At Houston Methodist, the Lactation Support Consultant position functions at the Proficient level according to Benner's model of clinical practice and is responsible for women's services patient educational needs to include breast feeding support under the general supervision of the Nurse Director. In addition to functioning as a staff nurse as needed, this position provides professional patient nursing care to a diverse patient population and is considered an expert in a specialty. In collaboration with the Nurse Director, Managers and Charge Nurses, the Lactation Support Consultant position is responsible for the quality of patient care through the provision of lactation support or education and the development of guidance for the caregivers who support the childbearing families learning needs. This position serves as a clinical resource for both unit and hospital staff and coordinates unit and hospital-wide education in partnership with management.

EDUCATION
- Bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited school of Nursing
EXPERIENCE
- Three years clinical experience in lactation support, mother/baby and/or patient educational activities/programs
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS
Required
- RN - Registered Nurse - Texas State Licensure - Texas Board of Nursing_PSV Compact Licensure – Must obtain permanent Texas license within 60 days (if establishing Texas residency) and
- BLS - Basic Life Support or Instructor (AHA) - American Heart Association and
- NRP - Neonatal Resuscitation or Instructor (AHA,AAP) - American Heart Association and American Academy of Pediatrics and
- Magnet ANCC-recognized certification in Women Services specialty: CLC, RNC-OB, RNC-MNN, IBCLC, RNC-NIC, CCNR(N), or NPS

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
PEOPLE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Utilizes strong knowledge base in lactation support or women’s health to educate the patient in various settings, grief support as needed and the overall childbearing family’s educational needs. Maintains an open line of communication with Nurse Director, Clinical Manager and Charge Nurses regarding actual or potential issues related to patient education/lactation.
- Provides consultative support to the staff and physicians and serves as a problem solver. Provides clinical resource expertise to clinicians and providers. Collaborates to foster healthy relationships in the work environment such as mitigation of conflict.
- Improves nurse satisfaction by serving as a role model and mentor, as evidenced by the annual RN-RN teamwork score and interprofessional relationship score.
SERVICE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Assesses patient’s educational and/or lactation support needs and provides clinical support and resources to maternal patients across the entity and in the community.
- Assesses for staff educational needs, then plans, develops, and implements programs related to patient educational needs to include lactation. Acts as a model and coaches staff in effective verbal, non-verbal and written communication, which includes active listening and teaching.
- Facilitates the planning, development and implementation of prenatal and/or breastfeeding education classes, at the direction of leadership.
QUALITY/SAFETY ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Role models highly developed assessment, clinical documentation, leadership and analytical skills; integrates and contributes to professional practice standards, policies, procedures, protocols and leads improvements in patient safety-related processes. Contributes to development of service line and hospital standards and guidelines.
- Leads and supports ongoing initiatives to improve quality and safety scores on the unit and hospital scorecards, through peer-to-peer accountability, reporting near misses and identifying solutions by collaborating with the interprofessional team. Role models situational awareness, using teachable moments to improve safety.
- Follows the standards related to regulatory requirements and professional practice as outlined in the Houston Methodist Professional Nursing Practice document. Participates in the maternal and/or neonatal QAPI meetings, collecting and analyzing data as appropriate.
FINANCE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Models independent time management effectively and prioritization of daily tasks. Actively participates in the stewardship and efficient utilization of resources and needs including unit capital and operational budgets.
- Contributes towards meeting department financial targets on unit-based scorecard through decreasing length of stay, optimizing efficiency and other areas according to department specifications.
GROWTH/INNOVATION ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Leads and identifies opportunities for practice changes and performance improvement. Investigates and incorporates evidence-based practices which are presented to shared governance and leadership. Functions willingly as a change agent, adapts to unexpected changes, converting ideas and plans into action.
- Actively participates in designated hospital and shared governance committees, disseminating necessary information to staff. Maintains personal professional development through organization membership, attendance at seminars, workshops and other educational programs, to ensure awareness of current developments and trends in patient educational needs. Completes and updates the individual development plan (IDP) on an on-going basis

Performs a variety of technical radiologic procedures using standard, portable and/or specialized x-ray equipment to apply prescribed ionizing radiation in order to assist physicians in the diagnosis and treatment of patients' illnesses and injuries. Performs related tasks such as assisting patients in positioning for correct anatomical exposure, maintaining order and cleanliness of work area and performing routine clerical tasks.I. Major Responsibilities:
1. Â Prepares patient for exams as required and insures patient comfort and modesty at all times. Obtains and examines the requisition for imaging examination. Always checks patient identification band for inpatients and two methods of identification for outpatients before any procedure is performed. Obtains informed consent and/or contrast questionnaire when appropriate and consults with appropriate Radiologist regarding contrast administration, imaging protocols.
2. Â Participates in transfer of patients if needed, positions and instructs patients regarding the procedure in order to obtain and effect the desired screening/diagnostic results as specified by the physician.Â
3. Â Follows all department established and appropriate policies and procedures as required. Â Makes changes and adjustments to techniques as required by observance of physician, Supervisor and self-improvement and initiative.
4. Â Provides protection according to department policy to unaffected areas of the body from radiation exposure in accordance with prescribed safety standards.
5. Â Calculates and selects proper technical factors as appropriate to the procedure. Selects equipment appropriate to the patient and the examination to be performed. Â Positions patient and equipment to provide images specified by department protocol or requisition form.Â
6. Â Evaluates the images to assure that they contain proper identification and are of diagnostic quality. Adjusts techniques and factors when necessary due to improper studies or quality factors. Checks equipment and accessories to insure they are in proper operating condition.
7. Â Operates imaging equipment according to specific diagnostic procedure and in conformance to established routines and techniques. Â Properly utilizes and maintains computed radiography and direct imaging equipment. Â Reviews electronic images to ensure that it is of acceptable quality and completeness for screening/diagnostic purposes. Â Utilizes portable x-ray equipment to execute diagnostic procedures in patient rooms, surgery and in other instances where it is not feasible to transfer the patient to regular treatment room. Â Transfers or duplicates films/images as directed.
8. Â Follows PACs workflow procedures, working with electronic work lists, repair exceptions, ensuring all electronic images meet quality standards including the correct patient demographics and accession numbers. Ensures all images are acquired and all exams are completed in the RIS (Radiology Information System) in a timely fashion. Works independently in all areas, demonstrating a thorough knowledge of modality policy, procedures and workflow.Â
9. Â Initiates hard stop when appropriate and notifies appropriate staff.Â
10. Monitors patients receiving contrast for adverse reactions and notified appropriate staff if needed. Â Explains procedures to the patient and family members. Answers patient and family questions, ensuring that concerns are addressed.
11. Assists physicians in the performance of specialized examinations by preparing equipment, syringes and contrast media, holding and turning patients, administering contrast media and passing instruments and supplies. Routinely lays out sterile supplies needed for special procedures. Â Understands the nature of the procedure to ensure proper imaging and that the proper equipment and supplies are available according to the Universal Protocol.
12. Ensures that images, examination requisitions and other related records are properly completed for proper patient identification, statistical and billing purposes. Â Prepares images for reading by Radiologist.
13. Works as Radiographic Technologist and performs duties in other areas and/or modalities as needed. Â Maintains competence in standard radiologic procedures by rotating into radiology areas as assigned.
14. Reports any hazardous conditions or equipment breakdown immediately to supervisor. Â Takes defective equipment out of service.
15. Maintains work area in clean and orderly condition and ensures that examination rooms are properly supplied with equipment and materials. Â Initiates requisitions for supplies as required
16. Understands and practices ALARA principles of Radiation Protection including the use and exchange of personal dosimeters.

1. RTR licensure in the Commonwealth Massachusetts, this includes a temporary (1 year) MA license..
2. ARRT certification in Radiology is required within 12 months from date of hire as a condition of continued employment.
3. BLS certification.Â
4. Some specialty modalities may require additional formal training and certification. Â
Experience/Skills:
Required:
1. Maintain all area specific CEUs for ARRT, DPH according to regulation.Â
Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.

Banner - University Medical Center South is a comprehensive academic medical center that includes an Emergency department, a state-designated trauma center and a Behavioral Health Pavilion. We are an Arizona Department of Health Services-accredited Cardiac Receiving Center and a Nurses Improving Care for Health system Elders-designated senior-friendly hospital. The hospital is staffed by physicians who are full-time faculty of the University of Arizona College of Medicine - Tucson and is managed by Banner Health under an operating agreement with Pima County. Our specialty services include inpatient and outpatient behavioral health, treatment and education for diabetes, innovative geriatrics care and comprehensive orthopedics.POSITION SUMMARY
This position is responsible for providing patient care and assists health care providers in performing assigned patient procedures within scope of training. Position receives general supervision from RN, APN, PA, or Physician in providing patient care.
CORE FUNCTIONS
1. Under general supervision of the RN, APN, PA, or Physician, performs assigned procedures including, but not limited to: electrocardiogram testing (EKG); wound cleansing; initial, repeat and orthostatic vital sign measurements; application of monitor leads, specimen collection, and transports stable telemetry or non-monitored patients to nursing units. Advanced skills and functions: Where state statute permits, performs blood glucose testing; phlebotomy; saline lock insertion; IV discontinuation; bladder (Foley) catheterization. After training in these advanced skills the ED Tech may perform these functions per state and facility guidelines on adult patients and pediatric patients twelve years of age and older upon direct delegation of the task.
2. Sets up, prepares patient and assists with patient exam and minor surgical or health procedures within scope of training such as, but not limited to: lumbar punctures; sterile instrument and field preparation, suturing lacerations, chest tube insertion, closed fracture reduction, gastric lavage, pelvic examinations, restraint application, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Applies orthopedic devices, to include pre-manufactured and plaster splints under physician direction.
3. Performs specimen collection, ensuring accuracy in identification and integrity by using appropriate techniques for all age criteria as required by Lab. Where state statute permits, performs point of care testing for blood glucose, hemoccult and gastroccult or other tests, and performs quality control checks on point of care equipment as required.
4. Provides communication and updates to RN, Physician or other providers related to perceived reactions or changes to patients’ condition. Accurately records information in the patient record, documents vital signs and procedures completed, as well as the equipment and techniques utilized.
5. Monitors supply stock levels and reports needs. Notifies housekeeping, maintenance, biomedical engineering, and others to ensure proper equipment and a safe environment is maintained. Maintains appropriate levels of stock in medication room, exam room bedside carts, and specialty carts. Assists with health unit coordination tasks and reception responsibilities as needed.
6. Attends department meetings and educational sessions; Assists in orienting and training of new ED Technicians.
7. Position receives general supervision from RN, APN, PA, or Physician and other appropriate licensed health professionals. Position uses problem solving skills and provides effective communication with patients, patient families, health care providers and ancillary departments within the organization to provide quality patient care.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma/GED or equivalent working knowledge.
Requires Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. In Colorado: Either Emergency Medical Technician–Basic (EMT-B) or higher with state licensure or state certification.
Position requires basic computer skills, effective communication (written and verbal) skills, and problem-solving ability.
