Under the direction of the RN circulator as dictated by the standards in the Medicare Conditions of Participation for surgical services, assists surgical teams during operative procedures in scrubbing for all physicians in assigned services. Arranges and inventories sterile set up for operations. Assists in preparing moving and positioning patients. Performs sterile scrub procedures and related activities such as preparation and draping the patient and operative area. Passes instruments, sutures, sponges and supplies in accordance with hospital policy and procedure. Participates in the turnover of operating rooms.I. Major Responsibilities:
1. Demonstrates independent functioning and proficiency in the scrub role in all cases in assigned specialty on an ongoing basis. Scrubs for all physicians in assigned service area, providing high quality evidenced-based clinical care with minimal supervision. Promotes teamwork within the team by formally precepting co-workers.
2. Prepares the Operating Room for cases. Selects and checks case cart and preference cards for correct instrument pan(s), packs, sterile supplies and additional items needed for the case.
3. Anticipates need for special equipment and supplies before procedure and requests it from the circulating nurse. Sets up back table and Mayo tray with instruments and supplies according to the procedure and surgeon preference card. Performs surgical count with circulating nurse according to UMMMC surgical count policy.
4. Responds to needs of surgeon and other team members. Assists operative team and anticipates needs of the surgeon and/or assistants during cases including the need for special equipment and supplies. Remains constantly observant of the operative field, recognizing emergency situations and performs emergency procedures as directed. Utilizes a variety of OR equipment such as microscopes, CUSA, steam sterilizers, suction, compressed air/gas, etc.
5. Passes and tracks instruments, sutures, and supplies during procedures. Labels all medication and solutions on sterile field. Monitors sponges, needles and instruments throughout the case. Cares for specimens to prevent loss or damage. Uses caution when handling specimens to ensure proper anatomical identification.
II. Position Qualifications:

Required:
1. Successful completion of an accredited school of surgical technology having obtained the required surgical technologists certification as of the date of hire.
2. All Surgical Technologist Certified employees will have obtained a surgical technologist credential administered by a nationally recognized surgical technologist certifying body accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies and recognized by the American College of Surgeons and the Association of Surgical Technologists.
3. Maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification every two years. Maintains AST membership, required educational units and AST certification.

Under the general direction of the laboratory manager or clinic manager, performs a wide array of laboratory tests and procedures of moderate complexity in a clinical laboratory or dermatology clinic.Major Responsibilities:
- Follows established protocols to perform various procedures and tests, including the most complex for an assigned area. Refers to supervisory or lead staff members for assistance in the performance and interpretation of complex or unusual tests and procedures.
- Establishes requirements/needs of a working laboratory, acquiring and maintaining par levels of dyes, stains, other solutions, and necessary equipment. Organizes and maintains the laboratory and chemical supplies in a manner consistent with chemical hygiene, blood pathogen, and other institutional requirements for proper laboratory function and safety.
- Performs all routine procedures and required quality control; ensures proper and professional accessioning of human tissue specimens, accurate and timely logging of such specimens, and preparation and presentation of same with the technical expertise required for microscopic examination by the surgeon or pathologist.
- Prepares human tissue from surgical and diagnostic sources; performs specialized fixation and microscopic examination to determine if the sections have been properly prepared and stained.
- Cleans, maintains, and calibrates all laboratory equipment involved with surgical procedures to obtain skin specimens; reads and interprets histographic displays (maps) and properly labels specimens.
- Performs routine maintenance on all instrumentation and attends continuing education sessions as required.

Preferred:
- Associates degree in a related field.

Experience/Skills:
Required:
- 1 year of experience in an anatomic pathology laboratory.
Dermatology:
Prepares histopathologic slides for tissue diagnosis utilizing frozen section techniques. Responsible for the orientation, mapping, thin sectioning, and staining of skin/tissue removed during surgical procedures. Take photos and prepares operative reports.
Performs laboratory procedures with accuracy and precision, and reports and keeps a database of test results.
Anatomic Pathology:
Prepares histopathologic slides for microscopic examination utilizing microtomy techniques. Responsible for processing, embedding, sectioning, and routine staining of paraffin blocks at the highest quality in an efficient manner. Performs special stains and immunohistochemistry procedures.

Under the general supervision of the area Section Heads and Laboratory Supervisor and according to established policies and procedures performs a variety of laboratory tests and reports data for the use in diagnosis and treatment of patients. May perform procedures across the major areas of the laboratory or concentrate in one area such as Blood Bank, Chemistry, Hematology, Immunology or Microbiology. No supervision is required for specimen processing or reporting of patient test results.Major Responsibilities:
- Performs a variety of laboratory tests and reports data for the use in diagnosis and treatment of patients.
- Performs testing accurately and completely following Policies & Procedures in the Hematology II Section. Performs coagulation testing, urinalysis, rapid strep, Sofia flu, Strep. Pneumoniae, Legionella Ag, wet prep., HCG qualitative and OCC blood testing and all other HEM II tasks.
- Ensures that test results correlate properly and takes appropriate follow-up action for all questionable results.
- Ensures the proper working order of all equipment and that there are adequate supplies and reagents for use. Restocks work bench.
- Processes specimens as outlined in Specimen Collection manual.

POSITION PURPOSE
Provides Planned Maintenance (PM), safety testing, repairs, calibration, installation, routine and emergency service to general diagnostic and therapeutic medical equipment, as assigned by the Clinical Engineering (CE) Manager.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Knows, understands, incorporates and demonstrates the mission, vision and core values of Trinity Health and the Ministry Organization in leadership behaviors, practices and decisions.
Performs PM procedures on multiple types of general and specialized clinical equipment.
Performs PM procedures using manufacturers' recommendations, standards or code requirements, as well as industry acceptable processes as guidelines.
Performs Corrective Maintenance (CM) procedures including diagnosing problems using thermodynamic, electronic/electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and/or other related sciences and documents results of activities performed to comply with all regulatory and standards requirements.
Notifies equipment users and Clinical Engineering Management of repair status and delays as necessary.
Interacts with clinical staff to understand and resolve operational problems in scheduling and completing PM procedures while minimizing interference to hospital departments.
Determines need for replacement parts and supplies, selects the most cost effective source, and submits properly completed parts request using established policies and guidelines.
Completes corrective and planned maintenance work order documentation.
Promotes teamwork by keeping others informed, participating effectively in group decision making, works to accomplish team objectives and projects, and solicits feedback about one's effectiveness as a team member.
Continually improves processes by seeking ways to eliminate and reduce waste.
Has authority (based on department guidelines) to order parts and supplies required for emergency service or repair of medical equipment. Recommends test equipment and spare equipment parts to the CE Manager or Lead Technician.
Provides on-call service coverage after normal business hours on a rotating basis, as assigned.
Performs other duties as assigned or requested by CE Manager.
Maintains a working knowledge of applicable Federal, State and local laws/regulations; the Trinity Health Integrity and Compliance Program and Code of Conduct; as well as other policies and procedures in order to ensure adherence in a manner that reflects honest, ethical and professional behavior.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Associates of Applied Sciences degree in medical electronics, electronic technology or related field, including comparable military training or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
One to two-years experience performing corrective and planned maintenance on medical equipment per policy.
Must have a basic understanding of anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology.
Working knowledge and ability to use basic hand tools and test equipment specific to the field. Ability to train CE associates on use and application of select test equipment.
Must have knowledge and understanding of OSHA, NFPA, The Joint Commission, EOC, FDA and other specific regulations and standards pertaining to clinical equipment service and repair.
Must possess a personal presence that is characterized by a sense of honesty, integrity and caring with ability to inspire and motivate others to promote the philosophy, mission, vision, goals and values of Trinity Health, Ministry Organizations, and Clinical Engineering.

Job Duties
- Supports and ensures the patient is prepared for the visit by completing appropriate documentation, including patient registration as needed, explaining procedure to patient’s understanding and patient’s questions are answered prior to leaving. After patient leaves, prepares room for next appointment.
- Supports and ensures the provider is prepared for the visit by verifying physician orders and procedures for accuracy.
- Independently operates equipment, including radiology information systems to complete imaging procedure according to protocol. This includes placement of nasogastric tubes, IVs, urinary catheters, and administration of contrast to facilitate care.
- Reviews patient images prior to transmission to ensure images meet diagnostic quality standards.
- Completes timely quality control procedures in accordance with regulatory standards and performs notification/remediation as warranted.
- Assists in the facilitation of departmental operations, including inventory, staff schedules, equipment maintenance.
- Adapts behavior to the specific patient population, including but not limited to: respect for privacy, method of introduction to the patient, adapting explanation of services or procedures to be performed, requesting permissions and communication style.

In this highly technical, fast-paced, and rewarding position, you'll collaborate with multidisciplinary team members to provide the very best care for patients. The Surgical Technician II Certified understands the procedure being performed and assures that all equipment, instrumentation, and supplies are available for the case. Anticipates the needs of the surgeon. Handles the instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary during the surgical procedure. Participates in setting up and turning over the operating room for cases.
Your Job Requirements:

• Graduate of certified Surgical Technologist program, military trained, or AD in Surgical Technology preferred
• Basic Life Support certified

Your Job Responsibilities:
• Anticipate needs of the surgical team and obtains instrumentation and supplies and available for procedure.
• Pass instruments to surgeon and assistant during procedure.
• Assists with terminal cleaning of room and preparation for the following case.
• Begins cleaning up back table and preparing instruments for terminal cleaning and sterilization as circulator prepares patient to leave the room.
• Place instruments back in the tray for transport to SPD.
• Responsible for knowing and adhering to all policy and procedures such as count policy, universal protocol and labeling of medications, etc.
• Works with students and inexperienced staff on correct method for passing and retrieving instruments during surgical procedures.

As a generalist with our second shift medical laboratory team, you’ll work in multiple areas and refine your skills through time spent in blood bank, toxicology, urinalysis, chemistry, hematology, and more! As a member of the laboratory team at Geisinger Medical Center (GMC), you’ll support a 500+ bed Level I trauma and comprehensive stroke center AND perform testing for the entire eight-hospital system. This role will do automated, semi-automated, and manual testing in a fast-paced, collaborative team environment.
With the volume of specimens processed at GMC, you’ll test abnormal specimens daily in addition to completing life-saving routine testing like hemoglobin A1C, lipids, kidney function, drug screens, and volatiles. You’ll also work with state-of-the-art automated testing equipment and support quality control measures, troubleshoot instrumentation, and verify results on front-end processing equipment. This position will also have the opportunity to learn flow cytometry.
Education Qualification and Details
Medical Technologist/Medical Laboratory Scientist:
- Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college/university AND successful completion of an ASCP/NAACLS-accredited Medical Technology program OR;
- Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college/university with a major in biological, chemical, physical or clinical laboratory science AND ASCP categorical certification OR;
