The Chesapeake Humane Society (CHS) has two facilities in Chesapeake. The Battlefield Blvd location is our veterinary clinic, offering preventative veterinary care, spay/neuter surgery, dentals, heartworm treatment, various surgical procedures, and illness exams. Our clinic services support our shelter pets, other regional shelters, rescue groups, and public clients.
The New Mill Drive location is our animal shelter and crisis boarding facility. Our adoptable pets include dogs, cats, and small animals. Our shelter does not accept owner surrenders or strays, so the majority of our pets are transferred in from our regional shelter partners.
Our Mission is to promote the welfare of companion animals through programs and initiatives that reduce pet overpopulation, increase adoptions, and encourage responsible pet guardianship through affordable pet care.
Our Vision is to help pets and the people who love them find each other and stay together.
*Reporting Relationship: *Clinic Manager and Medical Director
*Status*: Full-time, Hourly, Non-exempt
*Location:* 312 Battlefield Blvd N., Chesapeake, VA 23320 (primary)
*Summary*
The Chesapeake Humane Society operates a low-cost, high-volume clinic, offering preventive veterinary care, spay/neuter surgery, dentals, and various surgical procedures. The Licensed Veterinary Technician performs some animal medical procedures while providing support to the Medical Director and Associate Veterinarians of the Chesapeake Humane Society (CHS). The incumbent shall uphold and abide by clinic and shelter protocols as set by the Medical Director.
*Duties and Responsibilities*
* Interpret medical histories and relay pertinent information to the Medical Director
* Safely and humanely restrain animals for medical procedures
* Administer vaccinations, microchips, sedatives, and pre-anesthetic and anesthetic drugs under the supervision of the Medical Director and Associate Veterinarians
* Perform dental exams, create dental estimates, and perform dental cleanings which include taking dental radiographs and performing single-rooted tooth extractions
* Perform diagnostic services such as bloodwork, ear swabs, and skin scrapings for veterinarians to interpret, document results, and communicate to clients or Client Service Representatives
* Recover pets from anesthesia and if needed perform CPR under the supervision of the attending veterinarian
* Provide post-operative, vaccination, and microchipping counseling and answer client inquiries, forwarding to Medical Director or Associate Veterinarians as appropriate
* Reconcile controlled substance log at the end of business
* Clean and sanitize veterinary equipment, surgical tools, animal enclosures, workspace, lobby, and break room as assigned
* Ensure all supply areas are stocked and report deficiencies to lead LVT and lead VA
* Assist Medical Director in providing oversight, support, and training for Veterinary Assistants
* Engage visitors in non-confrontational, educational conversations regarding animal care, surrender, sheltering policies, etc
* Work cooperatively with all staff to promote the CHS mission
* Perform other duties as assigned
*Skills and Educational Requirements*
* High school diploma
* Current license to practice as a Licensed Veterinary Technician in the state of Virginia
* Understanding of veterinary medicine, ability to administer vaccinations, microchips, and controlled substances, ability to collect samples for diagnostics, and ability to perform animal restraint as appropriate for an LVT
* Confidence using computer systems and learning new software
* Ability to provide quality customer service in a high-volume, stressful environment
* Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate with and relate to people of all age groups across a wide spectrum of the community
* Willingness to discuss euthanasia, open-admission sheltering, and surrender of pets in a non-judgmental, non-confrontational, fact-based manner
* Ability to express organizational standpoints when serving as a CHS representative
* Ability to handle confidential or sensitive information with discretion
* Ability to function well independently and as a team member
* Ability to mediate and problem solve in the moment
* Excellent attention to detail; organization skills and ability to multitask
* Strong written and oral communication skills including the ability to educate clients effectively in English
* Preferably, experience in shelter medicine and in high volume spay/neuter clinics
*Physical and Time Demands*

* Ability to work in the presence of animals, wildlife, strong odors, and cleaning solutions
* Ability to stand, walk, bend, and lift and carry materials up to 40 lbs

Here is What Your day May Consist of:
Perform advanced veterinary nursing, including restraint, postoperative care, catheter placement, wound management, and bandaging
Assist veterinarians in emergency procedures, anesthesia, surgical prep, monitoring, and recovery care
Provide emergency care such as CPR, fluid therapy, oxygen administration, and blood transfusions
Conduct diagnostic and lab testing: hematology, cytology, urinalysis, microbiology, and serology
Operate diagnostic equipment: blood pressure monitors, ECG, pulse oximetry, and imaging systems
Triage patients and accurately document condition and treatment
Educate clients on care, treatments, and follow-up needs
Maintain a safe, clean, and organized ER environment
Collaborate with a supportive veterinary team that values communication and teamwork
Here is What You Will Bring to the Position:
Education & Licensure
Associate of Applied Science (AAS) in Veterinary Technology from an accredited program
Active Virginia Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT) license in good standing
Experience
2+ years in emergency veterinary medicine preferred
Skills & Attributes

As a generalist with our second shift medical laboratory team, you’ll work in multiple areas and refine your skills through time spent in blood bank, toxicology, urinalysis, chemistry, hematology, and more! As a member of the laboratory team at Geisinger Medical Center (GMC), you’ll support a 500+ bed Level I trauma and comprehensive stroke center AND perform testing for the entire eight-hospital system. This role will do automated, semi-automated, and manual testing in a fast-paced, collaborative team environment.
With the volume of specimens processed at GMC, you’ll test abnormal specimens daily in addition to completing life-saving routine testing like hemoglobin A1C, lipids, kidney function, drug screens, and volatiles. You’ll also work with state-of-the-art automated testing equipment and support quality control measures, troubleshoot instrumentation, and verify results on front-end processing equipment. This position will also have the opportunity to learn flow cytometry.
Education Qualification and Details
Medical Technologist/Medical Laboratory Scientist:
- Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college/university AND successful completion of an ASCP/NAACLS-accredited Medical Technology program OR;
- Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college/university with a major in biological, chemical, physical or clinical laboratory science AND ASCP categorical certification OR;
- Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college/university with a major in biological, chemical, physical, or clinical laboratory science AND at least two years' experience in a role equivalent to that of a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) in a clinical laboratory
- HEW
Medical Lab Technician:

Sentara Norfolk General Hospital is hiring a Patient Care Technician (PCT) for the Cardiac Procedural and Surgical Unit. This is a Full Time, Day Shift (12-hour shift) position.
Hours: 7AM to 7PM - Three 12-hour shifts (36 hours per week), with rotating weekends and holidays.
Department Overview: This 24-bed unit provides high acuity cardiac care for pre and post cardiac surgery patients to include: bypass surgery, cardiac valve repairs/replacements, and other cardiac based procedures and treatments such as ICD’s and permanent pacemakers. Additionally, this unit provides high acuity care to patients with cardiac arrhythmias, heart failure, and chest pain.
The Patient Care Technician (PCT) provides patient care, supports independent and dependent activities of daily living, vital signs, mobility and ambulation, phlebotomy, point of care testing, EKG testing, peripheral IV removal, specimen collection, and foley catheter insertion and removal, and complies with patient safety practices under the direction of the professional RN nurse. Observes patients' physical, mental, and emotional conditions and documents in a timely and accurate manner while reporting any change to the nurse or medical staff.

Qualifications
Education:
- High School Diploma or Equivalent (Required) AND one of the following is required:
- Sentara Care Partner Certification Program, or
- Successful completion of the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), or
- National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA), or
- National Patient Care Technician (NCPCT), or
- Completion of US Navy Hospital Corps School, or
- Emergency Services to include EMR, EMS, EMT, AEMT and Paramedic, or

Job Description:
May perform a wide variety of advanced patient care duties under the supervision of a Registered Nurse and maintains the patient care and unit environment consistent with the policies, procedures, and practices. Meets the qualifications to provide care for patients in the specific age range on their assigned clinical area.
- Provides enhanced patient care under the direction of the licensed nurse, which may include but is not limited to dressing care, removal of Foley Catheter and peripheral IV.
- Documents in the appropriate sections to create a complete and accurate medical record.
- Identifies, observes, and documents the physical needs of the patient according to established standards. Reports any changes in patient condition to licensed personnel in a timely manner.
- Obtains and maintains the integrity of specimens in accordance with policy and procedure, according to physician order.
- Provides for or assists patients with activities of daily living and fulfills designated and delegated responsibilities for ongoing continuum of care. Includes patient hygiene and changing linens.
- Provides one to one patient safety watch as assigned following established policies and procedures.
- Accurately processes specimens and provides timely transport of the specimen to the laboratory.
- Performs point of care patient testing and point of care instrument maintenance and quality control.
- Assists in problem solving, trouble shooting and taking corrective measures in care and maintenance of equipment and supplies.
- Serves as a preceptor and mentor for new staff and students in a positive manner.
- Performs clerical duties for admissions, transfers, discharges, and deaths according to standards and facilitates patient throughput activities. Transcribes and processes orders according to unit standard.
- Releases and confirms ordered tests to appropriate departments.
- Coordinate's transportation of patients to multiple tests.
- Participates in obtaining and communicating electronic information as pertinent to the nursing unit. Schedules tests, faxes consult, etc.
- Assists in ordering supplies. Stationery items as well as floor stock, patient needs, individual nursing supplies.
- Communicates with food services to ensure appropriate patient diets.
- Operates, problem solves, and takes corrective measures for clerical equipment. To include scheduling maintenance of computers, fax machines, phones, etc.
- Staff have access to non-controlled medications storage and supply areas and can transport non-controlled medications as necessary to meet the needs of the clinic or unit.
- Assists with transporting non-controlled medications to and from Pharmacy and within the unit as needed.
- Assists with transporting blood products to and from Blood Bank as needed.
- Discharge follow up phone calls / coordinating virtual discharge appointment team.
- Support / Assist staff with 5 min Drills and/or Quality Rounds - participate in regulatory readiness as needed.

Job Description:
The Monitoring Technician is responsible for on-going surveillance of patient cardiac monitors on multiple floors and settings. Provides registered nurses and clinicians with immediate notification of any changes in cardiac rhythms. The Monitoring technician completes the admission set-up of telemetry monitors for the clinical units and performs monitor discharge and maintenance. The Monitoring Technician has completed a Cardiac Dysrhythmia Course and successfully passed a rhythm analysis examination.
- Maintains ongoing, high-level surveillance of patients’ cardiac rhythms and notifies nursing and clinicians of any rate and rhythm changes.
- Measures and interprets patients’ heart rhythm and documents on patient rhythm strip every four hours.
- Initiates and discontinues monitoring equipment on admission, transfer, or discharge.
- Performs configuration as necessary.
- Performs clerical duties related to admission, discharge, and documentation of patient information from Central Cardiac Monitoring Room.
- Communicates clearly when receiving information from units or providers.
- Uses clear and complete communication with unit personnel when delivering information about changes in patient rhythm.
- Orients and mentors new staff members.
- Serves as a resource for training and troubleshooting to both the Central Cardiac Monitoring Room and clinical areas.
- Troubleshoots monitors with nursing staff and contacts Clinical Engineering as appropriate.
- Gives report to oncoming shift.
- Prioritizes and organizes work assignment and adjusts priorities based on changing situations.
- Maintains and stocks all designated equipment, including telemetry and monitoring cables.
- Replaces defective equipment and reports failures to Clinical Engineering.
- Adheres to confidentiality of information acquired pertaining to patients, clinicians, employees, and visitors.
- Develops a rapport and cooperative relationship with nursing and clinical staff and responds to questions and requests from healthcare providers.

Sentara is currently hiring a Patient Care Technician to work at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital on the Med/Surg 4 West Unit.
Hours/Shift:
Full-time, night shift. Approximately 7pm to 7am
Department/Position Overview:
4 West is a 24-bed inpatient nursing unit. We provide quality care to adult medical/surgical telemetry patients who are acutely ill or injured. We specialize in post-operative surgical patient care. The most common types of clinical conditions include:
- General surgery inclusive of emergent and elective
- Davinci Robotic surgery for colon, urology, and gyn surgeries
- Urology including TURB, continuous bladder irrigation, stent placement
- Gynecology surgeries inclusive of bladder/colon resections
- Vascular inclusive of amputations, femoral popliteal bypass, fistulas
- Mastectomies and variable staging of breast reconstruction
- Soft tissue traumas inclusive of gunshot/stab wounds, MVAs, chest tubes
Medical population includes:
- Diverticulitis, crohns, ulcerative colitis, colitis, fistulas e.g. colorectal
- Kidney injury, acute and chronic
- Sepsis, pneumonia, asthma, diabetes

Patient Care Technicians are unlicensed staff members who are accountable to, and work under the direct supervision of a professional nurse to implement delegated aspects of nursing care. Provide patient care, support the admissions and discharge process, and comply with patient safety practices under the direction of the professional nurse. Observe patients' physical, mental, and emotional conditions and report any change to the nurse.
Education
High School Diploma or Equivalent
Certification/Licensure
- American Health Associate BLS Certification required within 90 days of hire.
- Minimum requirements: Must have one of the following
- Sentara Care Partner Certification Program, or
- Successful completion of the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), or
- National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA), or
- National Patient Care Technician (NCPCT), or
- Completion of US Navy Hospital Corps School, or
- Emergency Services to include EMR, EMS, EMT, AEMT and Paramedic, or
- Current student enrolled in a clinical program (beyond prerequisites) having completed at least one semester of RN, LPN, RT or PT, or
- Current work experience within last three years as a PCT or Nursing Assistant.
Experience
One year of prior health care experience preferred.
