SUMMARY:
Under the general supervision of the Specialist, Manager, or Director performs various complex clinical laboratory tests in one or more of the laboratory sections of the Pathology Department.
The work performed requires a professional level of knowledge in order to read and interpret test results, especially those that are abnormal or atypical. Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the calibration of equipment, performance and interpretation of highly complex testing and the corresponding Quality Control results, and the troubleshooting of equipment as needed.
All specific functions performed in this position reflect the age specific needs of the patient.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Receives specimens, confirms patient's identification, validates the appropriateness of physician's orders and labels, exercising care to avoid contamination of specimen.
Prepares and determines suitability of solutions, reagents and stains following standard laboratory formulas and procedures; confirming expiration dates. Datesnitials reagents and QC materials appropriately once opened.
Follows established departmental procedures, performs complex clinical tests using a variety of methodologies including EIA, IFA, Chemiluminesence, RIA, Electrophoresis, Immunoassay and Colorimetry.
Performs complex clinical laboratory tests, which require a professional level of knowledge in order to monitor testing procedures and parameters, and to interpret and analyze test results.
Interprets clinical significance of test results. Collaborates with other technologists to confirm unusual test results or test procedure variation. May review same with Specialist, Manager or Director. Records and reports test results to ordering physician or DOH, as procedurally required.
Assists in the instruction of students and residents, as required, and in the orientation and training of new employees to an assigned laboratory section.
Performs quality control checks on equipment and reagents, records values and uses results to identify potential problems.
Performs new tests and procedures during developmental stages and makes recommendations for modification and establishment of new tests and procedures.
Monitors, sets up and calibrates equipment, troubleshoots operational problems and performs preventative maintenance and minor repairs involving the manufacturer's Hot Line as needed.
Cleans and maintains laboratory equipment, glassware, instruments, work benches, etc.
Helps to maintain inventory control in the lab, to include stocking of supplies to maintain laboratory readiness.
Participates in quality Assurance and Improvement programs, as needed
Maintains RI State CLS License, requiring a minimum of 15 hours/year in continuing education, and current knowledge of clinical laboratory theories and technologies.
Complies with all QA, Safety, Infection Control, and HIPAA guidelines in accordance with established hospital and departmental policies, procedures and objectives.
Performs other related duties that may be assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor's degree in a lab science such as chemical, physical, biological, clinical laboratory science, medical technology or closely related field or equivalent education and experience as defined by CLIA standards.
CREDENTIALS:
National certification by ASCP or equivalent in any of the offered categories such as Medical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, Microbiology, Chemistry, Hematology, or any other recognized categorical certifications.
OR
Eligible for national certification with laboratory training including completion of a clinical laboratory training program approved or accredited by the ABHES, NAACLS, or other organization approved by HHS
OR
Previously qualified or could have qualified as a technologist as defined by CLIA standards for testing personnel.
The ability to operate equipment and instruments and to perform all procedures and tests within assigned laboratory section and interpret them accurately.
The physical and visual dexterity necessary to conduct and interpret tests.
The physical ability to stand and work at laboratory benches.
Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care patients with consideration of aging processes, human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.
EXPERIENCE:
One year experience in a clinical laboratory.
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Exposure to odors, infectious materials, toxins and other hazardous substances.
Visual strain is encountered while closely examining specimens.
Regularly required to stand, lift and carry supplies, etc.

SUMMARY: Under supervision of the Medical Director and LifePACT Manager or designee following established policies and procedures, performs the role of an EMT, including delivery of patient care, training, equipment and maintenance, and research efforts. Maintains clinical skills, knowledge of literature in the field and outreach, and training objectives. The position shall not supersede the RN or Paramedic role in patient care once responsibility for a patient is transferred from the EMT to the paramedic or RN. Receives and accessions specimens for processing, paying attention to the demographic information on the requisition slip and specimen label.
Also checks specimens prior to testing using established procedures for specimen integrity and suitability for testing.
Processes a variety of laboratory samples such as blood, urine, stool, body fluids, etc.
Interpret orders and requisitions to determine aliquots needed for distribution to the laboratory.
Processing can include splitting, pouring, relabeling, disposal or delivery to designated laboratory sections. Responds to pneumatic tube, load automation line as well as receive and sort courier deliveries.
Triage STAT specimens.
Logs specimens into computer system, takes temperatures, records receipt of supplies, rotates stock, loads and unloads samples from instruments and performs limited function (waived) testing.
Enters necessary information on log sheets and/or into the laboratory computer system. Performs a variety of clerical duties including duties associated with coding and billing. Prepares and maintains detailed records of laboratory procedure requests and results; coding outpatient billing forms and generates appropriate billing data.
Answers telephone and responds to general and specific information requests.
Responds to and assists in tracking and resolving lab related problems and concerns.
Ensures all actions are in compliance with confidentiality policies and in accordance with the Standard Operating procedures.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Prepares and determines suitable of solutions, reagents and stains following standard laboratory formulas and procedures; may prepare variations of same for special tests.
Performs complex clinical laboratory tests in one or more sections of the Pathology Department, which require a professional level of knowledge in order to monitor testing procedures and parameters, and to interpret and analyze test results. Some examples of tests performed include:
Performs routine and specialized blood tests to:
Type and cross-match blood and assumes responsibility for compatibility between patient and donor.
Isolate and identify any unusual or abnormal blood incompatibility factors and Identify atypical conditions in blood specimens.
Performs standard hematologic procedures, as well as more specialized and difficult procedures, such as: Identifying and quantifying all formed elements of blood (i.e. platelets, leukocytes, etc.) and Identifying coagulation factors. Isolates microorganisms from a variety of clinical specimens with emphasis on rapid detection of pathogenic organisms using specialized morphological and biochemical methods.
Performs antibiotic susceptibility tests.
Performs chemical analyses of body fluids in order to determine conditions, such as level of glucose, sodium potassium, chlorides, carbon dioxide, drugs and alcohol in the blood.
Records and reviews test results for accuracy and prepares test reports; relay test results and/or reports to physicians or others authorized to receive them.
Discusses findings with physicians when necessary.
Assists in the instruction of students and residents and in the orientation of new employees to an assigned laboratory section.
Performs quality control checks on equipment and reagents, records values and uses results to identify potential problems.
Performs new tests and procedures during development stages and makes recommendations for modification and establishment of new tests and procedures.
Monitors equipment operation; sets up and calibrates equipment, troubleshoots operational problems and performs preventative maintenance and minor repairs.
Logs in specimen and maintains records of specimen during tests; walks to patient floors, draws patient blood samples following established procedures and transports specimens to Pathology for testing.Cleans and maintains laboratory equipment, glassware, instruments, work benches and so forth.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor's degree in a lab science such as chemical, physical, biological, clinical laboratory science, medical technology or closely related field or equivalent education and experience as defined by CLIA standards.
CREDENTIALS:
National certification by ASCP or equivalent in any of the offered categories such as Medical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, Microbiology, Chemistry, Hematology, or any other recognized categorical certifications.
OR
Eligible for national certification with laboratory training including completion of a clinical laboratory training program approved or accredited by the ABHES, NAACLS, or other organization approved by HHSOR
Previously qualified or could have qualified as a technologist as defined by CLIA standards for testing personnel.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Interviews patient to obtain pertinent medical history, to explain and instruct patient regarding procedure and to allay anxiety and elicit cooperation. Abstracts additional relevant information from patient 's chart or medical record.
Ensures that electrodes are properly sterilized, applies electrodes on predetermined measured positions on patient 's head and checks electrode performance. Uses appropriate precautionary measures to prevent infections when using needle electrodes. Uses judgment in placement of electrodes in deviating from standard practice in order to obtain best results.
Calibrates intravenous and oxygen apparatus on patients requiring such therapy and reports any malfunction to appropriate personnel.
Selects predetermined electrode combinations as well as special combinations appropriate to the specific case. Obtains and continuously scans recordings, recognizes artifacts and takes appropriate action to eliminate them. Uses activating procedures such as hyperventilation and photic stimulation to induce and record brain reaction.
Makes notation on record of all actions taken during procedure and records clinical manifestations observed during test such as patient 's degree of alertness versus drowsiness.
Reviews and analyzes tracings. Prepares impressions of findings indicating technical changes that are focal, lateralized, paraxynol or artifactual.
Provides training and guidance to other technologist. Interviews, recommends hiring, evaluates and when necessary, disciplines or recommends discharge of subordinate technical and clerical personnel. Prepares monthly statistics of number and types of tests, inpatients, outpatients, locations where work performed, etc.
Provides in-service instruction to other non-EEG clinical personnel through lectures and seminars on topics regarding new procedures and techniques to staff members and other personnel.
May assume total responsibility when EEG tests are performed in radiology or operating room. May monitor brain activity of patients under anesthesia and communicates patient information to surgeon during procedure. Supports EEG monitoring when assigned to special procedures lab or operating room, to include brain mapping, intraoperative EEG recording, special electrode intrarecording and WADA studies.
Performs premature baby testing at Rhode Island Hospital and /or Woman and Infants Hospital. Provides patient perpetration, including measuring of head and placement of electrodes. Observes three physiological parameters in addition to multi-channel EEG recordings: eye movements, respiration, and cardiac activity. Records clinical changes to explain EEG findings.
May conduct closed-circuit video recordings, requiring knowledge of electronic capabilities of equipment.
Conducts EEG monitoring on patients with specialized electrodes. Adheres to proper sterilization procedures in placing needle electrodes on patients. Provides stimulus where visual / auditory reactions are induced.
Maintains equipment in clean, operating condition; detects instrumental malfunction; makes minor repairs and adjustments and reports the need for major repairs.
Performs quality assurance activities according to department procedures and program.
May provide long-term monitoring of pediatric and adult patients with epilepsy and N.S. condition.

Successful completion of post-high school program in a one or two year accredited program in EEG technology.
Eligibility to sit for written examination for formal registration by the American Board of Registration in Electroencephalographic Technology within three years of placement in position (1,000 EEG examinations are required).
Knowledge of EEG techniques, concepts and equipment. Ability to apply knowledge to clinical settings and expand upon it through experience. Knowledge of pathological disorders directly affecting brain and other medical conditions indirectly causing brain dysfunction.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Ensures proper decontamination of surgical instruments, syringes, and equipment in order to clean, identify and inspect.
· Processes procedure trays, instruments sets, orthopedic sets and equipment through the decontamination room according to established cleaning procedures.
· Performs leak test and decontamination for various endoscopes according to established procedures.
· Utilizes detergents, disinfectants, and washers in a prescribed manner for proper cleaning/ decontamination and drying, following standard precautions with no more than two documented errors annually.
Ensures proper assembly and packaging of instrument sets to allow proper sterilization.

· Operates steam (flash and prevac), EPS Scope Processor and other equipment relating to sterilization of supplies, according to written Q.A. procedures.
· Identifies and checks instruments for proper operation and overall condition according to established procedures with no more than two documented errors annually.
Conducts biological monitoring for all sterilizers.
· Performs BowieDick and biological testing of all sterilizers in the department and operating room daily in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations.
· Incubates, interprets and records results of all biological tests.
· Immediately implements recall procedures when positive biological testing is encountered, notifying all affected departments, Sterile Processing Supervisor. Prepares O.R. case carts and performs Distribution rounds.
· Maintains prescribed inventory levels for each cart.

SUMMARY:
The Lead Medical Technologist reports to the Pathology Manager. Under general supervision and in accordance with established policies and procedures, performs independently in various laboratory sections of Pathology. Is assigned individually for overseeing the operations and the personnel performing testing in a specific laboratory section or shift. RESPONSIBILITIES:
Performs the necessary investigations to identify the probable causes and suggest potential resolutions to incidents or issues raised by staff / clients; e.g. Outreach clients, physicians etc.
Prepares and determines suitability of solutions, reagents and stains following standard laboratory formulas and procedures; may prepare variations of same for special tests.
Applies an advanced level of knowledge and/or experience in a specific laboratory section in order to conduct and interpret routine, specialized and or innovative tests and analyses.
Participates in research projects within assigned laboratory section, as well as the review, analysis, development, and implementation of new and improved clinical laboratory procedures and techniques.
Performs complex clinical laboratory tests in the Pathology Department, which require a professional level of knowledge in order to monitor testing procedures and parameters, and to interpret and analyze test results.
Records and reviews test results for accuracy and prepares test reports; relays test results and/or reports to physicians or others authorized to receive them. Discusses findings with physicians when necessary.
Utilizes advanced knowledge in order to function as a technical resource person for other technical personnel within the Specialists' area of specialization. Participates in the orientation and training of new employees in their assigned laboratory section.

Monitors equipment operation; sets up and calibrates equipment, troubleshoots operational problems and performs preventative maintenance and minor repairs. Cleans and maintains laboratory equipment, glassware, instruments, work benches, etc.
Performs the duties of a Medical Technologist or other duties in area of responsibility that may be assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, or closely related field or equivalent education and experience as defined by CLIA standards.
National certification (or eligible) in Medical Laboratory Science or Medical Technology by ASCP or equivalent.
Advanced or Master's degree work in area of specialization is desired but specialized knowledge can also be obtained through equivalent work experience.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Ensures proper decontamination of surgical instruments, syringes, and equipment in order to clean, identify and inspect.
· Processes procedure trays, instruments sets, orthopedic sets and equipment through the decontamination room according to established cleaning procedures.
· Performs leak test and decontamination for various endoscopes according to established procedures.
· Utilizes detergents, disinfectants, and washers in a prescribed manner for proper cleaning/ decontamination and drying, following standard precautions with no more than two documented errors annually.
Ensures proper assembly and packaging of instrument sets to allow proper sterilization.
· Inspects instrument sets for cleanliness. Checks or tests instrumentation for sharpness, burrs and function. Assembles and wraps instrument equipment trays following the established procedure for each tray.
· Labels and initials all assembled procedure trays making sure that all quality control monitors have been placed accurately.
· Operates steam (flash and prevac), EPS Scope Processor and other equipment relating to sterilization of supplies, according to written Q.A. procedures.
· Identifies and checks instruments for proper operation and overall condition according to established procedures with no more than two documented errors annually.
Conducts biological monitoring for all sterilizers.
· Performs BowieDick and biological testing of all sterilizers in the department and operating room daily in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations.
· Incubates, interprets and records results of all biological tests.
· Immediately implements recall procedures when positive biological testing is encountered, notifying all affected departments, Sterile Processing Supervisor. Prepares O.R. case carts and performs Distribution rounds.
· Maintains prescribed inventory levels for each cart.
· Ensures proper rotation of all supplies and carts within and out of the department, as observed by supervisors.
· Prints operating room schedule pick listsdd on lists according to procedure and accurately assembles case carts for surgery.
· Performs distribution and pick-up daily on nursing units for instrumentation. Monitors the workflow and communication of designated shifts to ensure the completion of work assignments.

Continuously monitors patient telemetry including cardiac rhythms, blood pressure, SpO2 reading, respiratory rate, Co2 level and additional vital signs depending on acuity level.
Obtains, interprets, and accurately documents rhythm strips as determined by policy, orders, or the healthcare team and with changes in patient condition.
