Major Responsibilities:
- Uses Respiratory therapy processes to support assessment of patient utilizing a variety of skills such as pulmonary diagnostics, chest radiograph, hemodynamic values, laboratory values, and correlates blood gases and electrolytes. Can identify and address the special needs of patient population specific to department services.
- Operates specialized ventilators in critical and non-critical care venues. Assists physician with bedside or other procedures as applicable to facility.
- Provides medication treatments and therapies per physician order and/or patient driven respiratory protocols as prescribed.
- Cleans, maintains, and ensures proper functionality of equipment. Troubleshoots equipment as necessary and identifies the need for service and/or repair.
- Educates and instructs patients in purpose, technique, self-care, goal of therapy, and disease management.
- Facilitates clinical problem solving and collaborates with other departments to provide education on managing patients.
- Under physician direction, the respiratory therapist must be able to adapt and comply to policies and procedures for a variety of different service areas, perform tasks and/or special duties as required by assignment and maintain performance standards and organizational behaviors.
- Demonstrates effective communication, feedback, and conflict resolution skills. Provides clear, concise, timely, and accurate patient handoff.
- Promotes a culture of safety by recognizing and applying proper safety measures to prevent patient harm. Reports patient safety events and near misses in a timely manner. Seeks to identify potential safety issues and assists in the implementation of corrective actions.
- Teaches, educates, and precepts new teammates, orientees, and students.
- Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served. Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs.
Licensure, Registration, and/or Certification Required:
- Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) license issued by the state in which the team member practices.
- Active Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential issued by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) within 12 months OR active Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) credential issued by the NBRC if credential received prior to January 1, 2023.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA).

Education Required:
Graduate from an accredited respiratory care program, with a minimum of an associate degree.
Experience Required:
No experience required.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:
- Effective organizational, interpersonal and problem-solving skills.

- Proficient computer skills, use of e-mail and electronic medical record systems.
- Excellent communication (written and verbal), listening and interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrates human relation skills with the ability to develop rapport and maintain positive, professional relationships with a variety of patients, team members, and physicians. Ability to take initiative and work collaboratively with others.
- Demonstrates time management skills with an ability to multi-task and prioritize in an environment with frequent interruptions.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
- Operates all equipment necessary to perform the job.
- Must be able to lift 50 lb object from knee to waist.
- Must be able to lift 50 lb from floor to waist height occasionally.
- Must be able to lift 40 lb at waist height and carry it across various distances.
- Must be able to lift 20 lb from waist to overhead.
- Must be able to push/pull while utilizing 30# of force occasionally for long distances.
- Must demonstrate stand-pivot transfer from bed to chair.
- Must perform sliding transfer of 150 lbs. person on a sheet across 2 feet with a second person.
- Must utilize safe body mechanics at all times.

- Ensures safe patient handling, movement, and transport, utilizing proper body mechanics, equipment, and infection prevention practices.
- Operates emergency vehicles in a safe, courteous, and compliant manner, adhering to organizational driving policies and applicable traffic laws during emergency and non-emergency responses.
- Completes accurate, timely, and legible clinical documentation, including patient care reports, treatment records, charge capture, and non-transport documentation, in accordance with departmental and regulatory standards.
- Communicates effectively with patients, family members, healthcare providers, public safety partners, and receiving facilities to ensure continuity of care and appropriate handoff.
- Maintains readiness of vehicles, equipment, and supplies, reporting deficiencies and ensuring compliance with inspection, maintenance, and restocking requirements.
- Demonstrates professional conduct and teamwork, serving as a clinical resource to Emergency Medical Services personnel and supporting a culture of safety, respect, and accountability.

Licensure, Registration, and/or Certification Required:
- Current, active, and unencumbered Georgia Paramedic License issued by the Georgia Office of Emergency Medical Services and Trauma required and must be maintained without lapse.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications required and must be maintained without lapse.
- Valid Georgia Driver’s License required, with a driving record that meets organizational motor vehicle and hospital driving policy requirements.
- Must meet organizational requirements for criminal background screening, licensure verification, and ongoing eligibility to practice.
Education Required:
- Prerequisite education requirements are validated by the Georgia Office of Emergency Medical Services and Trauma as part of the Paramedic licensure process.
Experience Required:
- Minimum of one (1) year of experience functioning in a Paramedic role or equivalent advanced life support environment required.
- Any variation or exception to this experience requirement must be reviewed and approved by the Director of Emergency Medical Services or the Human Resources Business Partner (HRBP) with purview over the service line.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:
- Knowledge of advanced life support protocols, emergency medical procedures, and pre-hospital patient care standards.
- Ability to perform rapid and accurate patient assessment, clinical decision-making, and intervention in high-acuity, time-sensitive environments.
- Demonstrated skill in advanced airway management, medication administration, cardiac monitoring, and defibrillation within scope of practice.
- Ability to exercise sound judgment, initiative, and independent action within the framework of established protocols and medical direction.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

Preferred Job Requirements
Preferred Certification/License/Registration
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification.
- Prehospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) or International Trauma Life Support (ITLS) certification.
- NREMT-Paramedic certification is preferred but not required, as Georgia Paramedic licensure serves as the controlling credential for practice.
Preferred Education
- Completion of additional nursing coursework beyond foundational requirements.
Preferred Experience
- Experience in high-volume 9-1-1 response, hospital-based Emergency Medical Services operations, or service delivery within a Level I Trauma Center environment.
- Experience working in integrated, interdisciplinary health system environments, including collaboration with emergency departments, trauma teams, nursing, physicians, and ancillary services.
Preferred Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
- Demonstrated ability to function effectively in high-acuity emergency situations with minimal supervision.
- Ability to support team-based care, mentorship, and informal clinical guidance.

At Houston Methodist, the Registered Nurse (RN) II position is a licensed staff nurse, an experienced clinician, functions at the Competent to Proficient stage of Benner's model of clinical practice. - Performs cardiac echo studies while ensuring precise and accurate data is transmitted for physician completion.
- Provides care for the physical needs of patients when conducting the cardiac echo studies. Educates patients who require inpatient or outpatient echo exams by providing explanations of purpose and techniques used during the exam. Proactively identifies issues and how to address them for optimum outcomes.
- Provides direct assistance to physicians and other health care team members during cardiac echo studies including, patient preparation before procedures and performs proper sterile techniques as indicated in support of the procedure.

- Identifies and recognizes cardiac structures accurately, including: calculate valve area, pressure gradients and ejection fraction when performing echo studies. Confirms the quality of the study is concise and clear to optimize best images for the patient care team and interpreting physician.
- Identifies abnormal findings when performing exams or processing data and takes corrective action or communicates immediately, when appropriate, to proper personnel for the best results.
- Maintains proper sterile techniques for procedures, regularly practices aseptic techniques, and ensures compliance with infection control procedures. Complies with job, department and hospital safety standards, practices and policies.
- Ensures all patient care equipment has had QC performed as required and is in safe working order prior to use. Reports any malfunctions to management and regularly practices preventive maintenance procedures; calls for service if needed.

- Assists RN with daily care of patients including bathing, oral hygiene, feeding, activity orders and ambulation which may include use of therapeutic assistive devices, proper positioning, range of motion and special transferring as indicated. - Compiles necessary chart forms for admissions, transfers, discharges and expirations. Obtains appropriate copies of medical records for transfers to nursing homes and other health care facilities. Verifies medical records contain complete and accurate patient demographic information, patient identification and registration in the medical record, including appropriate level of care.
- Establishes and maintains positive customer relations and contributes to a harmonious work environment. Quickly and courteously acknowledges requests, responds to call lights, demonstrates proper phone etiquette and fosters communication between the health care team.
- Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served. Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the department's policies and procedures. Age-specific information is developed further in the departmental job standards.
Licensure, Registration, and/or Certification Required:
- Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) needs to be obtained within 45 days, and
- Nurse Aide in good standing as indicated with the State Registry in which the team member practices.
Education Required:
- Certificate of General Educational Development (GED) or High School Equivalency Diploma (HSED), or
- High School Graduate.

- Basic computer skills.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
- Must be able to sit, stand, walk, lift, squat, bend, twist, and reach above shoulders during the work shift.
- Must be able to:
- lift up to 50 lbs. from floor to waist.
- lift up to 20 lbs. over the head.
- carry up to 40 lbs. a reasonable distance.
- Must be able to:
- push/pull with 30 lbs. of force.
- perform a sliding transfer of 150 lbs. with a second person present.
- Will be required to use foot pedals on carts or machines.
- Must have functional vision and hearing.
- Will be exposed to mechanical, electrical, chemical, and radiation hazards as well as blood and body fluids on a continuous basis; therefore, protective clothing must be worn as necessary.
