Schedule Details/Additional Information:
- OR operational hours are Monday - Friday 0700-1700. Can consider 8-hour shifts or 10-hour shifts. Position will have call requirements.
- Weeknight call will be 2-3 shifts per month; 1500/1700--0700
- Weekend call occurs approximately once every 11 weekends; begins at 1500/1700 on Friday evening and goes until 0700 Monday morning
- Holiday call occurs approximately once per year.
- Staff chooses their call shift in a rotating order.
- Response time for call is within 30 minutes.
Pay Range:
$26.55 - $39.85Major Responsibilities:- Provides for a clean, safe and efficient area conducive to optimal patient care. Utilizes aseptic surgical techniques in the preparation of materials, supplies and equipment for surgical procedures (e.g., assistance with gowning and gloving; preparation and draping of the surgical area; provision of a sterile field, instruments, suture and related materials; anticipation of the Surgeons' needs; passing of instruments and/or supplies; holding of retractors, observing and reporting possible breaks in aseptic technique; and assisting in maintaining a sterile, dry, unobstructed field).
- Performs all types of procedures and maintains basic knowledge of a variety of procedures.
- Ensures the environmental disinfection, safety and efficiency of the operating room. This includes setting up the room for each case including moving equipment (i.e., tables, cameras, microscopes, fracture table, and instrument pans), operating the various types of equipment used during operating room procedures, and returning equipment post procedure.
- Functions as a Second Assistant as necessary.
- Notifies appropriate staff of equipment and supply problems.
- Transports patients and/or equipment and supplies.
- Maintains a specialty cart or item, ensuring its completeness and availability. This includes checking the working condition of equipment, sterility, and sending damaged items out for repair.
- Performs various patient positioning and transporting duties, which require lifting and pushing/pulling, while utilizing proper technique.
- Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served. Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the department's policies and procedures. Age-specific information is developed further in the departmental job standards.
Licensure, Registration, and/or Certification Required:
- Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) needs to be obtained within 6 months unless department leader has determined it is not required.
Education Required:
- Completion of an accredited or approved program in Surgical Technology.
Experience Required:
- No experience required.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:
- Knowledge of aseptic surgical techniques used in the preparation of materials, supplies and equipment for various surgical procedures.
- Knowledge of various types of equipment used in the operating room.
- Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
- Must be able to withstand a very stressful and fast-paced environment.
- Must be able to:
- lift up to 50 lbs. from floor to waist.
- lift up to 20 lbs. over the head.
- carry up to 40 lbs. a reasonable distance.
- Must be able to:
- push/pull with 30 lbs. of force.
- perform a sliding transfer of 150 lbs. with a second person present.
- Required to use foot pedals on carts or machines.
- Exposed to the following hazards on a continuous basis: mechanical, electrical, chemical, radiation, blood and body fluids.
- Must have functional sight and hearing.
- Required to wear masks, gloves, goggles, and gowns.
- Must be able to sit, stand, walk, lift, squat, bend, reach above shoulders and twist frequently during work shift.
- Must be able to operate all equipment essential to performing the duties of the job.

- Accurately track and submit hours worked according to institutional procedures.

- Treat donors, specimens, plastinates, images, models, and laboratory materials with respect and contribute to a professional and supportive learning environment.

- Demonstrate reliability, punctuality, mature judgment, and professional communication.
- Communicate promptly about scheduling conflicts, delays, absences, or concerns.
- Maintain appropriate role boundaries and refer questions about grading, assessment, accommodations, course policies, or student concerns to the HSF Course Director.
- Comfort working with anatomical specimens, plastinates, models, and laboratory materials.
- Reliability, punctuality, and ability to follow detailed instructions.
- Professional written and verbal communication.
- Ability to collaborate well with students, faculty, staff, and other lab assistants.
- Ability to maintain appropriate boundaries in a peer-support role.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
- Hours: Variable, based on course needs and student availability; no more than 5 hours in any week. Lab assistants may work in pairs and will rotate coverage to minimize disruption to academic responsibilities.
- The ideal candidate is reliable, professional, highly engaged in anatomy, comfortable in the anatomy laboratory environment, physically able to assist with specimen logistics, and able to collaborate effectively with students, faculty, staff, and other lab assistants.
- Moving and positioning heavy anatomical specimens (weighing up to 75 pounds, with a student colleague).
- Standing, sitting, bending, and walking throughout the laboratory space.

- Strong engagement with and competence in anatomy.
- Interest in anatomy, surgery, radiology, medical education, or peer learning.
- Prior experience supporting small-group learning, mentoring, tutoring, laboratory work, or educational logistics.

Job Description:
The Anesthesia Technician is a vital member of the Anesthesia Care Team, committed to ensuring safe and effective anesthetic experiences. This role encompasses a variety of technical responsibilities, including cleaning and calibrating anesthesia machines, stocking supplies, and monitoring equipment quality. The technician is also responsible for transporting patients and performing routine patient care tasks, while providing critical support during emergency situations. Additionally, the technician assists with machine turnover and procedure preparation and may be required to be on call as needed. Essential Functions
- Checks, calibrates, restocks, prepares, and maintains basic anesthesia equipment and supply carts across all areas supported by the anesthesia team.
- Ensures all equipment is properly sterilized and functioning according to standards.
- Assists with room turnover and prepares anesthesia equipment for subsequent procedures.
- Manages the collection, cleaning, and proper processing of contaminated anesthesia equipment following procedures.
- Disinfects and cleans anesthesia equipment, the surrounding environment, and instrumentation in accordance with the manufacturer's Instructions for Use (IFU).
- Transports patients, including low-acuity patients, ensuring safe and efficient movement to and from the operating room and other designated areas.
- Performs Point-of-Care testing, including conducting and maintaining quality control procedures, and sterilizes equipment using appropriate methods.
- May be required to be on call and/or float to other departments based on operational needs, within the scope of competency and qualifications.

At Houston Methodist, the Patient Observation Tech position is responsible for demonstrating basic knowledge and skills necessary to communicate appropriately and provide continuous, electronic observation and surveillance of assigned age-specific, diverse patient population, assisting in the delivery of patient care and services. EDUCATION
