Under the direction of the Sterile Processing Leadership Team, an SPD Tech I will perform decontamination, inspection/assembly, high level disinfection(HLD)/sterilization, storage and distribution of instruments, devices and medical equipment throughout the UMass Network, along with other associated tasks, utilizing infection control and safety practices during all phases of the process while maintaining a clean, safe and organized workspace.I. a. Collects, receives and records soiled instruments/equipment/devices for decontamination process and associated tasks as outlined by established policy/process, guided by industry regulations/recommendations and manufacturer’s instructions for use (IFU).
b. Utilizes equipment, tools, solutions and personal protective equipment in a prescribed manner while following universal safety precautions.
c. Maintains clean, safe and organized workspace and other associated tasks.
2. Inspection/Assembly
a. Inspects for cleanliness and proper functioning, assembles, packages and records instruments/devices and equipment following the established procedure for each.

3. Sterilization/High Level Disinfection (HLD)
a. Records and routes instruments/equipment/devices for proper sterilization or HLD as identified and outlined by manufacturer’s IFU and performs identified process/cycle with appropriate equipment.

This position is responsible for providing services of both a technical and non-technical nature in the laboratory service areas. Works with considerable independence to perform routine and complex laboratory tests in all assigned departments of the clinical laboratory to provide physicians with rapid and accurate laboratory test results. May perform procedures across the major areas of the laboratory or concentrate in one area such as Blood Bank, Chemistry, Hematology, Immunology or Microbiology.I. Major Responsibilities:
1. Follows established procedures to perform all lab tests (including all levels of complexity as defined by CLIA) to obtain data for use in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. Provides guidance and consultation to Medical Laboratory Technicians in the interpretation of complex testing or unusual findings.
2. Assesses acceptability of specimens for analysis and maintains integrity of the specimens throughout the entire testing process.
3. Performs set up on all laboratory equipment, instruments and apparatus required for specific laboratory testing. Performs routine cleaning and preventative maintenance to ensure continued functioning of equipment. Documents all maintenance procedures performed in a timely and accurate manner.
4. Operates all laboratory equipment per standard operating procedures to ensure accurate patient test results.
5. Performs moderately complex troubleshooting, repair, and modification of a wide range of complex instrumentation in assigned laboratory areas.
6. Performs calibration procedures on instrumentation per departmental procedures in an accurate and timely manner.
7. Adheres to the established quality control policies and procedures in order to guarantee the reliability of data.
8. Informs the appropriate supervisor or designee of unusual or unexpected test results after verification and accessing validity of the original test results.
9. Recognizes critical and /or life-threatening results and notifies the appropriate clinical personnel per hospital policy.
10. Resolves and documents procedural problems encountered in the daily workload; notifies the supervisor of unusual or recurring problems.
11. Maintains all records and documentation needed to comply with TJC, CAP, AABB, Medicare, Medicaid, and hospital laboratory regulations.
12. Orients and instructs new employees and students in clinical laboratory operations and procedures.
13. May perform duties of charge technologist in the absence of the supervisor. May assist supervisor in preparation for Department and Laboratory wide inspections.
14. Obtains and processes specimens from patients as required using established techniques.
15. Assists in the development of new medical laboratory procedures and techniques.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Overview
The Freed-Pastor laboratory at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute is seeking an exceptionally motivated and experienced PhD-level scientist (Scientist II) to join Cancer Grand Challenges - Team ILLUMINE to investigate the Cancer Dark Proteome and drive the development of innovative cellular therapies for pancreatic cancer. Is fully proficient in the use of all equipment and procedures for an assigned area. Work schedule includes rotating shifts, holidays and/or on-call.Major Responsibilities:
- Follows established Blood Bank protocols perform tests including the most complex for an assigned area and prepares component blood products for transfusion. Provides guidance and consultation to lower level technologists, technicians and others in the interpretation of complex or unusual test results and in the performance of standard operating Blood Bank procedures.
- Interprets and correlates clinical test results with patient history, diagnosis, and clinical condition in order to explain test results (normal/abnormal) so that appropriate action can be taken and/or blood component can be transfused.
- Performs low, moderate and/or high complexity testing as required.
- Performs all testing and work assignments with a positive sense of urgency meeting all established turnaround times and deadlines.
- Troubleshoots testing process discrepancies.
- Logs and receives donor and patient specimens. Sort and triage requisitions and specimens to appropriate work area in a timely manner. Processes specimens for patients including but not limited to centrifugation, aliquotting and labeling.
- Processes blood donor specimens for outside shipment and testing. Sends specimens and blood products between campuses and various sites using appropriate packaging and transport methods.
- Answers telephones and communicates pertinent information. Sends specimens, blood products and carriers to various sites using the pneumatic tube.
- Assists in the validation and implementation of new equipment, equipment modifications and/or test systems.
- Ensures that test results meet requirements of the laboratory quality control program.
- Performs assigned duties to ensure an adequate inventory of supplies for the assigned area. Monitors inventory levels and stores equipment and supplies in a neat and orderly manner. Utilizes first-in/first-out (FIFO) inventory management practices.
- Maintains equipment during the shift including necessary calibration and cleaning to assure accurate results and performance. Performs moderately complex troubleshooting, repair, and modification of a wide range of complex equipment and instrumentation. Notifies supervisory personnel of any equipment failures.
- Instructs technicians and technologists in the set-up and operation of new equipment and procedures.
- Ensures compliance with all laboratory quality and safety policies.
- Instructs students and new employees in clinical laboratory operations and procedures.
- Maintains concurrent, complete and accurate records of processes performed using manual and computer-based systems. Follow records management procedures. Archive records as directed.

- A baccalaureate degree from a United States (US) regionally accredited college/university including courses in biological science, chemistry and mathematics, AND successful completion of a United States NAACLS accredited Medical Laboratory Scientist program with ASCP certification as an MT(ASCP) or MLS(ASCP).

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Performs pre-analytical specimen processing: Receives patient specimens from within the institute and outside institutions.
- Becomes familiar with patient and specimen requirements; stores and transports specimens according to procedures; ensure specimen integrity is preserved at all times.
- Unloads and loads the pneumatic tube system and accurately distributes specimens; does routine and stat specimen delivery runs to BWH laboratories; does specimen pickup runs from clinic locations at DFCI
- Receives specimens into the Laboratory Information System (LIS) by scanning barcodes or manual entry
- Verifies upon receipt that all samples are labeled according to policy and addresses variances according to policies.
- Documents in the LIS any specimen or test cancellations per policy; contacts the appropriate provider or reference laboratories with questions regarding discrepancies with test orders or specimen containers.
- Processes add on tests according to policy
- Processes tests sent out to reference laboratories; communicates with reference labs as needed
- Processes specimens by loading the pre-analytic automation system or via centrifugation, aliquoting, storing, and shipping per test requirements.
- Performs various quality checks to ensure all requests are accurate before dispensing the specimens to the appropriate performing lab.
- Responds to telephone inquiries to assist providers, nurses and other caregivers with lab test, test requirement and result inquiries.
- Performs all duties with accuracy and efficiency to ensure patient care is not compromised.
- Utilizes electronic system for faxed tests results from reference laboratories.
- Reviews pending lists as required; addresses and corrects discrepancies or pending test results by contacting the reference lab and the provider as necessary.
- Processes bone marrows orders and specimens.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Develops knowledge to accurately and efficiently ensure all test requests are in the LIS.
- Understands lab safety policy and procedures and Department of Transportation specimen shipping regulations.
