Licensed Pharmacy Technician - In Patient

Under the immediate supervision of a pharmacist and Pharmacy Department leadership, provides daily pharmaceutical supportive services for the Department of Pharmacy according to established procedures and in compliance with pharmacy laws, other regulatory agencies and other members of the multi-disciplinary team. Responds to routine and emergency requests in a prompt and efficient manner, requiring a relatively high degree of independent judgement. Participates in departmental education activities and competency assessment. Actively supports and participates in the department's continuous quality improvement initiatives; promotes the organizational commitment to customer service.
Duties / Responsibilities:
High School Graduate or GED equivalent.
Completion of a formal Pharmacy Technician educational program and/or completion of an Associate's Degree is preferred.
Current licensure by the State of Michigan as Pharmacy Technician
Certification by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) is preferred.
Previous pharmacy experience, hospital-based pharmacy experience preferred.
Formal Pharmacy Technician program experiential education may be considered in lieu of work experience.
Essential mathematics skills to be able to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure.
Possesses effective computer and keyboarding skills; ability to work with Pharmacy Information Systems and automation used in the medication use process.
Able to use email to communicate with other members of the department including pharmacy management.
Excellent critical thinking skills and ability to make decisions in a fast-paced work environment.
A team oriented colleague that is detail oriented and passionate about medication and patient safety as well as
quality initiatives.
Excellent customer service orientation skills necessary in order to deal effectively with various levels of hospital personnel, outside customers and community groups.
Reads and interprets physician's medication orders, assists with filling, processing and dispensing of medications, re-packages and labels medication, including bulk supplies, with final check performed by a pharmacist.
Maintains cleanliness and aseptic technique while following established departmental compounding practices and procedures when mixing intravenous admixtures including IVPBs, large volume parenterals, and total parenteral nutrition, if necessary. Drug preparation necessitates working aseptically in a horizontal or vertical laminar (biological safety cabinet) flow hood using aseptic technique. Adheres to USP 797/USP 800 Guidelines.
Delivers controlled substances and other medications to nursing units' automated medication dispensing cabinets (ADC). Delivers other medication, IV solutions and all necessary forms throughout the hospital on a regularly scheduled basis to patient care areas.
Prepares medications and subsequently loads and unloads medication into ADC with appropriate bar code scanning. Fills inventory needs for nursing unit ADCs, non-cabinet stock, and fills unit dose drawers by placing the proper drugs in the bins according to the computerized patient profile.
Supports the drug inventory process including rotation and restocking of drug dispensing areas with drugs and supplies needed to process patient medication orders. Ensures the maintenance of a clean and orderly work area.
Answers phones according to established phone etiquette and directs calls to the proper personnel.
Determines when phone calls or emergency situations need to be referred to a pharmacist.
Completes nursing unit inspections, as assigned. Restocks crash cart trays and OCMCA boxes etc., as required in a timely manner. Alerts the pharmacists or pharmacy management of any discrepancies.
Fills controlled substance orders and reconciles all discrepancies on a daily basis. Reports any discrepancies to the pharmacist or pharmacy management as appropriate. Monitors any unusual activity for potential drug diversion.
Prepares and packages chemotherapy medications and other medications requiring special handling for subsequent administration to patients under the supervision of the pharmacist. This includes verifying drug doses and preparing preliminary drug profiles for patients on established chemotherapy protocols. Safely handles and manipulates cytotoxic and other special drugs and incidental equipment used in drug preparation while working aseptically in a vertical flow hood or biological safety cabinet. Adheres to all safety measures for handling chemotherapy/hazardous materials.
Maintains all necessary paperwork, legal documents, and records for all medications, including chemotherapy prepared for administration. Utilizing the pharmacy computer system, bills and/or credits patients for medication used. Maintains investigational drug research records and validates doses ordered using investigational drug protocols.
Obtains medications accurately from the department's automated medication supplier (i.e., BoxPicker). Loads and removes medications from this unit using bar code scanning of medication and patient labels. Prepares and labels doses removed for pharmacist final check.
Operates the unit dose packaging machine in an accurate and efficient manner. This includes restocking medications and replacing supplies, monitoring machine alarms, and ensuring doses are correctly labeled and prepared for pharmacist check.
Utilizes the MedBoard software system and bar code scanning to track the delivery of medications to the nursing units.
Assumes responsibility for performance of job duties in the safest possible manner, to ensure personal safety and that of coworkers, and to report all preventable hazards and unsafe practices immediately to management.
Maintains good rapport and cooperative relationships. Approaches conflict in a constructive manner. Helps to identify problems, offer solutions, and participate in their resolution.

Job Description:
This temporary, fixed-term position is designed for individuals seeking to fulfill the practical experience requirements necessary for pharmacy technician licensure. The trainee will work under the supervision of licensed pharmacists and experienced technicians in an inpatient hospital setting, gaining hands-on experience in medication preparation, distribution, inventory management, and patient safety protocols. The term is strictly limited to three months, regardless of the total hours completed during that period
Essential Functions
- The incumbent participates in many procedural aspects of pharmacy practice under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist and is an integral part of the pharmacy team.
- Caregivers in this position will receive paid on the job training and are expected to practice in compliance with pharmacy technician trainee licensure.
- The Pharmacy Technician Trainee will be enrolled in an approved program and complete coursework to become a licensed pharmacy technician.
- Upon completion of the program the trainee is required to submit for licensure. It is expected that any trainee will complete coursework within one year of starting the program.
- Technician trainee will be paid for practical experience.
- Didactic coursework will be completed by the technician trainee outside of working hours and is not compensated.
- Trainee may be required to work weekends, nights, and holidays.
- The Pharmacy Technician Trainee will prepare medication orders, receive prescriptions, complete required paperwork, assist with billing, stock medication, and deliver medication to patients.
- Supports patients, pharmacists, pharmacy students, pharmacy technicians, and other healthcare professionals in relevant areas of responsibility.
- Communicates effectively with all caregivers and stakeholders regarding responsibilities and identified concerns.
Skills
- Competently and effectively learns technical responsibilities as assigned and seeks appropriate training and peer feedback on routine responsibilities.
- The Pharmacy Technician Trainee understands and complies with state and federal laws, regulations, policies and procedures, and guidelines related to their specific area of practice and participates and supports financial responsibilities of the department, facility, and Intermountain Healthcare.
- Responsible to provide delivery of medications, information, and services in a professional, timely manner and to seek a team approach to developing and achieving best practices and processes.
- Consistently attains appropriate supervision and accuracy checks by the pharmacist(s) and clearly understands when a pharmacist is required to verify tasks and activities to deliver detail-oriented, consistent, and flexible care.
Qualifications
- Candidate must be at least 17 years old
- Candidate will enroll or be enrolled in a Pharmacy Technician training program per state guidelines
- Utah: Must apply for Pharmacy Technician Trainee License within four weeks of hire date and obtain within eight weeks of hire
- Colorado: Must apply for provisional Pharmacy Technician Registration
- Montana: Must apply for a provisional Pharmacy Technician Trainee License
- Idaho: No training license required
- Nevada: Must apply for Pharmacy Technician Trainee License
- Demonstrated basic computer skills and attention to detail

This position will work under the supervision of the pharmacist performing routine duties in packaging, distribution, non-sterile compounding, and record-keeping of pharmaceutical supplies. Serves as a liaison between the customer and the pharmacist. Effectively uses pharmacy computer systems to investigate and respond to missing medication requests. Consistently demonstrates an ability to assess a situation, consider alternatives, and choose the appropriate course of action. Demonstrates proficiency in preparing compounded intravenous medications, total parenteral nutrition products, and chemotherapeutic agents within compliance with USP <797>/<800>. Ensures that the sterile compounding environment and all equipment are cleaned and maintained according to policy. May educate and train peer Pharmacy Technicians, Technician Externs, Technician Trainees, and Volunteers.Must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients.
CORE FUNCTIONS
1. Identifies medications and other items for reorder as necessary to maintain a continuous inventory of medications and supplies. Receives, checks-in, and restocks medications ordered through the wholesaler and other vendors verifying all quantities against invoices. Assesses practical ways to deal with shorted items and short-dated or unusable items.
2. Manages users within the automated dispensing technology database as per policy. Investigates discrepancies and troubleshoots malfunctions in automated dispensing technology.
3. Exhibits excellent interpersonal skills and is customer service oriented in all contacts with patients, visitors and staff. Responds to standard requests from internal customers. Interacts primarily with department personnel, cross-department personnel, internal customers, patients and physicians.
4. May use automated dispensing technology or requisition to restock medications to nursing and ancillary areas after checking by a pharmacist. When allowed by law and policy, and upon completion of proper training/competency assessment, may restock automated dispensing technology using barcode scanning verification devices. Restocks medications to all areas outside automated dispensing technology which may include but not limited to trays, code carts and emergency boxes.
5. Compounds non-sterile medication products. Understands and appropriately follows all product worksheets/recipes for documentation and check processes. Understands and adheres to all applicable USP compounding guidelines. Demonstrates knowledge of and consistently performs calibrations of equipment and accurately measures components for compounding. Repackages bulk medications into unit of use packaging. Completes accurate documentation of medications compounded and repackaged per policy.
6. Maintains a safe and clean working environment by complying with all policies, laws, and regulations. Performs quality control activities such as monthly nursing unit inspections and pharmacy section checks in a timely manner. Completes documentation of refrigerator temperatures, and equipment maintenance activities as required.
7. Ensures the proper use of garbing and compounding techniques in accordance with policies and has knowledge of basic principles within USP <797> and USP<800>, laws, policies, and procedures that pertain to compounding. Performs compounding and labeling of intravenous compounds and hazardous agents to include chemotherapy using proper sterile and aseptic technique as appropriate to the site of care. Understands the different product lines in sterile compounding (patient specific and non-patient specific batch) and the differences between the various populations (Adult, Pediatric, Neonate). Completes all required environmental cleaning procedures. Documents all required tasks and other information per policy. Understands the safe handling of hazardous drugs and demonstrated the correct receipt, storage, labelling and transport process.
8. Handles narcotic medications following all federal and legal requirements as set through policy and procedure. Understands all regulatory requirements for receiving, compounding, repackaging, and distribution for controlled substances. Consistently adheres to all storage and inventory movement documentation requirements for controlled substances.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Requires Pharmacy Technician licensure and active Pharmacy Technician certification OR Pharmacy Intern licensure in the state of practice.
Incumbents in Arizona are also required to provide the AZ Board of Pharmacy Wallet Card at time of hire.
Minimum of two years pharmacy technician experience. Ability to complete moderate to difficult mathematical calculations using a hand-held calculator is required. Strong customer service focus, exceptional communication skills, strong attention to detail, prioritization capabilities, superior problem-solving skills, and ability to multi-task. Must have knowledge of computer software, particularly medication management information system software, Microsoft applications and automated dispensing systems. Must demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills for interfacing with all levels of staff, physicians, patients, and other contacts.
Employees working at Banner Behavioral Health Hospital must possess an Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card at the time of hire and maintain the card for the duration of their employment. An Arizona Criminal History Affidavit must be signed upon hire.

Under the direct supervision of a pharmacy supervisor and pharmacist is responsible for performing daily operations within the pharmacy. Performs medication related tasks such as packaging, preparation of all forms of medications, record keeping, and all aspects of drug distribution.Major Responsibilities:

This position will prepare, dispense, and compound medication under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist. Provide prescription support services for patients to ensure safe, appropriate, effective and efficient delivery of medication therapy. Provide excellent customer service skills, high attention to detail, strong problem solving, documentation and computer skills. Work closely with the multidisciplinary healthcare team to support pharmaceutical care activities, complete pharmacy billing activities, record keeping, reporting, inventory management, and arrange appropriate medication delivery.
CORE FUNCTIONS

- Practices as a pharmacy technician in accordance with all federal, state, DFCI and Joint Commission policies, regulations and standards
- Fills medication orders according to policy, while gaining proficiency with advanced preparations
- Ensures timely delivery of medication orders and/or supplies
- Utilizes multiple systems such as EHR (Electronic Health Record, Inventory Management Systems and other systems to complete and document duties. Identify issues and report as necessary
- Maintains the Pharmacy inventory: sorting, stocking, rotation of stock and expiration date checking
- Performs and documents quality control steps as required for safety and regulatory requirements
- Performs cleaning of sterile and non-sterile areas of the pharmacy as assigned
- Trains other employees as assigned
- Communicates and escalates issues or problems
- May be assigned to cross-cover other locations or areas (e.g. materials management, outpatient, infusion, etc.)
- Performs other duties as assigned
- Performs sterile and non-sterile compounding of predominately hazardous drugs in compliance with USP <795>, USP <797>, USP <800>, DFCI policies and procedures and, when applicable research protocols

MINIMUM JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
The position requires a high school diploma or equivalent. Prior work experience as a pharmacy technician is not required. The position also requires Massachusetts Board of Pharmacy Registration as a Pharmacy Technician or Pharmacy Technician Trainee, with National Pharmacy Technician Certification (PTCB) to be obtained within 2 years of hire, or a Massachusetts Pharmacy Intern License. For roles at Londonderry or Merrimack Valley satellite locations, the position requires New Hampshire Board of Pharmacy Registration as a Pharmacy Technician.

- Assists licensed pharmacist in technical duties related to preparation and distribution of medications
- Accurately selects, prepares, and labels medications for patients including hazardous drugs and controlled substances
- Assists with medication distribution tasks
- Screens phone calls and routes as needed using proper telephone and voicemail etiquette
- Assists in daily pharmacy procurement, inventory control, and outdate checking
- Complete documentation required for removing, stocking, and wasting controlled substances, where applicable
- Perform nonsterile compounding following proper USP standards, where applicable
- Perform sterile IV admixture, as defined at the entity level, using proper aseptic technique, where applicable
- Inspects all assigned medication storage areas for adherence to storage policies
- Completes and documents medication admission histories, as applicable at the facility level
- Seeks additional duties when required work is done and accepts other duties as assigned
- May participate in quality improvement initiatives to assure the excellence of departmental services
- May assist in training pharmacy technicians and extenders in orientation to the policies, procedures, and workflows involved in pharmacy operations as applicable at entity level
