation for each IV technician monthly, including documented feedback and competency reporting
- Coordinate and administer media-fill testing, gloved fingertip testing, and associated training programs
- Train and onboard new IV room personnel
- Ensure compliance with cleanroom documentation requirements within Pharmacy Keeper
- Participate in IV room quality, regulatory, and operational workgroups
- Support ongoing quality improvement and regulatory readiness initiatives
Requirements:
Education
- Bachelors Level Degree (Preferred)
Certification/Licensure
- Advanced 340B Operations Certified Expert (340B ACE) Certification - Apexus (Preferred)
- Certified Pharmacy Technician (Preferred)
- RN License (Preferred)
- LPN License (Preferred)
- Relevant certifications are valued
Experience
- 3 years relevant experience in one of the following areas: health care, accounting, finance, pharmacy, information technology, or nursing (Required)
- 2 years IV room pharmacy technician experience (Preferred)
- Lead IV Technician and/or Designated Person experience (Preferred)
- Strong working knowledge of USP <797> and USP <800> (Preferred)
- Clinical and business experience (Preferred)
- 3 years auditing experience (Preferred)
- Prior hospital experience (Preferred)

We provide market-competitive compensation packages, inclusive of base pay, incentives, and benefits. The base pay range for full-time employment is $62,316.80 - $99,694.40 annually. Additional compensation may be available for this role, such as shift differentials, on-call pay, shift premiums, extra-shift incentives, or bonus opportunities. Compensation within the range may vary based on qualifications, experience, location, market conditions, and business needs. Note: If an annual salary is posted, it is based on a full-time colleague working 2,080 hours annually.

Provides leadership in optimal product preparation and dosing of medications, and provision of patient specific drug information to include patient specific dosing. Aides in the prevention and reporting of medication errors and adverse drug reactions according to policy. Supports quality relationships with health care professionals, families, and patients; and the pharmacist is actively involved in being further educated and providing education in all appropriate ways..
Position Highlights
- Retail environment filling discharge prescriptions, completing refills for complex patient populations, setting up mail, and helping families of patients directly.
- Clinical component includes evaluating doses and indications with their MAR, submitting prior authorizations, and making interventions with providers directly.
- The position can vary among a variety of shift times to cover scheduling gaps and PTO.
- Candidates must have regular availability for afternoon to closing shifts (e.g., between the hours of 1:00pm - 11:00pm).

Under the direct supervision of a pharmacy supervisor and pharmacist is responsible for performing daily operations within the pharmacy. Job Function
The Pharmacy Technician demonstrates consistent application of knowledge and skills in assisting the pharmacist in execution of appropriate, safe, efficacious, efficient, and cost-effective pharmaceutical care. The position participates in many procedural aspects of pharmacy practice under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist or technician supervisor and is an integral part of the pharmacy team. Essential Functions
- Assists the pharmacist in collecting clinical and other patient information and maintaining appropriate records as required by regulation and policy.
- Utilizes pharmacy technology effectively to prepare medication orders for dispensing, performs calculations as necessary, and compounds medications for accurate compounding as appropriate to practice site, in accordance with state law, policies, procedures, and protocols.
- Attains appropriate supervision and accuracy checks by the pharmacist(s) and clearly understands when a pharmacist must verify tasks and activities.

Job Profile Summary
The Pharmacy Technician demonstrates consistent application of knowledge and skills in assisting the pharmacist in execution of appropriate, safe, efficacious, efficient, and cost-effective pharmaceutical care. The position participates in many procedural aspects of pharmacy practice under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist or technician supervisor and is an integral part of the pharmacy team. This is a chemo/hazardous compounding shift. The schedule is Wednesday to Wednesday from 6am to 430pm. This position will work 8 shifts in a row from with 6 days off in between.
Essential Functions
- Assists with all phases of pharmacy services while under the supervision of a pharmacist as required by state of practice and job duties.
- Answers phones and provides excellent customer service as appropriate to practice site.
- Assists the pharmacist in collecting clinical and other patient information and maintaining appropriate records as required by regulation and policy.
- Utilizes pharmacy technology effectively to prepare medication orders for dispensing, performs calculations as necessary, and compounds medications for accurate compounding as appropriate to practice site, in accordance with state law, policies, procedures, and protocols.

Additional Job Description:
This full-time Clinical Pharmacy Float position will provide flexible coverage across both the adult Medicine Specialist services and the adult Hospitalist/Surgical services. The position is primarily day shift with weekend and holiday responsibilities and includes participation in the department’s night-shift grid as needed. Clinical responsibilities will vary based on the service being supported and include multidisciplinary care team rounding (when covering Medicine Specialist services), order verification and patient profile review, comprehensive medication management, pharmacokinetic consultation/execution of pharmacist-managed protocols.
Non-clinical expectations for this position include precepting learners, committee participation as appropriate, and serving as a member of the adult Code Blue response team. This position is designed to enhance inter-divisional resiliency and provide high-quality clinical coverage across both Medicine Specialist and Hospitalist care areas.

This position will work under the supervision of the pharmacist performing routine duties in packaging, distribution, non-sterile compounding, and record-keeping of pharmaceutical supplies. Serves as a liaison between the customer and the pharmacist. Becomes proficient in preparing compounded intravenous medications, total parenteral nutrition products, and chemotherapeutic agents within compliance with USP regulations. Effectively uses pharmacy computer systems to investigate and respond to missing medication requests. Consistently demonstrates an ability to assess a situation, consider alternatives, and choose the appropriate course of action. May educate and train peer Pharmacy Technicians, Technician Externs, Technician Trainees, and volunteers.Must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients.
CORE FUNCTIONS
1. Identifies medications and other items for reorder as necessary to maintain a continuous inventory of medications and supplies. Receives, checks-in, and restocks medications ordered through the wholesaler and other vendors verifying all quantities against invoices. Assesses practical ways to deal with shorted items and short-dated or unusable items.
2. Manages users within the automated dispensing technology database as per policy. Investigates discrepancies and troubleshoots malfunctions in automated dispensing technology.
3. Exhibits excellent interpersonal skills and is customer service oriented in all contacts with patients, visitors and staff. Responds to standard requests from internal customers. Interacts primarily with department personnel, cross-department personnel, internal customers, patients and physicians.
4. May use automated dispensing technology or requisition to restock medications to nursing and ancillary areas after checking by a pharmacist. When allowed by law and policy, and upon completion of proper training/competency assessment, may restock automated dispensing technology using barcode scanning verification devices. Restocks medications to all areas outside automated dispensing technology which may include but not limited to trays, code carts and emergency boxes.
5. Compounds non-sterile medication products. Understands and appropriately follows all product worksheets/recipes for documentation and check processes. Understands and adheres to all applicable USP compounding guidelines. Demonstrates knowledge of and consistently performs calibrations of equipment and accurately measures components for compounding. Repackages bulk medications into unit of use packaging. Completes accurate documentation of medications compounded and repackaged per policy.
6. Maintains a safe and clean working environment by complying with all policies, laws, and regulations. Performs quality control activities such as monthly nursing unit inspections and pharmacy section checks in a timely manner. Completes documentation of refrigerator temperatures, and equipment maintenance activities as required.
7. Handles narcotic medications following all federal and legal requirements as set through policy and procedure. Understands all regulatory requirements for receiving, compounding, repackaging, and distribution for controlled substances. Consistently adheres to all storage and inventory movement documentation requirements for controlled substances.
8. Becomes proficient in performing compounding and labeling of intravenous non-hazardous compounds using proper sterile and aseptic technique as appropriate to the site of care. Understands the different product lines in sterile populations (adult, pediatric, and neonate). Completes all required environmental cleaning procedures. Documents all required tasks and other information per policy.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Requires Pharmacy Technician licensure and active Pharmacy Technician certification OR Pharmacy Intern licensure in the state of practice.
Incumbents in Arizona are also required to provide the AZ Board of Pharmacy Wallet Card at time of hire.
Ability to complete moderate to difficult mathematical calculations using a hand-held calculator is required. Strong customer service focus, exceptional communication skills, strong attention to detail, prioritization capabilities, superior problem-solving skills, and ability to multi-task. Must have knowledge of computer software, particularly medication management information system software, Microsoft applications and automated dispensing systems. Must demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills for interfacing with all levels of staff, physicians, patients, and other contacts.
