At Houston Methodist, the Sr Sterile Processing Technician position is responsible for maintaining high standards for decontamination, assembly, inspection, wrapping, and sterilization of surgical instruments and medical equipment for Surgical Services and all ancillary departments, which includes working in conjunction with the Operating Room (OR) staff to provide timely sterile products, trays, and case carts where applicable. This position maintains consistent and continuous workflow between the OR and Sterile Processing while practicing excellent customer service. The Sr Sterile Processing Technician position must be certified, and therefore should demonstrate advanced knowledge of sterilization techniques, surgical instruments, and an in-depth understanding of the Sterile Processing department's relationship with other departments within the hospital.

Collaborates with staff from the interprofessional health care team concerning patient safety to improve outcomes and the safe transition of care through effective assignment and shift handoffs and uses a structured format for regular communication with staff members and physicians.
- Serves as a preceptor and implements staff education specific to service lines and unit processes; coaches and mentors other staff and students. Role models, by example, open, professional communication to promote both work efforts and problem resolution and achieve mutual understanding. - Initiates recommendations for improvement of department scores for employee engagement.
SERVICE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Using advanced skills and job-based competencies, performs decontamination and assembling of complex surgical trays, individual and potentially customized instrumentation and equipment utilizing established count sheets. Wraps or contains items appropriately according to size and type of instrument or equipment.
- Functions independently to sterilize instruments and surgical trays by following prescribed manufacturer instructions for use and according to institutional policies and procedures.
- Identifies and prioritizes timely sterile products, trays and case carts by interpreting the surgery schedule and based on the needs of the OR staff and physicians.
- Ensures consistent and continuous workflow between the OR and Sterile Processing while practicing excellent customer service.
QUALITY/SAFETY ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Reviews and improves upon the effectiveness of the sterilization process by using internal, external and biological monitoring systems appropriately utilizing established department protocols and sterilizer manufacturers’ instructions for use.
- Anticipates/prevents and responds to emergent situations. Actively participates in organizing the work flow, problem-solving, and managing multiple ongoing priorities with minimal supervision.
- Understands and implements use of appropriate cleaning detergents and agents by reading directions and SDS sheets and utilizing all department equipment according to manufacturers’ instructions for use and department policies and protocols, providing clarification to others as needed.
FINANCE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Manages time effectively and efficiently, minimizing incidental overtime, by completing assigned work and cleaning workstation at the end of each shift.
- Utilizes department resources to ensure completeness of trays, instruments and equipment according to count sheets. Identifies cost saving measures related to processes and/or supplies utilized within the department to share with management.
GROWTH/INNOVATION ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Performs, trains, and mentors industry sterile processing standards, i.e., Steam, ETO and Low Temperature Hydrogen Peroxide, while seeking opportunities to expand learning beyond baseline competencies with a focus on continual development.
- Acts as resource on Shared Governance committee for department or other hospital committees. Participates in department improvement activities.
- Works in conjunction with SPD Educator to provide at least two relevant educational/in-service presentations based on service line and department location. Seeks opportunities to expand learning beyond baseline competencies with a focus on continual development. Completes and updates the Individual Development Plan on an ongoing basis.

SERVICE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Performs diagnostic MRI procedures to include common and special MRI exams. MRI exams use magnetism, radio waves, and a computer to produce images of body structures and gives insight on the chemical makeup of tissues.
- Proactively assesses, identifies and responds to the needs of the patient for adjustment or intervention to optimize patient care, image quality and patient experience. This includes: positioning, physiology, procedure preparation, and technical factors. Modifies technical factors to achieve desired imaging results and recognizes complications and limitations associated with certain procedures.
- Provides direct assistance to physicians during diagnostic or special MRI procedures, including assisting with sterile technique.
- Provides accurate explanations and instructions to patients and family members at an appropriate level utilizing verbal and non-verbal skills, terminology and language.
QUALITY/SAFETY ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Follows safety standards and conducts all imaging procedures accordingly. Maintains proper sterile techniques for procedures, regularly practices aseptic techniques, and ensures compliance with MRI safety and infection control procedures. Complies with job role, department and hospital safety standards, practices and policies.
- Identifies opportunities for corrective action and process improvement providing recommendations, and contributes to meeting department and hospital targets for quality and safety. Reports “near misses” and inputs errors promptly into appropriate hospital patient safety reporting system to improve processes and identify trends. Utilizes critical thinking skills to observe and proactively address patient reactions (i.e. contrast media and medications) or potential outcomes, as appropriate.
- Ensures all imaging equipment has had quality control (QC) performed as required and is in safe working order prior to use. Reports any malfunctions to management and regularly practices preventative maintenance procedures; calls for service if needed.
- Assists with implementation and education of department based safety initiatives and standards of practice.

The RN will be responsible for circulating and monitoring Cath/EP cases which includes patient assessments, medication administration, documentation and collaboration with fellow staff/physicians/fellows. This position does require wearing lead for every procedure and transporting patients. There’s also interactions required with vendor reps for different devices used in the lab. Cases include planned outpatients, inpatients, and emergencies. The preferred candidate must have experience working in Cath Lab, CVICU, CVOR, EP, or IR to be considered.

Full-Time: 3 12's Monday - Friday
Call Requirement: Late Call (7-11pm), Overnight Call (M-F 7p-7a), Weekend Call (Sat-Sun 7a to 7a)-Averaging 5-8 shifts a month.

Plans care in collaboration with members of the multidisciplinary team. Reviews and revises the plan of care to reflect changing patient needs based on evaluation of the patient’s status.
3. Implements the plan of care through direct patient care, coordination, delegation and supervision of the activities of the health care team. Provides care based on physician orders and the nursing plan of care, in compliance with policies and procedures, standards of care, and regulatory agency requirements. Delegates appropriately, and provides nursing supervision in the provision of care to patients by other licensed nurses and other personnel. Promotes continuity of care by accurately and completely communicating to other caregivers the status of patients for whom care is provided.
4. Evaluates the patient's and family's response to care and teaching, and revises the plan of care as needed. Evaluates patient progress towards goals and expected outcomes in collaboration with other health care team members. Evaluates patient's response and the effectiveness of patient teaching.
5. Documents assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation in the patient record. Documentation is legible, timely and in accordance with policy. Documentation reflects objective/subjective data, nursing interventions and patient's response to treatment. Notes physician orders accurately and in a timely manner.
6. Provides care based on the best evidence available and may participate in research activities within clinical practice. Participates in unit or facility shared leadership. Interacts and participates in the education, role development, and orientation of facility personnel, patients, students, families and visitors. Promotes/supports growth of others through precepting and mentoring when appropriate.
7. Contributes to society through activities that lead to excellent patient outcomes through timely, effective, efficient, equitable, and safe care. Actively participates in the improvement of national nursing quality indicators and outcomes. Such activities may include participating in professional organizations.
8. In some roles, this position may supervise staff and work flow of the department.
9.Interacts with all levels of staff in a variety of departments, physicians, patients, families and external contacts, such as employees of other health care institutions, community providers and agencies, concerning the health care of the patient. Interacts with other health care providers in numerous settings in order to report and ask for or clarify information. Also works with clergy to provide spiritual support. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Must possess a current, valid RN license in state of practice, temporary/interim RN license in state of practice, or compact RN licensure for current state of practice. BLS certification is required. Additional certification or continuing education may be required based on area of practice.

POSITION SUMMARY

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Requires national certification from the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) and licensure by the state regulatory agency as applicable. Advance certification by accrediting body in Mammography required within 18 months of hire. BLS certification required.
Roles supporting mobile medical unit require travel within local community.

About our program:
The Banner Health New Nurse Experience is a full-time Registered Nurse position that assists you in transitioning from a new graduate to a fully competent, professional nurse at Banner Health. This program provides a collaborative learning environment in which you can refine your nursing skills, enhance your knowledge, and develop new personal and professional relationships.
Successful candidates will be placed in specific units at Banner Health facilities to be clinically mentored by unit staff and educators. We offer all of our New Grads multiple Career Pathways and development opportunities to achieve your long-term career goals. Whether you are wanting to go into a specialty unit, leadership roles, non-bedside nursing opportunities, or any other sector of nursing - we will help you get there! The expectation is that you will stay on your NNE unit for at least 12 months to get a full and comprehensive training experience! Most new nurses will work three 12-hour shifts, which will include weekend and holiday rotations with other staff members.

POSITION SUMMARY
This position assesses, plans, implements, evaluates and documents nursing care of patients in accordance with organizational policies and in accordance with standards of professional nursing practice utilizing the framework for professional nursing practice and development. CORE FUNCTIONS
1. Assesses patient physical, psychological, social, spiritual, educational, developmental, cultural and discharge planning needs. Reviews patient history and physical with patient/family and assures completion within appropriate timeframe. Reviews available information obtained by other health care team members. Reviews diagnostics and laboratory data and reports abnormal results to the physician(s) and other appropriate caregivers. Completes assessment and reassessments according to patient need and as outlined in policy.
2. Formulates a plan of care, including the discharge plan, utilizing assessment data and patient, family and health team input. Initiates a plan of care based on patient-specific needs, assessment data and the medical plan of care. Goals for patient are realistic, measurable and developed in conjunction with the patient/family. Considers the physical, cultural, psychosocial, spiritual, age specific and educational needs of the patient in the plan of are. Plans care in collaboration with members of the multidisciplinary team. Reviews and revises the plan of care to reflect changing patient needs based on evaluation of the patient’s status.
3. Implements the plan of care through direct patient care, coordination, delegation and supervision of the activities of the health care team. Provides care based on physician orders and the nursing plan of care, in compliance with policies and procedures, standards of care, and regulatory agency requirements. Delegates appropriately, and provides nursing supervision in the provision of care to patients by other licensed nurses and other personnel. Promotes continuity of care by accurately and completely communicating to other caregivers the status of patients for whom care is provided.
4. Evaluates the patient's and family's response to care and teaching, and revises the plan of care as needed. Evaluates patient progress towards goals and expected outcomes in collaboration with other health care team members. Evaluates patient's response and the effectiveness of patient teaching.
5. Documents assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation in the patient record. Documentation is legible, timely and in accordance with policy. Documentation reflects objective/subjective data, nursing interventions and patient's response to treatment. Notes physician orders accurately and in a timely manner.
6. Provides care based on the best evidence available and may participate in research activities within clinical practice. Participates in unit or facility shared leadership. Interacts and participates in the education, role development, and orientation of facility personnel, patients, students, families and visitors. Promotes/supports growth of others through precepting and mentoring when appropriate.
7. Contributes to society through activities that lead to excellent patient outcomes through timely, effective, efficient, equitable, and safe care. Actively participates in the improvement of national nursing quality indicators and outcomes. Such activities may include participating in professional organizations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Must possess a current, valid RN license in state of practice, temporary/interim RN license in state of practice, or compact RN licensure for current state of practice. BLS certification is required. Additional certification or continuing education may be required based on area of practice.
Relates throughout the interview process the experience, training and education needed to perform the job. Experience in the clinical area for which he or she is applying is desired. Must maintain clinical performance competencies appropriate to the area in which they work as demonstrated through annual validations. Banner Registry and Travel acute care positions require a minimum of one year experience in an acute care hospital setting. This position selects and places surgical instruments, supplies and equipment during surgery. Scrubs and provides instruments, sutures, and other sterile supplies during surgical procedure. Participants in the training and orientation of surgical technology staff and students, as assigned. Is proficient to scrub on a minimum of two surgical specialties.
The Cardiovascular Operating Room Surgical Technologist is responsible for assisting the physician with advanced tasks during surgical procedures which include cardiopulmonary bypass/heart-lung machine use, cardiac assistive devices, and vascular access and interventions. The CVOR ST must be able to work under high pressure in a fast paced environment.
CORE FUNCTIONS
1. Prepares for surgical procedures. Pulls appropriate instruments and supplies and ensures good working order of instruments. Reviews case carts for correct instruments and supplies. Troubleshoots malfunctioning equipment and makes minor adjustments or calls biomedical equipment staff. Checks schedule and plans ahead for upcoming surgical case needs.
2. Anticipates the surgeon's needs. Passes instruments and retracts tissue. Maintains competency to scrub in a minimum of two surgical specialties.
3. Demonstrates the principles of aseptic technique and universal precautions throughout the procedure. Disposes of sharps and trash and places used supplies into case cart for processing. Participates in counting sharps, instruments and sponges. Prepares instruments for cleaning following each case.
4. Ensures that all surgeon preference cards and pick lists are accurate.
5. Assists with OR turnover between cases. Participates in stocking, replenishing supplies and cleaning operating rooms.
6. Participates in or leads the training and orientation of surgical technology staff and students, as assigned.
7. May provide business support to the department including administrative tasks.
8. This position follows safety procedures in regard to medication labeling, appropriate handling of specimens, appropriate handling of sharps, time-out procedure, radiation and laser safety, infection control, assembling and disassembling instruments. Functions as a team member in the Emergency Department and assists physicians and ED Staff to provide care to Emergency Department patients as needed. Meets the qualifications to provide care for patients from birth to over 100 years range. Performs duties to provide the highest level of patient care and maximize patient satisfaction. Accepts an assignment at any Life Flight site as directed by leadership to insure adequate staffing.
Job Duties:
- Provides paramedic level advanced life support until patient care is relinquished to accepting medical facility.
- Maintains thorough patient care documentation in the electronic medical record.
- Practices within the paramedic scope of practice as defined by Command Physician, or as needed under the written guidelines of the Emergency Health Services Council Regional Protocols or the Department of Health Emergency Medical Services ACT.
- Maintains competency in knowledge and psychomotor skills by participating in ongoing laboratory and clinical experiences.
- Communicates educational needs to Life Flight Program Coordinator, Operations Director and MD Director.
- Acquires the F-PC credential within one year of hire.
- Sets up sterile trays using aseptic techniques.
- Maintains medical interior of the Life Flight helicopters.
- Assures adequate inventory of supplies and equipment.
- Assures orderly environment in glasshouse and hanger.
- Functions as Flight Crew member and assists the pilot when needed.
- Assists in the Communication center as required.
- Complies with safety standards to assure safety of self, medical crew members, patient and equipment during all phases of flight.
- Maintains good communication and positive interpersonal relationships.
- Participates in patient follow up as stated in guidelines.
- Participates in planned marketing and teaching activities.
- Serves as a role model, teacher and clinical resource.
- Acts as preceptor and participates in orientation of new employees and students as assigned.
- Acts as liaison.
- Communicates program goals and objectives.
- Participates in staff development and continuing education programs.
- Assists in conducting safety briefings as needed.
- Maintains awareness of current issues related to paramedics through participation in professional activities.
- Participates in departmental activities, projects and committees regularly.
- Participates in Performance Improvement activities as assigned.
- Undertakes and maintains projects as assigned.
- Actively participates in patient safety improvement and management program.
- Participates in required organizational and departmental patient safety education programs and other activities designed to improve departmental and organizational patient safety.
- Promptly reports serious events and incidents in accordance with established hospital policy and procedure.
Works in a patient care environment in and around aircraft and is exposed to possible infectious diseases and chemical toxins. Position may require sitting for long periods of time in a helicopter or in an office environment. Ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds. Exposed to non-conventional motion, noise, vibration, jet fumes, and extreme temperatures. Working conditions in or near aircraft and/or aircraft hangar environment on a daily basis and may be exposed to loud aircraft noise, fumes, gases, odors, dust particles, and mechanical and electrical hazards. Travel may be required. Employee may not exceed 250 lbs in weight in flight gear. Accountable for satisfying all job specific obligations and complying with all organization policies and procedures.
