Job Description
Join the MercyOne Family! We are looking to hire a Retail Pharmacy Tech Trainee.
As a Retail Pharmacy Tech Trainee at MercyOne, Reports to the Lead Pharmacist or in their absence, the Retail Pharmacy Supervisor.
Under the supervision of a pharmacist, assists in the provision of pharmaceutical care to patients ranging in age from newborns to geriatrics.
Tasks require a moderate amount of independent judgement, an advanced level of technical knowledge, and a high degree of accuracy
Schedule:
- Rotating shifts and hours may varyWest Campus Hours8:30 AM - 5:00 PM; M - F
General Requirements:
- Must be competent and accurate with performing math calculations involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, divisions, percentages, fractions and the metric system.
- Must demonstrate the ability to exercise professional judgment in dealing with pharmacy’s customers.
- Must be competent and thorough in performing job functions to all age groups.
- Must display satisfactory customer relation skills consistent with Mercy’s mission, values and expectations.
- Must display behavior consistent with Pharmacy Citizenship Standards.
- Must effectively utilize verbal and written communication skills.
- Must be able to organize, prioritize, and function in an environment with multiple stress factors.
- Must be competent with all hospital and pharmacy information system programs that pharmacy utilizes.
Education:
- Must be 17 years of age or older and eligible to sit for the national technician certification exam within 1 year of hire.
- Typing, clerical and science background are desirable.
- Registration with Iowa Board of Pharmacy prior to start of employment.
- Pass the test for and maintain national technician certification as outlined by the Iowa Board of Pharmacy within 1 year of employment. If unable to pass the test within 1 year of employment, the employee will need to be terminated from the pharmacy technician trainee position.
Note: A minimum of three months of “on the job” training is required to perform the job; 12-24 months is usually required to become proficient.

$21.85 - $32.80Major Responsibilities
- Assists licensed pharmacist in technical duties related to preparation and distribution of medications
- Accurately selects, prepares, and labels medications for patients including hazardous drugs and controlled substances
- Assists with medication distribution tasks
- Screens phone calls and routes as needed using proper telephone and voicemail etiquette
- Assists in daily pharmacy procurement, inventory control, and outdate checking
- Complete documentation required for removing, stocking, and wasting controlled substances, where applicable
- Perform nonsterile compounding following proper USP standards, where applicable
- Perform sterile IV admixture, as defined at the entity level, using proper aseptic technique, where applicable
- Inspects all assigned medication storage areas for adherence to storage policies
- Completes and documents medication admission histories, as applicable at the facility level
- Seeks additional duties when required work is done and accepts other duties as assigned
- May participate in quality improvement initiatives to assure the excellence of departmental services
- May assist in training pharmacy technicians and extenders in orientation to the policies, procedures, and workflows involved in pharmacy operations as applicable at entity level
- Abides by all organization policies and procedures and complies with all legal, regulatory, and accreditation standards
- Supports area leaders regarding goals and work assignments
- Obtaining and recording initial patient demographic and other required information, data entry of required information into the pharmacy system for record keeping, insurance verification and label generation purposes, and cashiering
- Develop competence in third-party billing functions
- Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served.
- May obtain immunization certification and perform immunizations for patients under the supervision of a registered pharmacist, where applicable
- Responsible for operating an Advocate Health-owned motor vehicle to deliver medications and other essential medical supplies as required by the designated department
Minimum Job Requirements
Education
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent Hospital/Inpatient pharmacy experience preferred.
Certification / Registration / License
- Registration or licensure with state board of pharmacy per state of employment requirements
- Must receive certification through Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (CPhT) or National Healthcareer Association (ExCPT) within 18 months from start date, or sooner if in more stringent in state

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
- Must be able to sit, stand, walk, lift, bend, kneel, climb, twist, crawl and reach above shoulders
- Requires considerable walking, standing, pushing mobile cart of approximately 50 pounds and lifting 35 pounds of material
- Must have functional vision, touch and hearing
- Must be able to speak and be understood by others to communicate effectively
- May be exposed to chemical and hazardous waste as well as blood and body fluids and communicable disease for which appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) is utilized to minimize exposure
- Frequent fine motor motion of hands and wrists to perform manipulative skills such as writing, typing, data entry into the computer, and preparation of medications, including use of syringes
- Takes necessary precautions to avoid inadvertent needle sticks, minor cuts or bruises. Exposed to various conditions throughout the workday such as walking on hard surfaces, climbing stairs and changes in temperature and humidity.

Duties: Surgical Pharmacy Technician - Inpatient Pharmacy:
Responsible for medication management for the pharmacy, nursing units and operating rooms including but not limited to ordering, receiving, sorting, distributing medications. - Collaborates with the System Manager of Antimicrobial Stewardship, Infectious Diseases physicians, ambulatory leadership, care management, infusion services, and other interdisciplinary stakeholders to develop, implement, and maintain evidence-based OPAT/COpAT services throughout the health system.
- Assists with development and standardization of OPAT/COpAT workflows, clinical pathways, documentation standards, and monitoring processes across inpatient and ambulatory settings.
- Facilitates safe transitions of care for patients discharged on antimicrobial therapy through coordination with inpatient teams, ambulatory infusion centers, home infusion agencies, dialysis centers, skilled nursing facilities, and home health providers.
- Reviews antimicrobial regimens, laboratory monitoring plans, vascular access considerations, culture data, and duration of therapy recommendations to ensure safe and effective outpatient antimicrobial management.

- Collaborates with infectious diseases providers, pharmacists, and other healthcare professionals to promote evidence-based antimicrobial utilization across OPAT/COpAT populations.

- Kentucky Board of Pharmacy and Indiana Board of Pharmacy license or willing and eligible to achieve within 6 months of hire. Kentucky license must specify that they are a preceptor.

Our Pharmacy Interns support pharmacists in delivering safe, accurate, and timely medication therapy to patients. Position Purpose:

Performs quality control activities such as monthly nursing unit inspections and pharmacy section checks in a timely manner. Completes documentation of refrigerator temperatures, and equipment maintenance activities as required.
7. Handles narcotic medications following all federal and legal requirements as set through policy and procedure. Understands all regulatory requirements for receiving, compounding, repackaging, and distribution for controlled substances. Consistently adheres to all storage and inventory movement documentation requirements for controlled substances.
8. Becomes proficient in performing compounding and labeling of intravenous non-hazardous compounds using proper sterile and aseptic technique as appropriate to the site of care. Understands the different product lines in sterile populations (adult, pediatric, and neonate). Completes all required environmental cleaning procedures. Documents all required tasks and other information per policy.

Under the direct supervision of a pharmacist, performs nonsterile compounding, delivers medications and is responsible for refilling and loading of medications into automated dispensing machines (ADMs). Performs other medication related tasks such as packaging, preparation of all forms of medications, record keeping, and all aspects of drug distribution. CORE FUNCTIONS
1. Identifies medications and other items for reorder as necessary to maintain a continuous inventory of medications and supplies. Receives, checks-in, and restocks medications ordered through the wholesaler and other vendors verifying all quantities against invoices. Assesses practical ways to deal with shorted items and short-dated or unusable items.
2. Manages users within the automated dispensing technology database as per policy. Investigates discrepancies and troubleshoots malfunctions in automated dispensing technology.

Understands and adheres to all applicable USP compounding guidelines. Demonstrates knowledge of and consistently performs calibrations of equipment and accurately measures components for compounding. Repackages bulk medications into unit of use packaging. Completes accurate documentation of medications compounded and repackaged per policy.
6. Maintains a safe and clean working environment by complying with all policies, laws, and regulations. Performs quality control activities such as monthly nursing unit inspections and pharmacy section checks in a timely manner. Completes documentation of refrigerator temperatures, and equipment maintenance activities as required.
7. Ensures the proper use of garbing and compounding techniques in accordance with policies and has knowledge of basic principles within USP <797> and USP<800>, laws, policies, and procedures that pertain to compounding. Performs compounding and labeling of intravenous compounds and hazardous agents to include chemotherapy using proper sterile and aseptic technique as appropriate to the site of care. Understands the different product lines in sterile compounding (patient specific and non-patient specific batch) and the differences between the various populations (Adult, Pediatric, Neonate). Completes all required environmental cleaning procedures. Documents all required tasks and other information per policy. Understands the safe handling of hazardous drugs and demonstrated the correct receipt, storage, labelling and transport process.
8. Handles narcotic medications following all federal and legal requirements as set through policy and procedure. Understands all regulatory requirements for receiving, compounding, repackaging, and distribution for controlled substances. Consistently adheres to all storage and inventory movement documentation requirements for controlled substances.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Requires Pharmacy Technician licensure and active Pharmacy Technician certification OR Pharmacy Intern licensure in the state of practice.
Incumbents in Arizona are also required to provide the AZ Board of Pharmacy Wallet Card at time of hire.
Minimum of two years pharmacy technician experience. Ability to complete moderate to difficult mathematical calculations using a hand-held calculator is required. Prepares medications and subsequently loads and unloads medication into ADC with appropriate bar code scanning. Fills inventory needs for nursing unit ADCs, non-cabinet stock, and fills unit dose drawers by placing the proper drugs in the bins according to the computerized patient profile.
Supports the drug inventory process including rotation and restocking of drug dispensing areas with drugs and supplies needed to process patient medication orders. Ensures the maintenance of a clean and orderly work area.
Answers phones according to established phone etiquette and directs calls to the proper personnel.
Determines when phone calls or emergency situations need to be referred to a pharmacist.
Completes nursing unit inspections, as assigned. Restocks crash cart trays and OCMCA boxes etc., as required in a timely manner. Alerts the pharmacists or pharmacy management of any discrepancies.
Fills controlled substance orders and reconciles all discrepancies on a daily basis. Reports any discrepancies to the pharmacist or pharmacy management as appropriate. Monitors any unusual activity for potential drug diversion.
Prepares and packages chemotherapy medications and other medications requiring special handling for subsequent administration to patients under the supervision of the pharmacist. This includes verifying drug doses and preparing preliminary drug profiles for patients on established chemotherapy protocols. Safely handles and manipulates cytotoxic and other special drugs and incidental equipment used in drug preparation while working aseptically in a vertical flow hood or biological safety cabinet. Adheres to all safety measures for handling chemotherapy/hazardous materials.
Maintains all necessary paperwork, legal documents, and records for all medications, including chemotherapy prepared for administration. Utilizing the pharmacy computer system, bills and/or credits patients for medication used. Maintains investigational drug research records and validates doses ordered using investigational drug protocols.
Obtains medications accurately from the department's automated medication supplier (i.e., BoxPicker). Loads and removes medications from this unit using bar code scanning of medication and patient labels. Prepares and labels doses removed for pharmacist final check.
Operates the unit dose packaging machine in an accurate and efficient manner. This includes restocking medications and replacing supplies, monitoring machine alarms, and ensuring doses are correctly labeled and prepared for pharmacist check.
Utilizes the MedBoard software system and bar code scanning to track the delivery of medications to the nursing units.
Assumes responsibility for performance of job duties in the safest possible manner, to ensure personal safety and that of coworkers, and to report all preventable hazards and unsafe practices immediately to management.

Additional Job Description:
- This Lead Pharmacy Technician will focus on system controlled substance compliance, drug diversion prevention, and investigation initiatives for all enterprise hospitals.
- The individual selected for this position will work collaboratively across departments throughout the entire health system to guide regulatory compliance across all aspects of controlled substances and diversion.
- This position will complete detailed investigations of events flagged for potential diversion.
- This position will audit official controlled substance documentation (including, but not limited to, Forms 222, 41, 106) to ensure regulatory compliance.
- This position may include occasional travel to DEA-registered sites across the health system.

Job Summary
Position is responsible for assisting the Pharmacist in the provision of pharmaceutical care by performing technical and clerical duties associated with the operation of the pharmacy.Job Description
Minimum Qualifications
Must be a minimum of 18 years of age.
Education: High school diploma or GED required.
Licenses/Certifications:
- Current Pharmacy Tech registration or Pharmacist intern registration with the Texas State Board of Pharmacy required. ACPE I.V Certification with completion of 40-hour course in I.V. admixture preferred.
- Pharmacy Sterile Product certification through accredited program is required if incumbent compounds sterile products.
Experience / Knowledge / Skills:
- Three (3) years of pharmacy experience required, preferably in a hospital pharmacy; employees hired on or prior to January 28th, 2022 are grandfathered in with 2 years of experience.
- Must have knowledge of medical terminology.
Pharmacy Technician II requires proficiency and routine activity in a minimum of three (3) skills from List I or a minimum of one (1) skill from List II that's being performed as the primary role of the job
List I:
- Distribution (Unit Dose/PYXIS)
- Inventory
- Pre-Packaging
- Satellite operation (i.e. OR, Pediatrics, etc.)

- Compounding

- IV admixture
Principal Accountabilities
- Selects prescribed medications according to dosage and strength indicated on patient medication file or cart-fill list. Delivers medications to the patient care areas.
- Stocks and monitors drug inventory levels, ensuring adequate and up-to-date supplies.
- Inspects and maintains emergency medication trays.
- Packages and labels unit dose oral liquids/tablets, and maintains pre-pack records.
- Responds to oral requests for medications from nursing personnel and other departments.
- Posts and codes patient pharmaceutical charges and credits into automated system, and returns credited medication to inventory. Reviews patient billing records for accuracy.
- Prepares intravenous antimicrobials, large volume parenterals, adult and neonatal TPN solutions, epidurals and intravenous antineoplastics.
- Documents Quality Improvement activities for the I.V. Room, e.g. hood cleaning, refrigeration temperature log, aseptic technique, etc.
- Follows processes to ensure all medications are compliant to technology safety checks.
- Prepares sterile products in an accurate and aseptic manner when appropriate.
- Attends to customers as a liaison and gathers a medication history if applicable.
- Properly manage pharmaceutical waste.
- Ensures safe care to patients, staff and visitors; adheres to all Memorial Hermann policies, procedures, and standards within budgetary specifications including time management, supply management, productivity and quality of service.
- Promotes individual professional growth and development by meeting requirements for mandatory/continuing education, skills competency, supports department-based goals which contribute to the success of the organization; serves as preceptor, mentor, and resource to less experienced staff.
