At Houston Methodist, the Lead Surgical Technologist position serves as a clinical resource/expert for Surgical Technology staff and creates an environment for the delivery of safe patient care and assists others in developing their skills and knowledge. This position requires proficient knowledge and skills necessary to carry out delegated tasks associated with the safe and efficient operating room support functions, anticipating the needs of the surgeon and nursing staff to support the patient during the surgical procedures. The Lead Surgical Technologist position reports observations and patient problems to the licensed nurse, ensuring other team members do the same. The Lead Surgical Technologist position is responsible for assigned non-nursing functions and practices relationship-centered care in concert with Houston Methodist values. Other duties for this position include participating in the selection, training, education, development and evaluation of the Surgical Tech team, validating competencies of Surgical Techs prior to release from orientation, general patient care and department upkeep, as delegated by licensed personnel.

QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION
- High School diploma or equivalent education (examples include: GED, verification of homeschool equivalency, partial or full completion of post-secondary education, etc.)
- Successful completion of an accredited Surgical Technologist program or military training equivalency
EXPERIENCE
- Five years of experience as a Surgical Technologist, serving as a clinical resource for three years in surgical specialty service lines
- Experience in the role of a service line team lead or preceptor
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS
Required
- CST or CSA or NCCT TS-C or meet the grandfather clause (Bill 643): The bill includes an extensive grandfather clause exempting all individuals employed to practice surgical technology in a health care facility before Sept. 1, 2009. The clarification notes that legislation does not state employed "on" Sept. 1, 2009, but rather "before that date. A surgical technologist who was employed before Sept. 1, 2009, may remain employed as a surgical technologist without meeting the certification requirement. SB1239, Sec 259.002: 30 CEUs shall be completed every two years and

- Demonstrates proficient knowledge of instruments sets, the use of the individual surgical instruments, surgical supplies and the use of the supplies

- Participates in the selection, training, education, development and evaluation of the Surgical Tech team. Develops skills of team members and continually assists with improving skills, performance and outcomes. Validates competencies of Surgical Techs prior to release from orientation. Participates in staff evaluations by providing information regarding clinical skills, knowledge base and interpersonal skills.
- Effectively supports management to implement protocols and objectives with team members to result in optimization of staff performance, teamwork, patient safety, and customer service. Initiates recommendations, collaborating with management, for improvement of employee engagement score.
SERVICE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Prepares room, equipment and supplies to accommodate planned procedures. Supports the physician with surgical procedures; anticipates the needs of the surgeon and nursing staff to support the patient during the surgical procedures. Assists with the care of instruments, equipment and supplies following surgical procedure.
- Validates potential revisions and accurately updates physician preference cards.
- Executes above average clinical and critical thinking skills in challenging procedures and patient care situations, utilizing conflict management techniques as appropriate. Drives service improvements to impact overall physician satisfaction for their department and department patient satisfaction.
QUALITY/SAFETY ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Upholds established hospital and department policies, procedures, and standards as well as scope of practice for Surgical Techs. Reports observed variances in practices to department management.
- Ensures implementation of evidence-based practices within the department. Participates in debriefing and quality improvement practices to ensure quality patient care. Partners with hospital Education to identify educational needs in partnership with unit and hospital-based education specialists.
- Contributes to identification of corrective action and improvement activities, impacting department and hospital quality and safety targets, reporting near misses, and collaborating with the interprofessional team.
FINANCE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Assists team members in maintaining inventories. Maintains efficient use of surgical supplies and minimizes opening of supplies until confirmation that will be used during surgery; does not waste supplies. Collaborates with physicians to identify cost-saving initiatives.
- Organizes time effectively and sets priorities, minimizing incidental overtime. Utilizes time between heavy workloads efficiently and helps other team members.
GROWTH/INNOVATION ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Collaborates with interprofessional health care team and initiates department process improvement. Serves on department and hospital committees, such as Shared Governance, Service Team Lead Committee, etc.
- Proactively seeks opportunities to enhance knowledge and learning towards expertise in competencies with a focus on continual development. Completes and updates the My Development Plan (MDP) on an ongoing basis.

The primary purpose of the Speech Pathology Coordinator position is to renders professional and technical speech and language therapy to assigned patients. This position is located at Memorial Hermann Northeast Hospital in Humble.
Position is responsible for providing expert perioperative patient care through the use of equipment and instrumentation. Position functions as a scrub assistant to the physician performing operative and/or invasive procedures. Must be able to maintain established alarm limit / parameter settings on all patients assigned. Performs a full range of nuclear medicine diagnostic and therapeutic imaging procedures to provide optimum information for the diagnosis and/or treatment of patients.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:
1. Graduate of a Medical Imaging Program.
2. Must possess current or temporary Nuclear Medicine license as required by state board where services will be provided:
MD: Nuclear Medicine Technologist through Maryland Board of Physicians
OH: Nuclear Medicine Technologist through Ohio Department of Health
PA: No state license required
VA: Radiological Technologist license through the Virginia Board of Medicine
WV: Nuclear MedicineTechnologistLicense OR Nuclear Medicine Apprentice License throughtheWest Virginia Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy Technology Board
NOTE: If performing CT imagingin addition to Nuclear Medicine,mustadditionally hold one of the following licenses through the West Virginia Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy Technology Board:
Radiological Technologist
Nuclear Medicine and Diagnostic CT License
Nuclear Medicine and Non-Diagnostic CT License
3. Must be registered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) or Nuclear Medicine Technology Board (NMTCB) as a Nuclear Medicine Technologist within six months of hire.
4. Certification in Basic Life Support within 30 days of hire.
5. State criminal background check and Federal (if applicable), as required for regulated areas.

1. Attends and participates in departmental meetings and activities to support progress improvement and team building.
2. Participates in planning and implementing change, maintaining and improving high quality, cost effective department operations.
3. Performs a full range of nuclear medicine diagnostic imaging and/or treatment procedures to provide optimum information for the diagnosis and ultimate treatment of patients.
4. Plans and performs imaging procedures to produce medical images for the diagnosis or treatment of patients meeting the quality standards of the department as identified through professional literature and department protocol, policy and procedure.
5. Minimizes radiation exposure to patients and staff in accordance with Radiation Safety Department policy, procedure and guidelines as well as State, Federal, The Joint Commission and other applicable regulatory bodies.
6. Reports equipment failures immediately upon identification using identified communication mechanism to ensure the performance of radiology services.
7. Assesses patients’ needs related to comfort, hygiene and range of motion and provides support accordingly.
8. Performs as a clinical and/or didactic instructor meeting the quality standards of the radiology education program(s) as identified through professional literature, department and radiology education program(s) protocol, policy and procedure.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
1. Ability to prioritize and deal with a variety of situations simultaneously.
2. Ability to interact positively with patients, families, and members of the Health Care Team.
3. Ability to improvise with altered positioning techniques, manipulation of the equipment, and accessory devices when routine positioning is compromised due to patient’s condition, age or ability.
4. Maintains an expertise in anatomy, physiology and pathology relative to imaging in order to optimize the procedure and ensure patient care/safety.
The Nuclear Medicine Clinical Ladder is a system-wide clinical advancement program to enhance professional development, provide a reward system for quality clinical performance, promote quality imaging care, and improve job satisfaction for respiratory therapists.
To apply for the next level, the Nuclear Medicine Technologist must meet the requirements of their current level. They must also meet the required years of experience, degree, and certification to apply for the next level.
Level 1
- No experience required.
- All Nuclear Medicine Technologists with less than 12 months of experience enter at Level one.
Level 2
- Meets requirements for previous level.
- One year of experience.
- Complete competency of Skill Set Tech 1, plus 1 additional skill set.
Level 3
- Meets requirements for previous levels.
- One continuing education pathway.
- Three years of experience.
- Compliant in 3 leadership/supervisory skills.
- Complete competency of Skill Set Tech 1 and 2, plus 3 additional skill sets.
Level 4
- Meets requirements for previous levels.
- One continuing education pathway.
- Five years of experience.
- Compliant in 5 leadership/supervisory skills.
- Complete competency of Skill Set Tech 1, 2, and 3 plus 5 additional skill sets.
