The Clinic Lab Assistant performs phlebotomy and laboratory support services in an outpatient clinic setting. Responsibilities include greeting patients, verifying orders, collecting and processing specimens, and preparing lab orders and reports. This role ensures quality and accuracy in accordance with regulatory standards and organizational mission, values, and performance expectations.
- Knows, understands, incorporates, and demonstrates the Trinity Health Mission, Vision, and Values in behaviors, practices, and decisions.
- Performs phlebotomy procedures (venipuncture and capillary) and collects other specimens following proper protocols.
- Prepares, labels, and processes specimens, ensuring accurate documentation and adherence to regulatory and infection control guidelines (e.g., CLIA, COLA, OSHA).
- Conducts waived and routine lab testing; reports and documents the result in the electronic health record, including critical values. Operates, maintains, and troubleshoots lab equipment; performs and documents quality control and proficiency testing.
- Verifies lab orders and medical necessities; completes ABNs and corrects billing codes as needed.
- Accurately enters and manages data in the Electronic Health Record (EHR); reviews and corrects billing reports.
- Maintains supply inventory; stocks areas appropriately and communicates needs to supervisor.
- Provides patient-centered service by communicating test procedures, results, and follow-up instructions clearly and compassionately.
- Assists with clerical duties including faxing, copying, filing, scheduling, and answering phone calls.
- Supports cross-coverage needs, within scope, throughout clinic/lab areas.
- Serves as a resource for colleagues and patients.
- Follows all safety, infection control, and universal precaution standards; maintains a clean and organized work area.
- Deliver patient care through patient preparation, vital sign collection, and documentation. Assist with various procedures, exams, and diagnostic equipment (e.g., tympanometry, spirometry).
- Maintain aseptic techniques during preparation, procedures, and medication administration.
- Other duties as needed and assigned by the manager.
- Maintains a working knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and local laws and regulations, Trinity Health’s Organizational Integrity Program, Standards of Conduct, as well as other policies and procedures in order to ensure adherence in a manner that reflects honest, ethical, and professional behavior.
Schedule: 8am-4pm or 8:30am-4:30pm
General Requirements:
- High school diploma or equivalent (GED) required.
- Must be at least 16 years old.
- Completion of medical terminology or phlebotomy training preferred.
- Previous laboratory or phlebotomy experience preferred.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from American Heart Association or Red Cross required within 30 days of hire; must be maintained
- . Mandatory Reporter training for Child and Dependent Adult Abuse required within 3–6 months of hire; must be maintained.

Job Summary
Collaborates with the physician and healthcare team in the delivery of patient care, utilizing the nursing process. Provides professional nursing care to patients, including conducting nursing assessments, assisting with exams and treatment, patient education, and maintenance of medical records. BSN prepared. CEN within one year of hire.

Minimum Qualifications
Education: Graduate of an accredited School of Professional Nursing; Bachelors of Nursing preferred
Licenses/Certifications:
- Current State of Texas license or temporary/compact license to practice professional nursing
- Certified in Basic Life Support

Principal Accountabilities
- Delivers safe and appropriate care to patients, according to the nursing skills inventory and the age and needs of the patient/population served.
- Coordinates the planning for the delivery of nursing care with an interdisciplinary team and administers appropriate clinical decisions in the delivery of patient care.
- Collaborates with, directs, and may delegate to the healthcare team in the attainment of positive outcomes based on data, research, evidence, and professional standards of care.
- Coordinates treatment plans; develops/implements discharge and/or transfer plans.
- Participates in a systemic, interdisciplinary, and ongoing evaluation of programs, process improvement and desired client-centered outcomes.
- Considers the diverse needs of each patient through the entire continuum of care, providing and ensuring the highest level of service according to established service standards, optimizing the patient experience.
- Adheres to all regulatory and Texas Board of Nursing standards.
- Ensures safe care to patients, staff and visitors; adheres to all Memorial Hermann policies, procedures, and standards, being a good steward of resources, including time management, supply management, productivity and quality of service.
- Promotes individual professional growth and development by meeting requirements for mandatory/continuing education and skills competency; supports department-based goals which contribute to the success of the organization; may serve as preceptor, mentor and resource to less experienced staff.

• Schedules patients for interventional radiology, diagnostic imaging and special procedure exams.

This position assists a nurse manager in managing daily nursing activities within a nursing department. Essential Functions:

- Proficient in the procurement of blood samples via venous and capillary techniques, from patients ranging in age from infant to geriatric.
- Utilizes use of the Laboratory Information System for activating, ordering, and resulting laboratory orders from providers and to result laboratory tests.
- Educates patients in the proper collection of specimens such as urine, stool and sputum.
- Reviews orders from providers, maintaining accuracy in ordering tests; occasionally must call providers' offices to obtain orders.
- Processes specimens in the appropriate way, including looking up specimen requirements, centrifuging and separating as necessary, and storing at the appropriate temperature to maintain sample integrity and testing acceptability.
- Readies specimens for transfer to reference laboratories, including completing the required paperwork for transfer and ensuring STAT specimens are processed and transported in a timely manner, including calling a STAT courier and completing the necessary paperwork for the transfer.
- Performs both waived and moderately complex CLIA testing in hematology, urinalysis, and serologiy areas under the guidance and supervision of an MLT or MT.
- Keeps accurate records, such as temperature monitoring, quality control for all laboratory testing and daily, weekly and monthly maintenance.
- Works together as a team in a fast paced environment to care for our patients while demonstrating Genesis Health System's standards of behavior.
General Requirements:
- Medical Assistant, Certified Phlebotomist or other healthcare studies preferred.
