ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
PEOPLE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Communicates with staff from the interdisciplinary health care team concerning patient safety to improve outcomes and the safe transition of care through effective assignment and shift handoffs, using a structured format.
- Demonstrates teamwork by responding positively and respectfully to requests for assistance. Collaborates with department representatives to foster healthy relationships in the work environment. Makes contributions to the work effort as a whole and uses problem resolution effectively.
- Identifies and immediately reports failures of equipment for disinfection, sterilization, and safety monitoring of the work environment.
SERVICE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Performs sorting, inspection, and decontamination/sterilization of personal protective equipment (PPE), medications, medical and pharmaceutical equipment, and other physical spaces by safely following prescribed manufacturer instructions and institutional policies and procedures.
- Provides timely turn around for equipment requiring decontamination/sterilization, including rounding on units to collect and return equipment needing decontamination/sterilization.
- Handles sterilants and other cleaning supplies in accordance with prescribed manufacturer instructions and institutional policies and procedures.
- Organizes workload utilizing available work time by assisting others and performing additional task as needed. Delivers consistent and reliable productivity between the assigned work space and the units we service.
QUALITY/SAFETY ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Utilizes appropriate personal protective equipment required to disinfect/sterilize potentially infectious medical equipment for reuse in accordance with manufacturer instructions and institutional policies and procedures.
- Utilizes all department equipment, chemicals, and supplies according to manufacturers’ instructions for use and department policies and protocols.
- Utilizes all provided safety equipment to monitor workspace for disinfectant/sterilant levels to ensure safety following manufacturer instructions and institutional policies and procedures.
- Ensures, through visual product inspection and quality control indicators, that all disinfected/sterilized equipment passes institutional standards for effective sterilization.
FINANCE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Self-motivated to independently manage time effectively and prioritize daily tasks, cleaning the workstation at the end of each shift, and minimizing incidental overtime. Utilizes time between heavy workloads efficiently and helps other team members.
- Uses department resources efficiently to ensure thorough documentation of completed work, recording productivity and sterility monitoring metrics following established institutional standards.
GROWTH/INNOVATION ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Identifies own learning needs, consults with healthcare team experts and seeks continuing education opportunities to meet those needs. Seeks opportunities to expand learning beyond baseline competencies with a focus on continual development.

Minimum Qualifications
Education: High School diploma or GED, preferred

Experience / Knowledge / Skills:
One (1) year clinical work experience or graduate of an approved medical trade school program
Principal Accountabilities
Performs daily lab operations including sample processing, result reporting/distribution, personnel direction (as appropriate), and clerical duties as required to maintain efficient work flow, at a competent level and according to the age/needs of the patient/population served, communicating special circumstances to appropriate personnel.
Performs at least 50% of time in other job functions such as supply chain management, project management, and providing direction and oversight of others within assigned area.
Interacts with hospital personnel, volunteers, physicians and patients as to specimens and orders coming into the Laboratory Services and with sensitivity to their needs.
Complies with policies, procedures, and initiatives of laboratory services, the hospital, and system; understands, communicates and complies with standards and conditions set forth by various governmental and accrediting agencies including TJC, CAP, AABB, CMS, HCFA and CLIA.
Performs duties in a manner to promote quality patient care and customer service/satisfaction, while promoting safety, cost efficiently and a commitment to the PI process.
Gains/maintains functional knowledge of system computers as required by job assignment.
Ensures safe care to patients, staff and visitors; adheres to all Memorial Hermann policies, procedures, and standards within budgetary specifications including time management, supply management, productivity and quality of service.
Promotes individual professional growth and development by meeting requirements for mandatory/continuing education and skills competency; supports department-based goals which contribute to the success of the organization; serves as preceptor, mentor and resource to less experienced staff.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Performs pre-analytical specimen processing: Receives patient specimens from within the institute and outside institutions.
- Becomes familiar with patient and specimen requirements; stores and transports specimens according to procedures; ensure specimen integrity is preserved at all times.

- Performs various quality checks to ensure all requests are accurate before dispensing the specimens to the appropriate performing lab.
- Responds to telephone inquiries to assist providers, nurses and other caregivers with lab test, test requirement and result inquiries.

Position Summary and Purpose
The employee assists the anesthesia provider in the acquisition, preparation, and application of the anesthesia equipment and supplies required for the safe administration of anesthesia. They participate in safe, efficient and cost-effective anesthesia care. The employee provides support in anesthesia for routine and complex surgical and non-surgical cases by assisting in the preparation and maintenance of patient monitoring devices, anesthesia delivery systems, medicines, and supplies before, during, and after anesthesia cases. The employee may perform certain complex diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, at the direction of the anesthesia staff. The employee maintains inventory of supplies in rooms, cleans and stocks rooms after surgeries, and verifies drugs and supplies are not outdated. The employee may set-up drips, A-Lines and Central Lines. This employee uses sterile techniques to gown and glove, set up lines and assist the anesthesia provider with placement of lines in patient. The employee helps position the patient for surgery, assists provider with intubation and assists provider with extuation. The employee helps the provider transport patient to recovery.
Essential Functions:
• Directs ordering anesthesia supplies and prepares anesthesia equipment and supplies for the operating rooms
• Assists in maintaining equipment in proper working order, cleans and returns cleaned equipment to its proper place and stocks surgical rooms
• Assists anesthesia provider and promptly responds to page for anesthesia turnover between cases
• Responds to alarm systems to assist with trouble shooting of equipment
• Assists with patient pick up and blood product pick-up and runs ABG’s / blood glucose under the direction of an anesthesia provider

Education & Experience:
- Associate degree preferred.
- Previous experience as a Medical Lab Technician preferred.
Licensure, Certification and/or Registrations:
- MLT (ASCP) or equivalent certification required.
- Successful completion of a NAACLS approved Medical Technician program preferred.
Essential Functions:
- Adheres to the general hospital standards to promote a cooperative work environment by utilizing communication skills, interpersonal relationship and team building.
- Ensures accuracy and timeliness of patient laboratory test results. Performs procedures efficiently and as indicated in the procedure manual with minimal supervision and within the required turn-around-time without compromising quality. Responds to STATs immediately. Follows workflow processes according to documented procedures. Documents and communications are reviewed in a timely manner and are appropriately referenced and applied.
- Ensures quality of test results by following defined Quality Control (QC) and Quality Assurance (QA) procedures. Follows QC procedures and evaluates QC results prior to reporting patient results. Test results are reviewed for accuracy and are promptly reported in the LIS. Demonstrates the ability to perform and accurately document all procedures related to critical values, technical limit failures and QA activities. Demonstrates the ability to recognize a test or reporting system problem, troubleshoot and resolve if possible, seeking advice and escalating as needed. Performs appropriate patient procedures in accordance with age-specific guidelines for the age groups served.
- Ensures safety and compliance: Patients are accurately identified using two appropriate patient identifiers prior to sample collection. Patient samples are accurately labeled and identified throughout the testing process from sample collection through testing and storage. Misidentified samples are identified and responded to appropriately, notifying all appropriate staff. Results are reported for the correct specimen. Protects self, coworkers and facility by following approved policies and procedures to prevent the spread of blood borne and/or airborne diseases. Uses engineering controls, work practice controls and appropriate personal protective equipment as indicated in the section task list.
- Maintains appropriate education to accomplish work objectives and maintain current certifications as applicable. Demonstrates responsibility for professional growth by seeking out learning opportunities available within the department, organization, and community to increase knowledge and education. Minimum of 4 hours of continuing education/year required in addition to annual in-service requirements.
- Ensure productive and efficient operations of the section and department. Coordinates activities and effectively communicates with others within and outside of lab section to accomplish work objectives through positive and professional interactions contributing to collegiality, teamwork and overall section productivity. Demonstrates the ability to handle multiple tasks at one time and performs work without allowing personal situation/perspectives to compromise lab operations. Adjusts schedule to meet changes in workload or at the direction of the manager.

Essential Functions:
- Collects and/or processes patient blood obtained by venipuncture and/or capillary puncture timely and accurate.
- Processes nonblood patient specimens in a timely and accurate fashion.
- Assists in specimen preparation, receipt, and transport of patient specimens.
- Performs patient registration.
- Provides phone support for patient care areas in a polite and supportive manner.
- Maintains competency with hospital and laboratory information systems as needed to perform job duties.
- Trains new team members and/or students in the department including any standard work processes applicable to the work area.
- Receives lab orders from providers, prepares necessary documentation, and performs all routine laboratory tests.
- Maintains necessary documentation for all tests according to standards and labeling all specimens following set standards. Maintains knowledge of specimen collection devices and tubes.
- Maintains equipment, keeps area clean, stocks supplies and keeps work space organized.
- Practices sterile technique and prevents cross contamination. Handles blood and body fluids and deals with infectious patients.
- Performs minor laboratory procedures accurately, precisely, and efficiently under minimal supervision including chemistry, hematology, urinalysis, and immunology.
- Perform phlebotomy through venous and capillary puncture following established procedures in accordance with age specific considerations of patients. Observes strict principles of antisepsis to prevent infection of patient and contamination of specimens.
- Receives and collects urine specimens to perform all routine tests.
- Performs specimen preparation for all procedures/tests.
- Maintains supplies inventory communicating needs to supervisor.
- Reports varying in-house test results in addition to all abnormal findings to clinical staff.
- Complies with all policies and OSHA regulations related to safety, cleanliness, and infection control. Practices sterile technique and prevents cross contamination. Handles blood and body fluids and deals with infectious patients.
- Follows general safety procedures and utilizes PPE appropriately.
Education, Experience and Certifications
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Certification in phlebotomy preferred for facilities where phlebotomy is an assigned duty.
Skills/Qualifications:
- Knowledge of laboratory techniques to perform minor laboratory tests.
- Knowledge of laboratory equipment and testing to operate, clean, and sterilize.
- Knowledge of appropriate medical terminology to communicate with staff.

Physical Requirements
- Works in a fast-paced clinical environment.
