Schedule
(3) 12-hr shifts per week: 5:15PM- 5:15AM; rotating weekends
Education
Required – High school diploma or equivalent.
Certifications
Required – Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association.
Preferred – Certified Cardiographic Technician (CCT).
Knowledge Skills and Abilities (KSAs)
Proficiency in using computers, software, and web-based applications.
Effective verbal and written communication skills and ability to present information clearly and professionally.
Strong interpersonal skills.
Working knowledge of 12 Lead EKG tests.
Ability to recognize arrhythmias accurately.
Ability to work well under pressure, work independently, set priorities, and maintain strict confidentiality.
Ability to work flexible schedule including nights, weekends, extended shifts, etc.
Effective planning, judgment and decision making skills.
Job Duties
Prepares, instructs and educates patients on the procedure.
Performs diagnostic procedures.
Documents and maintains patient records.
Prepares work area.
Adapts behavior to the specific patient population, including but not limited to: respect for privacy, method of introduction to the patient, adapting explanation of services or procedures to be performed, requesting permissions and communication style.
Performs other related duties as required.

Medium Work - Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Even though the weight lifted may be only a negligible amount, a job should be rated Light Work: (1) when it requires walking or standing to a significant degree; or (2) when it requires sitting most of the time but entails pushing and/or pulling of arm or leg controls; and/or (3) when the job requires working at a production rate pace entailing the constant pushing and/or pulling of materials even though the weight of those materials is negligible. At Houston Methodist, the Surgical Technologist position requires novice to competent knowledge and skills necessary to carry out delegated tasks associated with the safe and efficient operating room support functions and related procedures. This position records data established by policy and procedure and reports observations and patient problems to the licensed nurse. The Surgical Technologist position, under the direction of the surgeon, assists the surgeon and/or surgical assistant during the operative procedure by carrying out tasks including but not limited to sponging, suctioning, cutting suture, and holding retractors. This position provides general patient care and department upkeep as delegated by licensed personnel. The Surgical Technologist position is responsible for assigned non-nursing functions and practices, relationship-centered care in concert with the Houston Methodist values.

SERVICE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Assists in prepping room, equipment and supplies to accommodate planned procedures. Gathers all instruments and supplies for each assigned procedure and ensures that the set-up is ready before surgeon scrubs.
- Supports the surgeon during surgical procedures, performing the surgical tech role in the provision of surgical assistance during a variety of surgical procedures including but not limited to, as appropriate: orthopedics, gynecology, general, ENT, ophthalmology, urology, spine, neurology, oral/maxillofacial, and minimally invasive procedures.
- Assists the circulating RN with sponge, instrument, needle, and other surgical counts.
- Accurately communicates updates for surgeon preference cards.
QUALITY/SAFETY ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Prepares the operating room for surgical procedures, ensuring that surgical equipment is functioning properly and safely. Assists with the care of instruments, equipment, and supplies following surgical procedure.
- Maintains the sterile field for surgical procedures by preparing sterile supplies, instruments, and equipment using sterile technique.
- Reports observed variances in practices, established hospital and department policies, procedures, and standards to department management, reporting near misses.
- Contributes towards meeting hospital and department quality and safety targets, through peer-to-peer accountability, and collaborating with the interprofessional health care team.
FINANCE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Self-motivated to independently manage time effectively and prioritize daily tasks, minimizing incidental overtime. Utilizes time between heavy workloads efficiently and helps other team members.
- Maintains efficient use of surgical supplies and minimizes opening of supplies until confirmation that will be used during surgery does not waste supplies.

Operates radiopharmaceutical, computers, and scintillation detection equipment on a technical level not requiring constant supervision. Performs Nuclear medicine examinations under the direction of the Radiologist. Functions as Supervisor of a designated area at the direction of the Systems Supervisor and Manager. Operates nuclear medicine equipment to obtain diagnostic images or measurements of the radiopharmaceuticals distribution in the specified body areas and body products.
Essential Functions
- Prepares, administers and documents diagnostic doses of radiopharmaceuticals.
- Adheres to department radiation safety practices.
- Obtains medications, radiopharmaceuticals, or contrast materials as directed for administration by a licensed practitioner, authorized/certified technologist, or registered nurse.
- Obtains brief patient history and records all pertinent information on finished exams (i.e., dose information patient data, dates, views, etc.).
- Verifies the patient by checking identification armband and prepares patient for the procedure.
- Explains the procedure to the patient and parents/family member of the patients.
- Performs organ concentration and excretion measurements to provide diagnostic information of patient illness.
- Maintains an on-going self-study program to ensure competence and knowledge in new techniques or radiopharmaceuticals.

• Assembles supplies and places into case carts for scheduled and non-scheduled procedures

Position Purpose:
Under general supervision, but according to established procedures, performs a variety of physical tests such as Electrocardiograph, Graded Exercise Stress Test and Holter Monitors/ Event Monitorsin order toassistphysicians in the determination and diagnosis of disease or dysfunction.
What the Physiology Tech Will Do:
Responsible for the performance of physiology tests; conducts progressively more complex tests as departmental experience accumulates.
Performs duties associated with tests,i.e.attaches electrodes, prepares graphs, performs calculations, monitors heart rate, etc.
Greetsandpreparespatients for tests. Interacts with patients in a courteous manner; explains treatment purpose and equipment function and otherwise alleviatespatient'sanxiety.

Minimum Qualifications:

$20.80 - $31.20Major Responsibilities:- Sets up monitoring equipment in the operating room. This includes the operating table, autotransfusion system, electrocardiograph (ECG) and temperature cables, hyper/hypothermia blanket, medication and pressure manifolds, rapid infusion warmer, recorders, defibrillators, the patient monitoring system, and transesophageal echocardiography imaging unit (TEE) machines.
- During surgical procedures, assists in the insertion of arterial pressure lines, central venous and Swan-Ganz catheter insertion, draws arterial and/or venous blood samples for diagnostic testing, checks ventilators for proper operating efficiency, operates monitor and recording systems, and identifies the various types of intubation blades and fiberoptic bronchoscopes as well as any other special equipment or supplies required for difficult intubation.
- Calibrates all pressures and recording systems within the patient monitoring system to ensure and maintain precise readings.
- Assists in transfers of patients to and from the operating room, collects all data sheets and transports them with the patient, and establishes ECG and pressure monitoring at the destination.
- Cleans all non-disposable equipment after each procedure, performs daily maintenance checks and stocks equipment.
- Moves anesthesia equipment to proper surgical suite; checks equipment to verify proper connections, gases turned off, etc.
- Maintains adequate supply of proper equipment such as: needles, syringes, air-ways, endotracheal tube (ET) tubes, scopes and blade, stethoscope, blood pressure cuff and other necessary items in anesthesia carts.
- Troubleshoots equipment malfunctions or failures and takes all necessary steps to promptly return the equipment to a safe and reliable operating condition, using backup equipment when necessary.
- Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served. Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the department's policies and procedures. This is a PRN position to cover various shifts; including nights and weekends.

- Collects and/or processes patient blood obtained by venipuncture and/or capillary puncture timely and accurate.

- Maintains equipment, keeps area clean, stocks supplies and keeps work space organized.
- Practices sterile technique and prevents cross contamination. Handles blood and body fluids and deals with infectious patients.
- Performs minor laboratory procedures accurately, precisely, and efficiently under minimal supervision including chemistry, hematology, urinalysis, and immunology.
- Perform phlebotomy through venous and capillary puncture following established procedures in accordance with age specific considerations of patients. Observes strict principles of antisepsis to prevent infection of patient and contamination of specimens.
- Receives and collects urine specimens to perform all routine tests.
- Performs specimen preparation for all procedures/tests.
- Maintains supplies inventory communicating needs to supervisor.
- Reports varying in-house test results in addition to all abnormal findings to clinical staff.

Education, Experience and Certifications
High School Diploma or GED required; Certification in phlebotomy preferred for facilities where phlebotomy is an assigned duty.

Registered Medical Lab Scientist ($35.60-$54.93 based on experience)
- Bachelor's degree in clinical laboratory/medical technology science or chemical, physical, biological, or equivalent. Education must be obtained through an accredited institution. Applicants with chemical, physical, biological science or equivalent bachelor’s degree will be subject to education verification which may include transcript/credit evaluation by Laboratory Services Quality Assurance leadership, Required.
- OR - Completion of course work and internship requirements in a qualified MLS program and eligibility to sit for the BOC. Certification must be completed and documented within 6 months of hire to remain in the registered MLS role, Required.
- Medical Technologist / Medical Lab Scientist ASCP certification or equivalent certification as approved by Manager and Human Resources. Certification must be maintained to remain in job, Required.

3. Monitor, identify changes, address alarms to identify any abnormal heart rhythm variation, and report patient’s cardiac rhythm, and/or life- threatening cardiac events to medical and nursing staff.
4. Analyze, interpret, and measure ECG strip waveform displays and document each patient’s rhythm every four hours, via Wave Strip Export, along with any changes and report these changes according to established guidelines and protocols.
5. Monitor centralized pulse oximetry for general pediatric population and adult Orthopedic patients when indicated.
6. Maintain accurate patient information within the Telemetry Surveillance Unit (TSC).
7. Support indirect patient care by assembling telemetry packs – including batteries and electrodes – for nursing staff, ensuring proper installation and battery charge, while also managing inventory, maintaining equipment cleanliness and coordinating patient equipment assignments within TSC.
8. Assure patient safety is first and foremost by identifying and prioritizing tasks by importance.
9. Demonstrate professional telephone etiquette by courteously answering calls, clearly identifying self and department and promptly relaying accurate, well documented messages to the appropriate recipient.
10. Perform video monitoring of patients who meet the video monitoring criteria and deliver/install wireless cameras.
11. Document patient’s interventions in the electronic medical record (EMR) every four hours.
12. Communicate any imminent signs of patient risk to assigned staff via the alarm system and/or wireless phone
