Knowledge and practice of standard principles, processes, procedures, and equipment related to:
1) ordering Laboratory testing,
2) collecting blood specimens,
3) compassionately and effectively interacting with patients,
4) handling and processing biological specimens routinely submitted to the Laboratory for analysis.
Ability to accurately, precisely, and reliably perform job duties and assigned tasks.
1) Ability to organize and prioritize job duties and assigned tasks for completion within expected timeframes.
2) Ability to compassionately and effectively interact with patients of diverse ages, backgrounds, values, beliefs and behaviors.
Workflow Management Ability to appropriately respond to:
1) fluctuations in volume,
2) unexpected situations or problems such as equipment or IS failure,
3) shift-to-shift hand-offs,
4) STAT test orders,
5) specimen integrity issues,
6) regular review of pending logs, priority assignments, etc.

Job Description:
The Monitoring Technician is responsible for on-going surveillance of patient cardiac monitors on multiple floors and settings. Provides registered nurses and clinicians with immediate notification of any changes in cardiac rhythms. The Monitoring technician completes the admission set-up of telemetry monitors for the clinical units and performs monitor discharge and maintenance. The Monitoring Technician has completed a Cardiac Dysrhythmia Course and successfully passed a rhythm analysis examination.
- Maintains ongoing, high-level surveillance of patients’ cardiac rhythms and notifies nursing and clinicians of any rate and rhythm changes.
- Measures and interprets patients’ heart rhythm and documents on patient rhythm strip every four hours.
- Initiates and discontinues monitoring equipment on admission, transfer, or discharge.
- Performs configuration as necessary.
- Performs clerical duties related to admission, discharge, and documentation of patient information from Central Cardiac Monitoring Room.
- Communicates clearly when receiving information from units or providers.
- Uses clear and complete communication with unit personnel when delivering information about changes in patient rhythm.

SUMMARY:
Under the general supervision of and reports to the Pathology Manager and within Hospital and department policies and detailed instructions and procedures, performs routine preparatory work for Technicians and Technologists and routine service duties in maintaining the laboratory areas in a clean and orderly fashion. Incumbents may perform any combination of the following duties, depending on the area assigned.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Receives and accessions specimens for processing, paying attention to the demographic information on the requisition slip and specimen label.
Also checks specimens prior to testing using established procedures for specimen integrity and suitability for testing.
Processes a variety of laboratory samples such as blood, urine, stool, body fluids, etc.
Interpret orders and requisitions to determine aliquots needed for distribution to the laboratory.
Processing can include splitting, pouring, relabeling, disposal or delivery to designated laboratory sections. Responds to pneumatic tube, load automation line as well as receive and sort courier deliveries.
Triage STAT specimens.
Logs specimens into computer system, takes temperatures, records receipt of supplies, rotates stock, loads and unloads samples from instruments and performs limited function (waived) testing.
Enters necessary information on log sheets and/or into the laboratory computer system. Performs a variety of clerical duties including duties associated with coding and billing. Prepares and maintains detailed records of laboratory procedure requests and results; coding outpatient billing forms and generates appropriate billing data.
Answers telephone and responds to general and specific information requests.
Responds to and assists in tracking and resolving lab related problems and concerns.
Ensures all actions are in compliance with confidentiality policies and in accordance with the Standard Operating procedures.
Employs precautionary measures in handing and disposal of blood specimens and materials following all general safety regulations and procedures.
Carries out and documents quality control and maintenance procedures.
Notifies supervisor of any equipment malfunctions or unacceptable quality control results as established for each quality control procedure. Keeps all areas clean while working and performs regularly scheduled cleaning duties as defined in the lab area.
Performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
The level of knowledge gained from the completion of High School with some course work in the fields of biology and chemistry.
Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients with consideration of aging processes, human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.
General knowledge of variety of laboratory tests and procedures for obtaining and handling laboratory specimens for processing within various sections of laboratory, in order to respond to requests for information; to receive, prepare and distribute specimens to appropriate laboratories; to identify specimens requiring special handling; to be knowledgeable in the use of universal precautions.
Organizational and clerical skills to maintain a variety of logs and records.
Ability to operate a personal computer. Interpersonal and communication skills to exchange factual information with physicians, nurses, external laboratories, etc. regarding laboratory services, test results, and test procedures.
EXPERIENCE:
At least one year progressively more responsible related experience to become familiar with various laboratories’ procedures for handling specimens and entering test orders into the computer system.
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Works in the laboratory, where there is some exposure to unpleasant odors, infectious materials, toxins and other hazardous material.
Hazards are minimized by adherence to established safety precautions and procedures.

I. Major Responsibilities:
Clinical Practice - For Blood Donor Room, Endoscopy, and Transplant Services Only:
1. Ensure that staff adhere to system policies and procedures for nursing care standards in collaboration with the Chief Nursing officer and Ambulatory Physician Leader as necessary.
2. Coordinates clinical practice and deployment of resources at the clinic level to ensure ongoing implementation of processes and adherence to standards.
3. Develops Scope of Service and Plan of Care for the identified area. Submits to senior leadership for approval.
4. Assists staff with the development of a cohesive, service-oriented team, and serves as a role model, mentor, coach/facilitator.
5. Monitors competence of staff and ensures education to complete required competencies. Monitors continuing education participation.
6. Conducts daily patient care rounds, assessing patient care requirements and monitoring nursing and ancillary staff performance to achieve safe, cost effective and quality patient care.
7. Directs the oversight of clinical practice through continuity of patient care assignments to optimize the patient plan of care.

Quality, Safety and Experience Improvements:

2. Actively coordinates clinical quality improvement and safety efforts on the unit/clinic with defined medical center quality and safety goals.
3. Works collaboratively to solve problems, improve processes and integrate services within the unit/clinic and with other departments.

Position Purpose:
Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise, Idaho is seeking an Anesthesia Technicians to join the Surgical Services Department. Anesthesia Technicians provide anesthesia support services throughout medical center under the direct supervision of the anesthesiologist and manager. The Anesthesia Technician assists the anesthesia team prior to, during, and following patient procedures in various operating rooms across surgical services. Individuals in this position are proficient in the maintenance, packing, and resupplying of the most complex anesthesia supplies and equipment in the operating room, and when available, responds to codes with anesthesia.
The Anesthesia Technician checks and supplies anesthesia carts and machines, checks and replaces anesthesia gas tanks, disassembles used anesthesia equipment, disinfects machines and supply carts, replaces used products and prepares transducers for invasive hemodynamic monitoring. This position has significant patient contact while assisting in transport and procedures and works collaboratively with anesthesia, nursing staff, and off-site resources. In addition, the incumbent assists with the preparation of anesthesia supplies both preoperatively and post operatively by cleaning, maintaining, packaging, ordering, and inventorying of anesthesia supplies.

Works in secure anesthesia workrooms with limited medication storage, excluding control substances, and handles medications under the supervision of anesthesiologist or anesthetist.
Ensure anesthesia carts are supplied and machines are in each room prior to the beginning of the surgery schedule and between procedures. Checks and replaces anesthesia gas tanks as needed.
Retrieve special anesthesia supplies that are anticipated and/or requested by the person administering the anesthetic before and during surgery.
Prepares complex equipment and supplies for hemodynamic monitoring. This varies based on location and may include peripheral arterial and pulmonary artery catheter transducers, EKG, pulse oximeter, and nerve simulators.
Ensures monitoring equipment and supplies are ready.
Ensures the anesthesia machine is ready for use including troubleshooting and correcting problems. May perform daily anesthesia equipment inspections including suction, electrical plugs, gas connections, oxygen and nitrous oxide cylinders.
May assist in positioning patients for procedures.
Assist in dressing and securing IVs and Arterial lines.
Assist Anesthesia during intubating and extubating procedures as directed.
Restock all used supplies as needed during a surgery.
Dispose of contaminated materials and disinfect equipment in accordance with general operating room P&P concerning biohazardous waste.
Clean anesthesia equipment in the Operating Room and outside locations following each procedure.
Clean, maintain, and package used anesthesia materials and equipment.
Inventories and orders anesthesia supplies.
Run errands as requested by anesthesiologists/CRNAs/charge RN/other team members as appropriate to facilitate the preparation and conduct of anesthesia. Perform additional duties as requested by other team members.

This includes transfusion services, attending codes, performing testing on irretrievable samples, tissue grinding and gram stains, mass casualty procedures, and mass transfusion procedures.
- Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served. Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the department's policies and procedures. POSITION SUMMARY

As a Sterile Processing Technician, you will provide services in the decontamination and sterile processing of instruments used in many different types of procedures. This is an important role that collaborates with OR staff to provide sterile instruments and equipment needed for operative procedures. You will assist with ongoing inventory of sterile supplies, equipment, schedule completion and communication for the department. This position demonstrates accountability for operating room readiness ensuring sterile surgical instrumentation and disposable supplies are complete and ready for a procedure prior to the preceding patient leaving the operating room. Responsible for the proper care and handling of all general and specialty instrumentation including the cleaning, decontamination, disassemble/reassemble, quality assurance, instrument identification, set assembly, packaging, sterilization, and distribution of surgical instrumentation for PeriOp Services, hospital departments, and clinics.
CORE FUNCTIONS
1. Provides decontamination and sterile processing support to PeriOp Services, ED, ICU, hospital wide departments, clinics both on and off campus, and ambulatory surgery centers. Provides various levels of service for the management of sterile surgical instrumentation and disposable patient care supplies. Support may-or-may-not include, decontamination of surgical instruments, assembly/sterilization, sterile instrument storage, partial or complete case cart support, OR core tech support and high-level disinfection.
2. Responsible for the decontamination, assembly, and packaging of surgical instruments following established protocols, instructions for use (IFU) as well as performs required quality assurance, repairs, reassembly, documentation, sterility handling, and storage of specialized surgical instruments. Maintains required sterilization logs and quality assurance records relating to all equipment associated for the purpose of decontamination, HLD disinfection, and sterilization.
3. Ability to interpret the surgical schedule and medical terminology as it pertains to scheduled procedures requiring sterile surgical instrumentation and disposable supplies needed. Able to address and communicate special needs to minimize delays to surgery. Responds to emergent calls from the Operating Room and performs preliminary investigation. Determines priority level of instrumentation requests and other hospital needs. Directs services in a competent and professional manner while assuring OR priorities are completed in a timely manner.
4. Able to differentiate surgical instrumentation that is surgery owned, consignment/loaner, hospital depart, surgeon, ambulatory surgery center, and clinics both on and off campus. Completes necessary tracking of surgical instruments with a paper log sheet or computer process for instrumentation leaving the area. 5. Utilizes specialized equipment for the decontamination, high-level disinfection, and sterilization of surgical instrumentation according to the device and equipment manufacturer’s recommendations and hospital policy. Operates steam and hydrogen peroxide sterilizers of various. Operates automated surgical instrument washers, ultrasonics, flush pumps, visualization devices, and cart washers to include high-level disinfectors where supported.
6. Operates various quality assurance testing equipment associated to flexible endoscopic scopes, transesophageal ultrasound probes, and electro-surgical insulation defect detector for laparoscopic and energy provided surgical instrumentation. Utilizes heat detection devices to allow steam sterilized surgical instrumentation to be released for use without risking burns to staff and patients. Operates demagnetizers of stainless-steel instruments for ophthalmic and delicate cardiac surgical instrumentation for safe use on patients. Utilizes various borescope devices to inspect inner channels of lumened surgical instrumentation and flexible scopes.
7. Maintains a clean and safe environment by adhering to Standard Precautions and Infection Control practices. Staff follow protocols for proper donning of personnel protective equipment (PPE) while completing the decontamination process referencing IFU’s supplied by the manufacturers.
8. Maintain flexibility to rotate shifts and adjust hours as needed, maintain a work record of regular attendance, timely arrivals, and departures, maintain professional appearance appropriate to position and function.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma/GED or equivalent working knowledge.
Must have mechanical aptitude with the ability to break down moving parts, clean, lubricate and reassemble, problem solve incomplete trays and missing instrumentation and have effective organizational, communication and human relation skills.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Complete national certification as an SPD Technician within one year of hire.
Additional related education and/or experience preferred.

Certifications

- Prepares specimens for courier pick up and delivery to referral lab as necessary. Communicates with other laboratory personnel when specimens need to be transported to other areas.
- Performs various Laboratory Information System functions. Files requisitions, reports and other pathology materials appropriately. Answers the telephone and refers requests for the delivery of results to physician offices appropriately.
- Organizes workload and sets priorities. Keeps work area neat, clean and well stocked. Utilizes all available work time by assisting others and performing additional tasks.
QUALITY/SAFETY ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Receives, triages, orders, labels and transports specimens for laboratory testing. Processes specimens, aliquots, and/or slides/blocks according to procedure for samples tested in the laboratory as well as samples forwarded to referral laboratories. Handles STAT samples expeditiously. Assists pathologist and/or other laboratory personnel with specimen grossing as needed.
- Recognizes problems (such as mislabels, incorrect tube type, etc.), identifies causes, and takes corrective action to solve basic problems.
- Operates automated instrumentation as applicable at entity following all safety measures. Performs and documents any processing equipment maintenance.
- Maintains a safe environment within the Laboratory, following all policies and procedures for safety, hazardous materials, security and emergency preparedness.
