Pay Range:
$20.80 - $31.20Scheduled Hours: Full Time; Day Shift Monday through Friday 7:30 am to 4:00 pm, No holidays or weekends.
Education/Experience Required:
High school diploma.
1 yr. SPD experience
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:
Ability to communicate and follow directions.
Computer skills.
Experienced in operating sterilization equipment
Certified Central Service Tech within 90 days of hire
Major Responsibilities:
Decontamination of Instruments and Equipment
1)Wears proper protective attire when performing decontamination.
2)Follows established procedures to ensure decontamination is complete and correct.
3)Sets up decontamination equipment for operation and ensures proper function and continuous work flow throughout the shift.
4)Maintains a neat and clean work area at all times.
5)Reports improper equipment operation to clinical engineers, red tags the equipment, and documents on the Shift report.
6)Cleans and disinfects equipment and work area at completion of shift as assigned.
7)Handles infectious waste according to established hospital procedure.
Performance of Assembly/Packaging/Wrapping
1)Examines and ensure that all the components of the surgical instrumentation is clean and properly function prior to tray assembly.
2)Test all instrumentation for correct function following established procedures each time the instrumentation is processed.
3)Electrical test all instrumentation that has an insulation coating each time the instrument is processed.
4)Assembles instrument sets, ensuring that the correct number and type of instruments are present following the tray count sheet created in the Censitrac Instrument Tracking system. Placing the instruments appropriately to ensure sterilization and ease of use by the user.
5)Follow all manufacture information for use sheets approved processes to package and/or wrap the trays/items for terminal sterilization.
Validation of Sterilization Equipment:
1)Runs appropriate tests for sterilizers; biological, bowie dick.
2)Validates and document in Censitrac Instrument Tracking system each sterilization cycle utilizing biological, chemical and mechanical indicators.
Performance of Sterilization
1)Utilizing the Censitrac Instrument Tracking system, scan all items into each sterilizer load.
2)Labels each item processed in the sterilizer with correct load label.
3)Position each item on the sterilizer cart to ensure sterilization.
4)Include Biological Challenge pack on the second load for each Steam Sterilizer and any load containing Implantable.
5)Observes and assesses the operation of each sterilizer for every cycle by interpreting the recorded data strip provided. Scan the strip into Censitrac Instrument Tracking system and document results of chemical and biological test.
6)Initiate a recall should any load fail to meet specified parameter. Notify Manager immediately.
Performance of Inventory/Storage/Distribution Functions
1)Places sterile items in appropriate area for distribution, ensuring the items are accurately sorted by department.
2)Receives supplies from warehouse and outside vendors, ensuring that supplies entering SPD are devoid of external contaminants.
3)Completes case carts for OR following the standard work for loading the cart and ensuring items requested are ready for distribution to OR.
4)Complete case cart assembly log and Case Cart Communication form per Standard work for each case cart built.
5)Assists with cleaning of storage areas and work stations to maintain a contaminant-free environment.
Performance of Low Temperature, Sterrad, Sterilization
1)Assure that all items are completely dry prior to assembly. Utilize Censitrac Instrument tracking system to assemble trays/instruments.
2)Wrap or containerize items for sterilization. Use Tyvek pouches for single instruments.
3)Run a biological test in the first load for each sterilizer daily.
4)Label each item placed in a sterilizer with a correct load label.
5)Position each item in the sterilizer cart to ensure sterilization.
6)Observes and assesses the operation of each sterilizer for every cycle by interpreting the recorded data strip provided. Scan the strip into Censitrac Instrument Tracking system and document results of chemical and biological test.
Demonstration of Leadership Behaviors
1)Assists with adjustment in daily work assignments to compensate for fluctuation to work flow.
2)Observes employee activities throughout the shift to ensure that established procedures are being followed for quality control.
3)Assists in ensuring that equipment is properly functioning by communicating equipment malfunctions to manager and/or Engineering/Biomed and filling out appropriate work orders.
4)Acts as liaison between SPD and other departments to interpret problems that occur and communicate back to them in a courteous and professional manner.
5)Assists in maintaining SPD inventory by periodically ordering and receiving supplies and maintaining the appropriate paperwork.
Implementation of Quality Improvement Ideas to Enhance Operation and Team Function
1)Presents problem/improvement opportunities with an A3 action plan.
2)Monitors process improvement indicators and reports to staff.
3)Assists in precepting new associates and sterile processing students.

- Ensures quality of test results by following defined Quality Control (QC) and Quality Assurance (QA) procedures. Follows QC procedures and evaluates QC results prior to reporting patient results. Test results are reviewed for accuracy and are promptly reported in the LIS. Demonstrates the ability to perform and accurately document all procedures related to critical values, technical limit failures and QA activities. Demonstrates the ability to recognize a test or reporting system problem, troubleshoot and resolve if possible, seeking advice and escalating as needed. Performs appropriate patient procedures in accordance with age-specific guidelines for the age groups served.
- Ensures safety and compliance: Patients are accurately identified using two appropriate patient identifiers prior to sample collection. Patient samples are accurately labeled and identified throughout the testing process from sample collection through testing and storage. Misidentified samples are identified and responded to appropriately, notifying all appropriate staff. Results are reported for the correct specimen. Protects self, coworkers and facility by following approved policies and procedures to prevent the spread of blood borne and/or airborne diseases. Uses engineering controls, work practice controls and appropriate personal protective equipment as indicated in the section task list.
- Maintains appropriate education to accomplish work objectives and maintain current certifications as applicable. This includes the operating table, autotransfusion system, electrocardiograph (ECG) and temperature cables, hyper/hypothermia blanket, medication and pressure manifolds, rapid infusion warmer, recorders, defibrillators, the patient monitoring system, and transesophageal echocardiography imaging unit (TEE) machines.

Tuesday - Saturday 10:30pm - 7amThe Specimen Processing Technician is a position within the clinical laboratory and microbiology that is responsible for managing specimens once they arrive in the department and handling multiple pre-analytical variables. Depending on the area of the lab, this may include, but are not limited to: positive patient identification, correct tube types, specimen conditions and integrity and how they affect laboratory results. The Specimen Processing Technician accepts samples in the laboratory and performs tasks including releasing orders out of the Hospital Information System (HIS), receiving specimens in the Laboratory Information System (LIS), and processing specimens to include aliquoting and preparation for the automation line. The specimen Processing Technician troubleshoots specimen and order issues and communicates with care providers across the Health System. The Specimen Processing Technician working in Microbiology is responsible for performing pre-analytic functions such as: specimen receipt, sterile processing, specimen manipulation including sonication and tissue grinding, determination of appropriate culture media for different specimen types and plating. The Specimen Processing Technician follows regulatory, accreditation, safety and hospital standards, policies and procedures, and participates in quality assurance and quality improvement activities.
Responsibilities and Essential Job Functions
- Creates Registration encounters, releases orders out of HIS when indicated; receives samples in LIS; prints barcode labels and affixes labels to specimens.
- Completes order entry functions or paperwork as required. Ensures proper container type, centrifugation, specimen sterility, and transport conditions for specimens.
- Ensures positive patient identification, correct specimen collection and handling/transport; performs specimen processing duties and prioritizes based on urgency
- Ensures the specimen and orders received are appropriate for requested testing. Prioritizes specimens based on clinical urgency. - Performs specimen processing duties including but not limited to: aliquoting urine and body fluid samples, supply storage, Kanban supply, inventory monitoring and storing patient samples appropriately.
- In Microbiology, uses sterile techniques to handle, manipulate, and inoculate specimens on to culture media, including but not limited to determination of selecting the correct culture media based on specimen, order and protocols, sterile aliquoting, sonification and tissue grinding.
- Assists in pathology specimen preservation, by adding formalin to specimens, and/or paging residents or providers as needed.
- Fields inquiries and communicates information in written and verbal formats. Answers the phone and provides customer service to internal and external customers following established standards.
- Consults Specimen Processing Coordinator, supervisor or lab leadership when appropriate.
- Assists other staff with processing questions or automation line issues.
- Assists with training new hires, students, or medical students, if applicable.
- Disposes of bio-hazardous materials, chemical waste, sharps and other potentially hazardous materials according to policy and strictly adheres to safety and infection control procedures. Operates various quality assurance testing equipment associated to flexible endoscopic scopes, transesophageal ultrasound probes, and electro-surgical insulation defect detector for laparoscopic and energy provided surgical instrumentation. Utilizes heat detection devices to allow steam sterilized surgical instrumentation to be released for use without risking burns to staff and patients. Operates demagnetizers of stainless-steel instruments for ophthalmic and delicate cardiac surgical instrumentation for safe use on patients. Utilizes various borescope devices to inspect inner channels of lumened surgical instrumentation and flexible scopes.
7. Maintains a clean and safe environment by adhering to Standard Precautions and Infection Control practices. Staff follow protocols for proper donning of personnel protective equipment (PPE) while completing the decontamination process referencing IFU’s supplied by the manufacturers.

- Properly orients tissue in paraffin embedding medium ensuring all surfaces such as epidermis, dermis, mucosal, lumen and inked margins, are embedded and sectioned on the same plane.
- Prepares tissue or slides for Special Procedures such as send outs, EM, IF, Cell Flow, Cytogenetic, including packaging arranging transportation, documentation and billing.
- Assists in managing workload and productivity by adjusting schedule when necessary.
- Maintains an adequate cut supply of Positive (+) control slides and documents on Control Tissue QC log, the case number and QC date for special stains.
- Completes Pathologist’s, Supervisor’s and management team’s requests within 24 hours, notifying them of any delay.
- Cleans and maintains reagents tissue processors, embedding center, microtomy equipment, H&E stainer in excellent condition, keeping all work areas clean and documenting QC as required.
- Accommodates special needs of the section organization by volunteering to do any work/task when needed technical or nontechnical areas due to inclement weather, electrical power outages, computer downtime or other critical times.

- EKG HM- Houston Methodist Electrocardiogram Course (HM) - Houston Methodist within 6 months and
- BLS - Basic Life Support or Instructor (AHA) - American Heart Association and
- Must have one of the following: • CCT - Certified Cardiographic Technician (CCI) • CET - Certified EKG Technician (NHA) • CET - Certified EKG Technician (NPS) • ECG - Certified ECG Technician (ACA) • NRCEKG - Nationally Registered Certified EKG Technician (NAHP) within 18 months

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
PEOPLE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Promotes a positive work environment and contributes to a dynamic, team focused work unit that actively helps one another to achieve optimal department results. Collaborates with all members of the patient care team by actively communicating and reporting pertinent patient care information and data in a comprehensive manner.
- Serves as a patient advocate in preventing/resolving ethical issues. Facilitates interventions to relieve the patient’s/family spiritual distress.
- Contributes towards improvement of department scores for employee engagement, i.e., peer-to-peer accountability.
SERVICE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Performs diagnostic electrocardiograms (12 lead EKGs) and Holter monitor exams that require precise placement of electrodes to the assigned area for accurate EKG data. Proactively identifies issues and how to address them for optimum results.
- Provides care for the physical needs of patients when conducting the EKG and/or Holter exams. Educates patients on the required care of the monitoring unit and electrode care, who require inpatient or outpatient Holter monitoring.
- Provides direct assistance to physicians and other health care team members during diagnostic exams.
- Uses peer-to-peer accountability to contribute towards improving department score for patient satisfaction.
QUALITY/SAFETY ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Identifies changes or abnormalities in EKG morphology when performing exams or processing data. Takes corrective action or communicates immediately, when appropriate, to proper personnel for the best results.
- Reviews the quality of EKG tracings for the patient care team and interpreting physician.
- Ensures all patient care equipment has had QC performed as required and is in safe working order prior to use. Reports any malfunctions to management and regularly practices preventive maintenance procedures; calls for service if needed.
FINANCE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Provides accurate and complete documentation of patient procedures. Enters charges at the time service is delivered, when applicable.
- Utilizes resources with cost effectiveness and value creation in mind. Self-motivated to independently manage time effectively, minimizing incidental overtime, and prioritize daily tasks, assisting coworkers as needed.
GROWTH/INNOVATION ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Participates in departmental projects and shared governance activities, activities focused on innovation, efficiency or improvement in patient care and activities.

Principal Accountabilities
Receives and records physician’s orders for patient testing: schedules patients, obtains patient medical history and completes appropriate documentation.
Prepares patients for procedures explains procedure, measures for accurate electrode sites, applies electrodes and adjusts as appropriate.
Performs advanced neurodiagnostic exams depending on modality maintains equipment and makes minor adjustments as indicated.
May be responsible for scheduling other techs, assisting the department manager as needed, and performing entry-level supervisory duties.
Ensures safe care to patients, staff and visitors; adheres to all Memorial Hermann policies, procedures, and standards within budgetary specifications including time management, supply management, productivity and quality of service.
Promotes individual professional growth and development by meeting requirements for mandatory/continuing education and skills competency; supports department-based goals which contribute to the success of the organization; serves as preceptor, mentor, and resource to less experienced staff.
