STCH-Sutter Tracy Community HospPosition Overview:
Responsible for preparing the sterile field for surgical operations including the setup of sterile instruments, assisting surgeons in gowning and gloving, and draping patients for surgery. Directly supports the surgical team during operations by passing instruments and supplies, holding retractors, and anticipating surgeons' needs during course of surgery. Supports the functionality of the department by distributing supplies and performing equipment maintenance, testing, and setup as needed. Adheres to all local/state/federal regulations, codes, policies and procedures to ensure privacy and safety to help deliver optimal patient care. May also be responsible for performing specific procedures and/or may help orient other staff to the department.Job Description:
EDUCATION:
- HS Diploma or GED
- Other: Graduate of an accredited surgical technology program (or has certification that evidences education)
- OR Military training as a scrub tech
CERTIFICATION & LICENSURE:
- BLS-Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider
- Surgical Technician Certification (TS-C, CST, or NRST) is required to be eligible for incentive (if allowed per the Collective Bargaining Agreement for union represented employees)
TYPICAL EXPERIENCE:
- 1 year of recent relevant experience.
SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:
- General knowledge of surgical tools, procedures, views, and equipment.
- Ability to interpret a variety of data and instructions, furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
- Basic understanding of human anatomy, physiology, pathology, and medical terminology.
- Possess written and verbal communications skills to explain sensitive information clearly and professionally to diverse audiences, including non-medical people.

- General knowledge of computer applications, such as Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel and Outlook).

Responsible for preparing the sterile field for surgical operations including the setup of sterile instruments, assisting surgeons in gowning and gloving, and draping patients for surgery. Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Performs pre-analytical specimen processing: Receives patient specimens from within the institute and outside institutions.
- Becomes familiar with patient and specimen requirements; stores and transports specimens according to procedures; ensure specimen integrity is preserved at all times.
- Unloads and loads the pneumatic tube system and accurately distributes specimens; does routine and STAT specimen delivery runs to BWH laboratories; does specimen pick up runs from clinic locations at DFCI.
- Receives specimens into the Laboratory Information System (LIS) by scanning barcodes or manual entry.
- Verifies upon receipt that all samples are labeled according to the policy and addresses variances according to policies.
- Documents in the LIS any specimen or test cancellations per policy; contacts the appropriate provider or reference laboratories with questions regarding discrepancies with test orders or specimen containers.
- Processes add on tests according to policy.
- Processes tests sent out to reference laboratories; communicates with reference labs as needed.
- Processes specimens by loading the pre-analytic automation system or via centrifugation, aliquoting, storing, and shipping per test requirements.
- Performs various quality checks to ensure all requests are accurate before dispensing the specimens to the appropriate performing lab.
- Responds to telephone inquiries to assist providers, nurses and other caregivers with lab tests, test requirement and result inquiries.
- Performs all duties with accuracy and efficiency to ensure patient care is not compromised.
- Utilizes electronic system for faxed test results from reference laboratories.
- Uploads test results coming from outside reference laboratories into the patient’s electronic medical record via the SFA.
- Reviews pending lists as required; addresses and corrects discrepancies or pending results by contacting the reference lab and the provider as necessary.
- Participates and may lead in training new team members.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

Works with considerable independence to perform routine and complex laboratory tests in all assigned departments of the clinical laboratory to provide physicians with rapid and accurate laboratory test results. 1. Follows established procedures to perform all lab tests (including all levels of complexity as defined by CLIA) to obtain data for use in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. Provides guidance and consultation to Medical Laboratory Technicians in the interpretation of complex testing or unusual findings.
2. Assesses acceptability of specimens for analysis and maintains integrity of the specimens throughout the entire testing process.
3. Performs set up on all laboratory equipment, instruments and apparatus required for specific laboratory testing. Performs routine cleaning and preventative maintenance to ensure continued functioning of equipment. Documents all maintenance procedures performed in a timely and accurate manner.

Required:
- Graduation from college with a major in an applicable natural science; or two years of college courses in the natural sciences plus two years of applicable experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience

- Mohs Technician Certificate
- At least 6 months Mohs Tissue Technician laboratory experience.

The Vanderbilt Bill Wilkerson Center provides comprehensive adult speech and language services for individuals recovering from illness, injury, or progressive neurological conditions. Our highly specialized team of more than 15 speech-language pathologists evaluates and treats a wide range of communication, cognitive, fluency, voice, feeding, and swallowing disorders resulting from conditions such as stroke, traumatic brain injury, Parkinson’s disease, ALS, cancer, aphasia, aphonia, and post-operative laryngectomy. Services include speech and cognitive-communication evaluations, augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), swallowing assessments and treatment, FEES and modified barium swallow studies, stuttering therapy, counseling, and patient and family education.
