Sentara is currently hiring a Patient Care Technician to work at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital on the 3 West Ortho/Joint Unit.
Hours/Shift:
Full-time, dayshift. Approximately 7am to 7pm
Department/Position Overview:
3 West Ortho is a 12-bed unit that accommodates a variety of post operative surgical procedures including total hip, knees, shoulders, ankles & spine. Being that most of our patients are admitted via elective procedure it makes the patient population a joy as they are often very thankful for our staff & have an anticipated plan of care managing pain, physical therapy & monitoring post operative complications. We enforce more independence by promoting mobility which decreases the amount of total care patients we have which is also a bonus for our small unit.
Patient Care Technicians are unlicensed staff members who are accountable to, and work under the direct supervision of a professional nurse to implement delegated aspects of nursing care. Provide patient care, support the admissions and discharge process, and comply with patient safety practices under the direction of the professional nurse. Observe patients' physical, mental, and emotional conditions and report any change to the nurse.
EducationHigh School Diploma or Equivalent
Certification/Licensure
- American Health Associate BLS Certification required within 90 days of hire.
- Minimum requirements: Must have one of the following
- Sentara Care Partner Certification Program, or
- Successful completion of the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), or
- National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA), or
- National Patient Care Technician (NCPCT), or
- Completion of US Navy Hospital Corps School, or
- Emergency Services to include EMR, EMS, EMT, AEMT and Paramedic, or
- Current student enrolled in a clinical program (beyond prerequisites) having completed at least one semester of RN, LPN, RT or PT, or
- Current work experience within last three years as a PCT or Nursing Assistant.
ExperienceOne year of prior health care experience preferred.

Leverage the use of technology to enhance patient care in the hospital and provide support to nurses at the bedside. Virtual RNs can support the team at the bedside to alleviate the workload and provide greater satisfaction for both the patients and the nursing staff. Major Responsibilities:
- Prepares and rooms the patient for exam by obtaining vital signs and documenting/updating pertinent health information (i.e. chief complaint, allergies, medications).
- Performs laboratory procedures (i.e. strep test, wound culture, specimen collection, etc.) using principles of aseptic technique and standard precautions / infection control guidelines.
- Assists the physician/provider with procedures and surgeries such as pelvic exams, allergy scratch testing, EMG, cautery, colposcopy, etc.
- Administers medications, under physician/provider orders, including: immunizations, antibiotics, pain medications, vitamins, topical agents, and insulin. With limitations, initiates, maintains and discontinues IV therapy; administering selected fluids with pre-mixed medications.
- Provides basic patient education on the performance of tasks, skills, treatment and self-care.
- Follows through with necessary procedure or test requests, prescription refills, new appointment times and referrals to other facilities or services.
- Refers questions to registered nurses and physicians/providers per scope of practice guidelines and relays information back to patient as directed.
- Communicates with physicians and other members of the health care team. Documents and communicates accurate and timely information regarding patient conditions.
- Performs advanced clinical tasks or skills such as removal of sutures and staples, catheterization, audiograms, laboratory procedures (throat/nose culture, drug screen, phlebotomy - butterfly, venous access, heel stick), EKG, spirometry, Holter monitor application, casting, complex wound care, etc., with demonstrated competency and under clinical supervision.
- Organizes and prepares exam rooms, lab and work areas including: cleaning, stocking, ordering supplies, and maintaining equipment. Performs various patient positioning and transporting duties, which require lifting and pushing/pulling, while utilizing proper technique.
- Completes routine maintenance and quality monitoring of clinic equipment using appropriate technique when cleaning, sterilizing and caring for instruments and other equipment.
- Participates in patient centered initiatives, care management, performance and quality improvement activities.
- Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served.
- Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the department's policies and procedures. This position is NOT Remote and is located at the Sentara Independence office in Virginia Beach, VA.
Leverage the use of technology to enhance patient care in the hospital and provide support to nurses at the bedside. Virtual RNs can support the team at the bedside to alleviate the workload and provide greater satisfaction for both the patients and the nursing staff. They handle administrative tasks that take significant time but don’t require hands-on care. This improves workflow while ensuring patients are fully informed about the care they have received.
Virtual nurses are not a replacement for bedside nurses, instead they serve as an additional member of the hospital care team. Bedside nurses and virtual nurses work together to ensure that patients continue to receive the safest and highest quality of care. Patients communicate with virtual nurses via a HIPAA compliant audio-visual device in the hospital room.
Perform nursing duties via video call with this innovative care model from the Virtual Care hub call center such as admissions, discharges, patient teaching, medication reconciliation, and much more.

Position Summary:
The pharmacist-specialty is a hybrid clinical pharmacist and sterile compounding lead position. The pharmacist – specialty must:
- Be proficient in accurately verifying medication orders and dispensing medications
- Assures safe, effective, and economical use of medications
- Reviews and evaluates medication orders
- Monitors patient medication therapy
- Effectively and appropriately communicates with providers
- Safe storage, preparation, dispensing of medications
- Provides medication counseling for patients and drug information for providers
- Participates in medication event reporting
- Offers leadership to pharmacy technicians and precepts students and/or residents (at least 1 annually) and new hires
- Facilitate inventory control
- Offers drug information support to pharmacy staff
- Consistently supports daily pharmacy workflow by answering operational questions
- Covering on call when necessary
- Be proficient in the following clinical pharmacy services
- Consult services including medication reconciliation
- Renal dose adjustment and vancomycin monitoring
- Active participation in interdisciplinary rounds
- Contributes to development or review of clinical or operational policies as assigned
- Active participation in local or regional multidisciplinary or pharmacy specific committee or workgroup
- Be proficient in the following responsibilities of USP 797 Designated Person
- Ensure overall compliance with USP 797, applicable federal and state laws and regulations, accreditation standards and Trinity policies

- Oversight of personnel training and competencies

Experience Requirements:

Pay Range: $56.00 - $72.30
Pay is based on experience, skills, and education. Exempt positions under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) will be paid within the base salary equivalent of the stated hourly rates. The pay range may also vary within the stated range based on location.

Job Duties:
Assesses plans, organizes, performs, and evaluates nursing activities to meet the needs of the patient. Advanced Acute Care Orthopaedics (HFAM6) is a 30 bed private room, post-surgical care, mostly orthopedic, medical/surgical, telemetry unit offering a challenging and professional work environment. Looking for a flexible and fast-paced clinician with Acute Therapy background (preferred), who has true per diem availability. This role will provide coverage to both Auburn and Covington Medical Center locations. Employee should have EPIC experience and be able to work a minimum of 4 dates per month, to include potential weekend rotation. - Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech Pathology (CCC-SLP) from the American Speech-Hearing-Language Association OR be in the process of completing a Clinical Fellowship Year (CFY) with supervision by a CCC-SLP in accordance with standards defined by the ASHA
- Licensed as a Speech Language Pathologist in the State of Washington or holding an interim permit
- Current BLS Certification required
- Previous Experience as a Speech Language Pathologist preferred
