Job Description:
The Emergency Department Tech/Unit Coordinator provides clinical patient care support in a caring, safe, and efficient manner, under the direction of a RN. The employee also performs other functions including clerical duties, admitting and discharging patients in multiple computer systems, phlebotomy, EKG lead placement, trauma care, and respiratory functions.
Essential Functions:
- Measures and documents intake and output, heights and weights, and vital signs
- Applies, monitors, and documents restraint usage
- Performs safety checks per standard on high risk patients
- Responsible for obtaining timed cardiac markers on patients with life threatening heart disease
- Verifies all patients are registered by an admission specialist before discharge, corrects any errors in systems
- Performs and documents patient mobility and exercise, and comfort, rest, and sleep care needs
- Performs and documents patient hygiene, grooming, and dressing, skin and nail care, dietary, and toileting and elimination needs
- Transports patients, lab work, specimens, and blood
- Organizes equipment and supplies; assembles equipment; cleans and disinfects equipment; maintains disinfectant solutions per infection control policies; communicates with bio medical engineering for equipment malfunctions
- Stocks trauma room in preparation for trauma patients
- Applies non-sterile hot/cold packs/compresses, bandages, elastic stockings, etc. and documents their usage
- Safely and correctly operates equipment (i.e. beds, wheelchairs, stretchers, hypo/hyperthermia unit, mechanical lifts, bed scales)
- Performs venipuncture for specimen collection under the direction of the RN; appropriately labels and ensures delivery to the Clinical Laboratory
- Performs routine 12-lead electrocardiography testing under the direction of the RN
- Assists the RN or RT with the placement of nasal canula
- Assists MDs and NP/PAs with procedure set-ups including sterile fields
- Transcribes and enters physician orders, department orders and messages accurately into the computer; writes legibly and transcribes orders accurately; pages consults as needed; locates providers for consults, as needed
- Sets up admission charts and disassembles discharged and transferred charts, ensuring completion
- Performs safety checks on equipment and performs QA/QC on point of care testing machines
- Updates the patients file and hospital billing system with information necessary to complete the collection cycle; obtains patient/guarantor signatures for the purpose of release of information
- Ensures that assignment of patient’s medical record number is accurate according to patient information received
- Ensures that the ordering, attending, referring, and primary care physicians are documented in the hospital computer system (SMS) correctly
- Provides care/support to patients with orthopedic injuries i.e. splint, crutch training and assists physician.
- Performs wound care irrigation
Other Functions:
- Responds appropriately in lifesaving situations
- Handles desk communications properly and promptly, including responding immediately to intercom, pages and routing of messages to appropriate person
- Takes all necessary steps to ensure safeguarding of patients clothing and valuables
- Keeps track of all equipment and supplies used; notifies appropriate persons regarding broken or lost equipment and missing supplies
- Adheres to Universal precaution, infection control, OSHA, and other regulatory policies and procedures; maintains safe work practices and follows facility safety procedures
- Assists with admitting, physical examination, transferring, and discharging patients
- Receives oncoming and gives off-going reports
- Assists in orientation of new employees, as necessary
- Uses A.I.D.E.T. when communicating with patients, families, visitors, co-workers and customers
- Maintains compliance with all company policies, procedures and standards of conduct
- Complies with HIPAA privacy and security requirements to maintain confidentiality at all times
- Performs other duties as assigned
Additional Job Description:
Education:
- High School diploma or GED/equivalent (required)
- Completion of a recognized Clinical Assistant, Medical Assistant or EMT Training Program, or Nursing Students who have completed Fundamentals of Nursing Course from an accredited school of nursing (preferred)
Experience:
- Previous experience in ED (preferred)
Certification:
- Certification as a Nursing Assistant (C.N.A), Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) or Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) (preferred)
- Basic Life Support (BLS) accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA)(required)

About the Unit:
The Intensive Care unit (ICU) is a 20 bed critical care unit specializing in neurologic care. Staff working in ICU will encounter a variety of nursing needs from stroke, post-op neurosurgery, ventricular drains, abdominal pressure monitoring, CRRT to hypothermia.
Job Duties:
The ICU nurse assesses and identifies patient needs and implements appropriate interventions for the patient. The ICU Nurse establishes and maintains a plan for the delivery of nursing care; assures that nursing care interventions and activities are directed to resolve problems; and performs technical aspects of care competently. ICU nurses must have strong critical thinking skills. The critical care nurse acts as a family and patient resource to guide them through all stages of the patient’s critical care journey.
Minimum Education, Training, and Experience
1. Active Kentucky License
2. BCLS Required within 90 days of employment.
3. ACLS will be required within six months for experienced staff nurses and within one year for new graduate nurses.

Critical Care Mixed Acuity Unit
Mixed Acuity Unit is both a critical care and telemetry unit specializing in medical critical care. Staff in this department will receive both critical care and telemetry training and will see the whole realm of nursing. Care ranges from young adult through geriatric patient population.
Job Summary
Registered Nurse implements the nursing process for each assigned to his/her care regardless of age (i.e. infancy to geriatric) and is responsible for the patient’s care consistent with the Kentucky Nursing Laws and organizational policies and procedures. The registered nurse promotes positive patient outcomes and the delivery of quality patient care and initiates change through active involvement in the unit-based and hospital shared governance councils while contributing to a healthy professional practice environment.
National Professional Nursing Standards serve as guidelines for nurses as they utilize critical thinking and clinical reasoning skills and exercise appropriate nursing judgment. The registered nurse collaborates with the inter-professional team to enhance patient outcomes. The registered nurse serves as a role model through actively participating in the process of continuous professional development and lifelong learning. Utilizes the Nursing Process as the framework for providing care.
