TYPICAL EXPERIENCE:
4 year recent relevant experience
SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:
- Knowledge of medical terminology, generic and trade pharmaceutical names, pharmaceutical calculations and laws and regulations.
- Knowledge and understanding of different Pharmacy practice settings, including narcotic delivery and procedures.
- Knowledge and ability to identify and employ pharmaceutical and medical terms, abbreviations and symbols commonly used in prescribing, dispensing, and record keeping of medications.
- Requires a basic working knowledge of legal requirements and accreditation standards including National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP), The Joint Commission (TJC), Title XXII, United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and United States Pharmacopeia (USP).
- Possess written and verbal communications skills to explain sensitive information clearly and professionally to diverse audiences, including non-medical people.
- Well-developed time management and organizational skills, including the ability to prioritize assignments and work within standardized operating procedures and scientific methods to achieve objectives and meet deadlines.
- General knowledge of computer applications, such as Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, and Outlook), related pharmaceutical technology, EHR, and EPIC.
- Carry out calculations and execute basic math skills needed for common dosage determination.
- Prioritize assignments and work within standardized policies, procedures, and scientific methods to achieve objectives and meet deadlines.
- Work independently, as well as be part of the team, including accomplishing multiple tasks in an environment with interruptions. Identify, evaluate, and resolve standard problems by selecting appropriate solutions from established options.

Summary

Oversees pharmaceutical care, including retrieving and evaluating biomedical literature and designing medication therapy regimens
Uses effective patient education techniques to provide counseling to patients and caregivers, including information on medication therapy, adverse effects, compliance, appropriate use, handling, and medication administration

This position will work under the supervision of the pharmacist performing routine duties in packaging, distribution, non-sterile compounding, and record-keeping of pharmaceutical supplies. Serves as a liaison between the customer and the pharmacist. Becomes proficient in preparing compounded intravenous medications, total parenteral nutrition products, and chemotherapeutic agents within compliance with USP regulations. Effectively uses pharmacy computer systems to investigate and respond to missing medication requests. Consistently demonstrates an ability to assess a situation, consider alternatives, and choose the appropriate course of action. May educate and train peer Pharmacy Technicians, Technician Externs, Technician Trainees, and volunteers.Must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients.
CORE FUNCTIONS
1. Identifies medications and other items for reorder as necessary to maintain a continuous inventory of medications and supplies. Receives, checks-in, and restocks medications ordered through the wholesaler and other vendors verifying all quantities against invoices. Assesses practical ways to deal with shorted items and short-dated or unusable items.
2. Manages users within the automated dispensing technology database as per policy. Investigates discrepancies and troubleshoots malfunctions in automated dispensing technology.
3. Exhibits excellent interpersonal skills and is customer service oriented in all contacts with patients, visitors and staff. Responds to standard requests from internal customers. Interacts primarily with department personnel, cross-department personnel, internal customers, patients and physicians.
4. May use automated dispensing technology or requisition to restock medications to nursing and ancillary areas after checking by a pharmacist. When allowed by law and policy, and upon completion of proper training/competency assessment, may restock automated dispensing technology using barcode scanning verification devices. Restocks medications to all areas outside automated dispensing technology which may include but not limited to trays, code carts and emergency boxes.
5. Compounds non-sterile medication products. Understands and appropriately follows all product worksheets/recipes for documentation and check processes. Understands and adheres to all applicable USP compounding guidelines. Demonstrates knowledge of and consistently performs calibrations of equipment and accurately measures components for compounding. Repackages bulk medications into unit of use packaging. Completes accurate documentation of medications compounded and repackaged per policy.
6. Maintains a safe and clean working environment by complying with all policies, laws, and regulations. Performs quality control activities such as monthly nursing unit inspections and pharmacy section checks in a timely manner. Completes documentation of refrigerator temperatures, and equipment maintenance activities as required.
7. Handles narcotic medications following all federal and legal requirements as set through policy and procedure. Understands all regulatory requirements for receiving, compounding, repackaging, and distribution for controlled substances. Consistently adheres to all storage and inventory movement documentation requirements for controlled substances.
8. Becomes proficient in performing compounding and labeling of intravenous non-hazardous compounds using proper sterile and aseptic technique as appropriate to the site of care. Understands the different product lines in sterile populations (adult, pediatric, and neonate). Completes all required environmental cleaning procedures. Documents all required tasks and other information per policy.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Requires Pharmacy Technician licensure and active Pharmacy Technician certification OR Pharmacy Intern licensure in the state of practice.
Incumbents in Arizona are also required to provide the AZ Board of Pharmacy Wallet Card at time of hire.
Ability to complete moderate to difficult mathematical calculations using a hand-held calculator is required. Strong customer service focus, exceptional communication skills, strong attention to detail, prioritization capabilities, superior problem-solving skills, and ability to multi-task. Must have knowledge of computer software, particularly medication management information system software, Microsoft applications and automated dispensing systems. Must demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills for interfacing with all levels of staff, physicians, patients, and other contacts.
Employees working at Banner Behavioral Health Hospital must possess an Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card at the time of hire and maintain the card for the duration of their employment. An Arizona Criminal History Affidavit must be signed upon hire.

The Banner Compounding Pharmacy is a state of the art facility that utilizes technology for inventory management, storage, verification of products, and standardization of procedures for quality control. This includes a Trulla drug ordering system and automated TPN compounders. The Banner Compounding Pharmacy specializes in custom-made, sterile preparations. This is an exciting new venture for the Banner System, and on the cutting edge of regulatory compliance. We are going above and beyond to meet regulations and working with the State Board of Pharmacy on regulatory changes to assure top quality and patient safety. This is NOT a hospital clean room or traditional compounding pharmacy.
We are looking for a full-time Compounding Pharmacy Technician to join our team in Chandler, AZ! Our site's hours of operation are 8AM - 7PM. This position is 40 hours per week, four 10-hour shifts, 9AM- 7:30PM including every other weekend.

POSITION SUMMARY
This position will work under the supervision of the pharmacist. Performs routine duties in packaging, distribution and record keeping of pharmaceutical supplies. Assists in preparing compounded and intravenous medications, total parenteral nutrition products, and hazardous or chemotherapeutic agents. Consistently demonstrates an ability to assess a situation, consider alternatives, and choose the appropriate course of action. May educate, train, and oversee the activities of the Pharmacy Technician, Technician Externs and Volunteers. Must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients.
CORE FUNCTIONS
1. Selects and/or prepares medications, under direct supervision, as indicated by policy and procedures and batch orders. Places medications in designated area for pharmacist to check, prepares medication orders for delivery to facilities as required. May also maintain databases and troubleshoot automated technology malfunctions.
2. Understands all regulatory requirements for receiving, compounding, repackaging, distribution, and documentation as a manufacture for controlled substances. Consistently adheres to all storage and inventory movement documentation requirements for controlled substances. Understands and can demonstrate the process for compounding and waste management of controlled substances.
3. Understands the delivery system and packing requirements (ice blankets, locks, invoice). Attends to customers and answers telephones in a courteous and timely manner. Serves as a liaison between the customer and the pharmacist.
4. Identifies medications and other items for reorder as necessary to maintain a continuous inventory of medications and supplies. Understand all processes for ordering of supplies and for the fulfillment of orders. Understands and utilizes inventory management technology. Monitors for inventory needs. Monitor for outdated/unusable product for all areas in pharmacy (racks, refrigerators, holding areas). Appropriately rotate inventory and release of holding batches. Appropriately dispose of pharmaceutical waste. Receives and restocks medications ordered through wholesaler and other vendors. Assesses practical ways to deal with shorted items and short-dated or unusable items.
5. Non-Sterile compounding: Understand and appropriately follows all product worksheets/recipes for documentation and check processes. Understands and adheres to all applicable USP/cGMP and aseptic technique guidelines. Demonstrates knowledge of and consistently performs calibrations of equipment and accurately measures components for compounding. Complies and documents all required tasks and other information per policy.
6. Assists in preparing and labeling of intravenous medications including total parenteral nutrition products and hazardous agents using proper sterile and aseptic technique. Understands and adheres to all applicable USP/cGMP and sterile technique guidelines. Understand the different product lines in sterile compounding (patient specific - TPN and non-patient specific batch) and the differences between the various populations (Adult, Pediatric, Neonate). . Completes all required environmental cleaning procedures. Documents all required tasks and other information per policy. Wears appropriate protective equipment properly (gloves, gowns, etc.). Understands the safe handling of hazardous drugs and demonstrates the correct receipt, storage, labeling, and transport process. Understands the use of preservative-free medications when for specified preparations.
7. Understand and appropriately operates repackaging equipment, including the labeling program. Can troubleshoot equipment. Understands and adheres to all applicable USP/cGMP and aseptic technique guidelines. Successfully completes all required competencies. Documents all required tasks and other information per policy. Consistently complies with all policies and procedures for quality assurance and patient safety.
8. Performs and passes all quality control activities such as media-fill and gloved-fingertip. Performs and understands environmental cleaning and testing requirements. Completes documentation on refrigerator temperatures, intravenous hood cleaning, and equipment maintenance activities as required. Coordinates and assists in supervising the work flow of the Pharmacy. Assists with training and ensures adherence to departmental policies and procedures. Assists in scheduling to assure staffing is at appropriate levels. Notify/documents all issues/reported events. Consistently complies with all policies and procedures for quality assurance and patient safety.
9. Participates in the following aspects of medication use: selection, procurement and storage, and dispensing. Internal customers may include Patients, Nurses, Licensed Independent Practitioners, Nursing Directors, Department Directors, Administrators and other health care team members for the purpose of integrating services, improving patient care and ensuring effective communication systems. External customers may include local, state, and national pharmacy organizations, Joint commission, state Board of Pharmacy, colleagues and peers, educational institutions and pharmaceutical representatives.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Requires Pharmacy Technician licensure and active Pharmacy Technician certification OR Pharmacy Intern licensure in the state of practice. Incumbents in Arizona are also required to provide the AZ Board of Pharmacy Wallet Card at time of hire.
One to two years of relative experience. Must possess good organizational, problem solving and computer skills. Must have good written and verbal communication skills for interfacing with all levels of staff, physicians, patients and other contacts.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Pharmacy technician experience. Knowledge of medication management information system software and automated dispensing systems. Knowledge of pharmaceutical manufacturing and regulations.
Additional related education and/or experience preferred.

Compensation:
Pay Range: $18.16 - $28.14 per hour
Actual compensation will fall within the range but may vary based on factors such as experience, qualifications, education, location, licensure, certification requirements, and comparisons to colleagues in similar roles.

SUMMARY: Under the supervision of a pharmacist and direction of a technician group leader or technician specialist, performs a variety of technical and support tasks designed to assist pharmacists in the formulation, preparation, dispensing and delivery of medications and pharmaceutical supplies in accordance with established policies and procedures, federal and state rules, and regulations, and in keeping with the scope of services provided and with consideration to the age of the patients being served. Under the supervision of a pharmacist, assists in the formulation and preparation of medications by:Reviewing practitioner medication orders and preparing medications for review and dispensing by a pharmacist.Performing general operations of electronic drug dispensing system (EDDS; e.g. Omnicell,) used in the inventory control and distribution of pharmaceuticals and related supplies, including maintaining, assigning, refilling and removing medication, including controlled substances, and generating and interpreting reports to perform above.Maintaining operating room medication inventory, including controlled substances.Preparing intravenous admixtures including chemotherapy, critical care infusions, and pediatric infusions utilizing aseptic techniques in a controlled environment according to computer-generated and/or pharmacist approved formulation record, including proper manipulation, labeling and expiration dating. Working in United States Pharmacopoeia (USP) 797 clean room environment and in accordance with procedures of the same.Preparing and repackaging non-sterile pharmaceutical products according to computer-generated and/or pharmacist approved formulation record, including proper technique, labeling, and expiration dating. Working in accordance with USP 795 procedures. Performs controlled substance discrepancy resolution in conjunction with other licensed health care professionals. Participates in controlled substances inventory management in the Pharmacy and the hospital. Delivers medications to clinic, procedural, treatment, operating room, and patient care areasi.Retrieves medication orders. Repackages and labels medications for distribution in accordance with pharmacist approved Packaging and Labeling Records. Prepares various emergency medication kits for pharmacist review and distribution to patient care areas. Performs routine procurement and inventory management of medications including ordering and receipt of chemotherapy and other pharmaceutical supplies. Completes necessary paperwork for controlled substance procurement and verifies receipt of such. Processes medication requisitions for departments and laboratories for pharmacist verification. Reconciles patient and department medication charges. Performs routine preventive maintenance to all equipment according to standards for same. Assists in maintaining related Pharmacy records and files, performing equipment calibration and maintenance. Assists in maintaining the Pharmacy and medication supply areas in a neat and orderly fashion ensuring medications are stored under proper conditions for light, temperature, sanitation, and segregation. Participates in quality assessment and improvement activities and medication safety initiatives of the Pharmacy and the hospital. Utilizes approved process for reporting actual, prevented and near miss medication errors. Answers the telephone and triages as appropriate. Interacts with internal and external customers in accordance with hospital Customer Service Standards. Assists in orientation and training of other pharmacy technicians and interns. Performs other duties as assigned. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: EXPERIENCE &BASIC KNOWLEDGE: High school graduate or equivalent. Completion of one to two years of college preferred. Maintains current unrestricted Rhode Island Pharmacy Technician licensure.strike/strike Holds and maintains current National Pharmacy Technician Certification (CPhT) or has a minimum of one-year licensed pharmacy technician work experience, sits for National Pharmacy Technician Certification (CPhT) exam within first 6 months of hire, and achieves and maintains National Pharmacy Technician Certification (CPhT) within 12 months of hire.
