This includes establishing the appointment type, specific provider clinic, and appointment time. Schedules follow-up appointment using the on-line scheduling system. May schedule appointments for patients who need lab work, diagnostic imaging or referral to other medical providers. Refers technical/clinical inquiries to appropriate personnel. Utilizes the on-line billing system to enter diagnosis/service codes from encounter sheets. This includes accurately entering the appropriate code in the hospital's billing system. Completes pre-registration and registration process using the on-line billing system. Verifies demographic data, insurance authorization information, co-pays and physician. Collects co-payments and provides patients with receipts. Produces registration cards using the on-line system and card embosser. Photocopies front and back of insurance card. Confirms patient eligibility with insurance carriers and obtains visit authorizations as necessary. Provides mature, quality customer service to patients, their families and/or their representatives. Mails informational material to new patients in advance of scheduled appointments. As necessary, contacts agencies outside the Hospital to obtain pertinent patient information and to coordinate clinic/treatment programs. Contacts third party payors to obtain required pre-authorizations in accordance with established policiesActs as an outpatient center receptionist. Makes telephone calls to patients as appointment reminders. Answers incoming calls. Returns phone calls to patients, physician offices and other medical providers such as laboratory and radiology facilities. Greets arriving patients and verifies pertinent information and physician using the online billing system. Orients patients to the specific outpatient center as a hospital-based service. Interacts effectively with patients and their family members.Handles coding/billing within parameters as outlined in the department guideline. Using the on-line billing system enters diagnosis codes/service codes from encounter sheets. Verifies the appropriateness of the diagnostic code prior to entering in the billing system. Interacts with patients and Patient Financial Services in order to resolve billing issues, including denials. Appropriately refers patients to patient advocate for financial counseling.Obtains and organizes medical records for use by physicians and nurses. Ensures patient's file is complete prior to treatment/clinic visit including appropriate records, lab test results and x-rays. Evaluates file prior to schedule visit and follows up with other Hospital departments to obtain missing dataPrints reports using both the online scheduling and billing systems. SUMMARY:
The Inpatient PM&R Consult Service supports acute care patients at Rhode Island Hospital and The Miriam Hospital whose recovery depends on thoughtful, early, and highly coordinated rehabilitation assessment. This service works at the intersection of complex medical care, neurologic recovery, trauma, orthopedic and postsurgical management, discharge planning, and systems-based care.
The Advanced Practice Provider will work alongside and in support of a physiatrist with subspecialty training in neurorehabilitation, helping to deliver high-level consultative rehabilitation care in a fast-paced tertiary care academic environment. This role is designed for a clinically strong, operationally savvy, and highly collaborative PA or NP who is energized by medically complex patients, interdisciplinary care, and the opportunity to help shape an expanding hospital-based rehabilitation service.
Provide high-quality, evidence-based assessment and co-management of acute hospital patients with complex medical, neurologic, trauma, orthopedic, and postsurgical conditions requiring rehabilitation expertise.
Perform comprehensive inpatient rehabilitation evaluations, including functional assessment, mobility and self-care needs, rehabilitation candidacy, equipment needs, and discharge planning recommendations.
Collaborate closely with referring medical, surgical, and subspecialty teams to identify rehabilitation needs early, reduce avoidable hospital length of stay, and facilitate safe, efficient transitions of care.
Help determine the most appropriate next level of care, including discharge to home with outpatient PM&R follow-up, other post-acute rehabilitation services, or admission to Vanderbilt Inpatient Acute Rehabilitation at Newport Hospital within the Brown University Health system.
Serve as a key liaison among the acute hospital teams, case management, therapy services, social work, nursing, and the inpatient consultative physiatrist to ensure timely communication and coordinated execution of care plans.
Assist with administrative and care-coordination needs related to inpatient rehabilitation planning, documentation, transition management, and communication across sites and services.
Provide backup clinical support on the acute rehabilitation unit, as needed, to support staffing and continuity of rehabilitation care.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Evaluate and follow medically complex inpatients referred for PM&R consultation.
Develop and document rehabilitation-focused assessments and plans in partnership with the supervising physiatrist.
Identify functional impairments, activity limitations, rehabilitation goals, barriers to discharge, and post-acute care needs.
Participate in interdisciplinary discussions with hospital medicine, neurology, neurosurgery, trauma, orthopedics, intensive care, case management, nursing, PT, OT, SLP, and social work.
Support timely implementation of recommendations related to mobility, therapy intensity, precautions, equipment, spasticity-related issues, neuro-recovery needs, and longitudinal rehabilitation planning.
Monitor patient progress and update recommendations as clinical status evolves.
Performs other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION:
Licensed or license-eligible Nurse Practitioner in Rhode Island.
EXPERIENCE:

Through specialized training, the Critical Care Transport Nurse will provide interventions including but not limited to advanced airway management, ventilatory support, continuous cardiac/hemodynamic monitoring, cardiac assist devices, performing advanced surgical interventions and diagnostic testing.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Performs patient care at incident scenes and during transport in accordance with established standards, protocols, and policies under the supervision of the physician medical director (or his/her designee).
- Provides comprehensive, effective, and safe care to any patient requiring transportation.
- Participates in training of emergency care personnel (EMTs, students, first responders, residents, attending physicians, nurses, and others) including curricula development, precepting, mentoring, simulation-based training, conferences, and other training.
- Assists in development of patient care protocols, methods, training curricula, and other research by participating in shared governance committees and other activities. Remain current with literature pertaining to critical care and transportation.
- Attends required staff meetings, educational events, and training sessions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Must have current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Rhode Island. Baccalaureate in nursing preferred.
Current American Heart Association BLS, ACLS and PALS certification required.
Must obtain Trauma certification, and Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification within one year in position.
Advanced transport specific nursing certification within two years in the position.
Nationally Registered and Rhode Island EMT certification or actively enrolled.
EXPERIENCE:
Three years current full-time nursing experience within an advanced critical care area such as an Intensive Care Unit or Emergency Department is required.
One year of this experience must be an Intensive Care Unit.
In lieu of this experience, employee can have 10 years of active critical care transport experience.
Minimum of 1000 hours of hands-on pediatric patient care is required.
Completion of advanced skills training as determined by department policies and protocols.

Conducts routine and moderately complex laboratory tests where range of possibilities is limited, utilizing established techniques and methods. Work is not as complex and not at level of independent judgement as that performed by Pathology Technologists. Performs standard qualitative and quantitative tests and analyses on body fluids using automated and nonautomated equipment.
Receives laboratory specimens, ensures proper and complete patient information is recorded on specimens and test requisitions.
Follows strict principles of asepsis and antisepsis in performing duties. Assembles supplies and equipment necessary to perform work. Assures equipment is clean and functioning properly. Calibrates equipment and runs specimens to be tested on a variety of automated equipment.
Prepares standard solutions, media reagents and stains by pouring, measuring and mixing liquids, powders and crystalline chemicals according to established formulae and procedures.
