About the Department
The Towers Outpatient pharmacy at Trinity Health Ann Arbor is open 7 days a week, offering various programs and services to help support and discharge patients.
Position Purpose
Provides delegated pharmacy technical services to patients and other Health System departments. Responds to routine and urgent requests in a prompt and efficient manner requiring a moderate amount of independent judgment, a moderate level of technical knowledge and a high degree of accuracy. Supports Retail Pharmacy Services at the direction of the pharmacist
Status available: Contingent
Hours: M-F 7:30a to 6pm, Sat 8am -4pm, Sun 9am-3pm
REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND CERTIFICATION/LICENSURE
Education:
Requires high school diploma or equivalent.
Experience: A minimum of one year of experience as a retail pharmacy technician
Licensure: An active Pharmacy Tech license through the State of Michigan
Certification: A certification as a Pharmacy Tech preferred
REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES
1. Ability to accurately perform basic mathematical calculations.
2. Ability to stand for long periods of time (at least four and up to eight hours per day) or to walk long distances without difficulty.
3. Basic typing and computer skills to do order entry, generate reports, retrieve data and diagnose minor printer problems. Ability to operate basic office equipment including a calculator, cash register, fax machine, word processor, etc.
4. Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail for up to 100% of the time when processing medication orders.
5. Ability to work independently and exercise good judgment when prioritizing work responsibilities.
6. Interpersonal skills necessary for effective communication with patients, physicians, nurses, and other Health System personnel.
7. Analytical skills to determine when phone calls or emergency situations need to be referred to a pharmacist.
Competencies:
1. Ability to accurately and quickly perform mathematical calculations commonly used in retail pharmacy.
2. Computer skills: the employee must: a) be able to type by using 10 fingers and the home keys b) know and use common computer keyboard shortcuts c) have a working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel d) learn, in detail, the retail pharmacy operating system . This includes all aspects of order input, insurance billing, editing, and rejected claim correction.

3. The employee must be able to: a) effectively prioritize work in order to minimize patient wait times
b) work independently without asking repeated questions on the same topic c) complete work with a high degree of accuracy and in a timely manner.

The employee must be able to: a) effectively work as a contributing team member with other pharmacy employees; b) communicate effectively and appropriately with patients, other hospital employees, and pharmacy employees; c) accept constructive criticism and apply it in order to improve their performance.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Greets customers and Health System personnel. Compiles appropriate patient/customer information, including third-party coverage, medication history, appropriate personal information, etc., required to process a prescription.
2. Processes and fills prescriptions and medication orders. Generates medication labels, auxiliary labels and documents for patient and pharmacy use.
3. Selects and repackages oral solids, liquids and ointments in individual patient quantities and prepares appropriate repackaging documentation.
4. Operates and maintains pharmacy software, automation, cash register, and associated pharmacy equipment.
5. Reviews and processes computer data to determine and complete appropriate billing procedures, including third-party insurance carriers, SJMH-related groups/accounts, physician offices, etc. within appropriate time-frames.
6. Generates and reviews data for medication trending, discrepancies, reconciliations, and other required reports.
7. Assumes responsibility for the maintenance of accounts, records, documents, etc. as required by state and regulatory agencies, and as determined by Pharmacy.
8. Communicates effectively with customers, physicians, Health System personnel, pharmacy third party payers and insurers, and external vendors by answering phones/voice mail, and responds promptly to their requests or by routing requests to applicable personnel.
9. Resolves problems with orders still in process, and properly refers drug information requests or special situational problems to a pharmacist.
10. Performs necessary Pharmacy functions including: ordering and stocking medications, removing expired medications, processing physician office orders, maintaining documentation as required by regulations, servicing customers requesting non-prescription/over-the-counter items, and other assigned Pharmacy tasks.
11. Interacts with patients and staff on hospital units to support the discharge prescription program.
12. Follows established departmental compounding practices and procedures.
13. Maintains cleanliness of work areas and pharmacy including stock storage and other areas consistent with department policies and procedures, and documents as required.

What You Will Do:
- Establish a working identity with our Pharmacy Team and continue to build upon our culture

Our Pharmacy Interns support pharmacists in delivering safe, accurate, and timely medication therapy to patients. Position Purpose:
The Pharmacy Intern assists the pharmacist in assuring timely and accurate provision of medications to patients. Routine intern functions are performed under the direct supervision of a pharmacist. Job Description:
The Pharmacy Technician demonstrates consistent application of knowledge and skills in assisting the pharmacist in execution of appropriate, safe, efficacious, efficient, and cost-effective pharmaceutical care. The position participates in many procedural aspects of pharmacy practice under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist or technician supervisor and is an integral part of the pharmacy team. Essential Functions
- Assists with all phases of pharmacy services while under the supervision of a pharmacist as required by state of practice and job duties.

The Retail Pharmacy Patient Services Associate works collaboratively to ensure safe dispensing of medications to guests through in person interactions or via home delivery. Supports a patient centered environment by providing courteous and professional customer service. Assists patients, families, and visitors while maintaining confidentiality of patients.Responsibilities and Essential Job Functions
- Maintains compliance with HIPAA policies and regulations.
- Actively listens and operates computer systems to accurately obtain necessary demographic information and ensure appropriate and accurate billing/payment.
- Collects payment from guests or processes payments on file, as appropriate. Counts and verifies cash amounts collected. Operates the cash register, prescription dispensing system, and shipping software, when applicable, to accurately and safely dispense all prescriptions. Follows all department policies and work flows when dispensing prescriptions, including patient identification policies.
- Intakes/scans in prescriptions when hard copies are submitted at the counter. Initiates refills when requested by guests at the counter.
- Maintains the reserve change supply for the cash registers.
- Completes daily closing activities for cash registers, including the completion of deposit slips, as directed.
- Maintains appropriate supplies necessary to dispense prescriptions at their assigned station.
- Directs guests with potential problems to the supervisor or pharmacist, as appropriate.
- Offers to arrange for patient to receive counseling by the pharmacist in alignment with dispensing policies.
- Assists in the identification and removal of unclaimed prescriptions from the will-call bins. Contacts patients to facilitate pick-up or shipment of these prescriptions.
- Maintains over-the-counter (OTC) pharmacy inventory. Assures the OTC shelves are clean, stocked, and faced. Maintains up-to-date shelf stickers for pricing. Communicates with pharmacy purchasing coordinator or pharmacist when issues are identified with OTC inventory.
- Maintains the retail pharmacy waiting area as a clean and comfortable environment for guests. Notifies supervisor or pharmacist of any maintenance or cleaning needs within the waiting area.
- Uses a courteous and professional customer-focused approach while interacting directly or on the telephone with guests. Uses customer service and critical thinking skills to solve problems for all guests. Escalates problems to the appropriate team member for resolution: pharmacy technician, pharmacist, supervisor, or other personnel as appropriate.
- Participates in organizational and departmental performance improvement efforts and facilitating effective communication relative to these initiatives. Maintains a plan for personal development and completion of competency validation records. Participates in goal setting, ongoing development, and goals of team.
